Improv comedy club targets morale

Currently, Cerklje Air Base only supports takeoffs and landings under visual flight rules conditions. In other words, pilots are only able to operate an aircraft in weath-er conditions that are clear enough to allow them to see where the aircraft is going. Assisting the Slovenian air force in creating the Civilian Aviation Authority approved procedures for publication will greatly expand the oper-ational availability of the

base’s runway. “To say it honestly, I have

been waiting for this sup-port visit from the USAFE-AFAFRICA expert team like children wait for Christmas Day,” said Slovenian air force Capt. Gregory Virant, 15th Wing chief of air operations. “Building the instrument pro-cedures and the ability to use them by the end of this year will be a real milestone for our air base. We will final-ly be able to fly in and out of Cerklje Air Base in any weather, and, therefore, we

will be able to support NATO aircraft whether being their divert airfield, fuel stop or deployment air base.”

During the visit, the team of U.S. Air Force advisers received many informative briefings on current improve-ments being made at the base, future projects and airspace problems with which they were there to assist. Over the five days, they undertook those problems by providing viable procedures for land-ings and takeoffs for aircraft under instrument flight rules.

Additionally, the team offered the Slovenians their perspec-tives on avenues for improve-ment and NATO interopera-bility, such as force protection measures and airfield man-agement.

“This event was an out-standing opportunity to fos-ter relationships with our Slovenian counterparts,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Luis A. Martinez, USAFE-AFAFRICA opera-tions superintendent for com-mand and control. “We were able to assist them in improv-

ing their air base’s capabili-ties to handle various fixed and rotary wing aircraft for host nation, U.S. and NATO use.”

The culmination of the five-day mission was a combined briefing with the Cerklje Air Base commander on the team’s findings and recommendation. Their find-ings can potentially pave the way for much greater U.S. and NATO interoperability at Cerklje and future use of the base for exercises and contin-gency response missions.

Motivating our teammatesby Chief Master Sgt. Jacob DunbarAir Force Special Operations Command

Many of us have set goals and intend to reach them. We get pumped up by the thought of achieving them. Though we got

off to a valiant start blazing full speed toward the finish line, there are times when the fire in us fades. Sometimes our circumstances dictate that we give up or give in, and we see our dreams slipping away. When we lose the drive and our goals seem impossible, these are moments when we could use a little motivation to move along or get back on track. Often this support and encour-agement comes from the people closest to us — our teammates. These are our friends, family and co-workers.

Teammates help each other along. They are the support arm, providing the extra push, the burst of energy, the additional determination we need to get over the hump, cross the finish line and achieve the goal. How do teammates provide this motivation? They do it in many ways, but the ones that stand out to me are being under-standing, honest, selfless and committed.

Being understanding is about making the effort to know someone and their circumstances. This is a crucial element in building an effec-

tive team. It is important to know each other’s weaknesses and strengths, moods and attitudes, likes and dislikes. Teammates complement one another; when one becomes weak, the other gets stronger, making up for the shortfall. Being attuned to our teammate’s behaviors helps us to recognize when something is out of the ordinary, when they need assistance and when we should intervene. Sometimes, helping the other person is telling them the truth.

Honesty between individuals improves com-munication and establishes a level of trust that is vital to pulling off joint goals. We must be able to tell our teammates when they are wrong, when they are not carrying their weight and when they need help. Sometimes, we do not always see our own faults or notice our inadequacies, however, the people around us who are observing can see the situation more clearly from an objective viewpoint and alert us to it. This gives us the opportunity to get better and refocus our efforts on the things that really matter.

Team in itself signifies us, we and all; there is no I, me or self