Dear Castle Rock Chamber Members,
I am truly excited to be the 2014/2015 Chairman of the Board for the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce. It is an honor and pleasure to work with Pam Ridler, the President and CEO. She is one of the most dedicated and diligent leaders in our community. Being a member of the chamber, working on committees and serving on the board of direc-tors exemplifies my commitment to our community and my core values. I am humbled to serve such a wonderful com-munity as Castle Rock.
“Igniting the passion for business success and community prosperity” is the vision of the chamber. When I think of
what this means I am inspired and motivated to go far beyond what others might expect and to achieve more than I’d ever believe I could do.
This vision is focused at every business in our community, new and existing alike. At some point, every business needs a little spark of encouragement, support and hope to keep forging on towards their individual dreams. That’s what lights my fire for business and for our community. My hope is that that the chamber will inspire you to accomplish all your dreams as well.
I love Castle Rock for its local charm, its beautiful views and its people. From Plum Creek and downtown, to The Meadows and Founders areas I can find some-thing special and genuinely Castle Rockian. I appreciate the diversity of our com-munity from the very rural ranches to our historic downtown and to our upscale suburban areas. We are bursting with hard working families and professionals who love our local charm, slower pace and family safe community. Castle Rock is down to earth and possesses an intoxicating charm.
Finally, as the Chairman of the Board, my goal is to help the chamber and our community partners to embrace and advance our vision for every business and every resident of our community. This is a big goal and everyone is responsible for carrying out the mission and values to that very end. I hope you will join the chamber in its vision.
Sincerely,
Mike Tafoya

HAVE A LOT OF COMPETETORS?
For the last seventeen years, I have worked as a Real Estate Assistant in the
community alongside my husband, Tom Cal-houn, who is a realtor with RE/MAX
Alliance. I joined the Chamber in June of 2011 and became an Ambassador in
February of 2012. Joining the Chamber has proven to be the best way to get involved
in the community. By becoming a member of the Chamber, I have greatly broadened
my friendships and business connections. I have met so many wonderful people who
live and work in this beautiful town and I am honored to serve the residents. The Castle
Rock Chamber has so many dedicated Ambassadors, that being awarded Am-bassador of the Month is amazing. I am blessed to have this recognition and thank you to the Chamber for this opportunity!
When I’m not assisting Tom with Real Estate or participating as an Ambassa-dor, time with family and friends is a priority. When the opportunity arises, I enjoy dancing, playing piano, walking our 3 chihuahuas, hiking and traveling.
Thank you Melanie, for all you do to support and promote the Castle Rock Chamber.
We greatly appreciate and applaud your outstanding efforts!

Business of the Month- Arapahoe/Douglas Works! (AD Works!)
The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce honors Arapahoe/Douglas Works! (AD Works!) as our May Business of the Month recipient. Arapahoe/Douglas Works! (AD Works!) have been members of the Chamber for more than twenty four years.

AD Works! oper-ates a variety of grant initiatives addressing community need that require extensive cooperation with sister workforce centers, eco-nomic developers, employers, educators and other community partners.
AD Works! serves the general population and serves a variety of special populations through statute, contract or grant funding. Special populations include dislocated workers, displaced homemakers, veterans, welfare and SNAP recipients, veterans, persons with disabilities, older workers, non-custodial parents who owe child care, ex-offenders, ESL students, dropouts, and youth. In addition, it works with employers to find or develop qualified candidates.

Local high school students from the Castle Rock Young Entrepreneurs Academy Class of 2014 revealed their new start-up businesses to the public, at the YEA! Trade Show on Saturday, May 17, at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital in Castle Rock. The presentation was a culmination of eight months of hard work, resulting in the graduates owning and operating their own real businesses.
Businesses included a non-profit providing educational supplies to impoverished children in Belize to a mobile retail fashion service, a patent-pending manufacture per-sonal hygiene product and video production company.
During the course YEA!, students are taught by local en-trepreneurs and are introduced to guest lecturers, suc-cessful community leaders and business mentors. They brainstorm ideas, write a business plan, pitch their busi-ness before real investors for real funding and then launch their own company or social movement!

Developing Leaders-Leadership Douglas County May’s Class Topic: Fire and Emergency Services Speakers: Chief Dan Qualman, South Metro Fire Rescue Authority Chief Art Morales, Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department Class Planners: Pete Ritchie, Wind Crest Retirement Village and Matt Goudy, Class of 2012
The purpose of Fire and Emergence Services Day is to intro-duce LDC class members to a component that is vital to all communities. It’s a day for the class to learn what it takes to protect our community, as well as a chance for some hands-on fun! The sessions normally take place in several different venues and participants are introduced to various pieces of equipment and they even get to try out some of the equipment. This year was no different, although class planners had to deal with a May 1 snowstorm that kept all of the activities indoors at South Metro Fire Station #34 in Lone Tree and Station 151 in Castle Rock.
Fire services are very diverse in Douglas County and while the departments are not all run on the same model, there is a tremendous amount of collaboration. The departments operate in areas that are rural, such as Larkspur, to more dense populations, such as Castle Rock, to a mixture of ru-ral, urban and higher density where the South Metro Fire Rescue Agency operates. Along with fire and emergency services, we also have an Office of Emergency Manage-ment and Terrorism Liaison Officers here in Douglas County.
The agencies work independently, but also collaborate on things such as fighting structural fires; planning for, miti-gating and fighting wildfires; answering emergency medi-cal calls and gathering information on terrorism. Regional partnerships, and sharing manpower and equipment be-tween agencies, are ways the county leverages and stretches existing resources.
Some of the challenges include making sure that home-owners are aware of the need to mitigate their properties for wildfires, and balancing between being prepared for the big calls as well as the day to day calls. Emergency runs for medical related issues make up a large percentage of the calls.
Class members got an in-depth look at fire engines, brush trucks and EMS equipment. They learned how to rappel, try on bunker gear and simulated putting out a kitchen fire with a home fire extinguisher (it’s not so easy!). Some members even volunteered to experience backboarding, a long spine board device used to immobilize an individual who may have suffered a spinal injury. Chief Art Morales presented one the day’s highlights—an inspiring leadership skill session on knowing your mission, vision and values.
“This program gave me a whole new appreciation for the
Castle Rock Fire Department and the first class care and cus-
tomer service provided.” Marcus Cordova, LDC Participant
The next Leadership Class is “Art, Culture and Media” on June 5, along with Graduation for the Class of 2013. Lead-ership Douglas County is also currently accepting applica-tions for the 2013-14 class, with an application deadline of June 15th, 2013. For more information on Leadership Doug-las County, or for an application, please visit; http://www.CastleRock.org/Leadership.htm or call Carrie Buchan at 720.440.3726 or email [email protected].

Look around you - Castle Rock is amazing. Our residents have been learning and working toward a com-mon goal of conserving water for years, and it works. The result? Our community is the beneficiary.
If you're wondering how you can join this effort and become Water Wise, attend one of our workshops. Through hands-on demonstrations and dis-plays, you'll see how easy it is to con-serve water and still have a beautiful yard. You will also learn how to apply water by taking advantage of the "7 Steps of Xeriscape;" how to detect water waste; and how to improve your irrigation system. After the workshop, you will earn a "Water Wiser" designa-tion and be exempt from the every-third-day watering schedule.
Registration is open for 2014 work-shop s a t http : / /c r g ov .com /FormCenter/Water-2/Water-Wiser-W o r k s h o p - 6 7 . Reservations are required.

The facility is part of an effort by Castle Rock to have 75 percent of its water come from renewable sources by 2050, when the town pro-jects it will be built out at 100,000 peo-ple. The town's population is at about 53,000 now. Read more: http://w w w . c a s t l e r o c k . o r g /chamber_news3.htm
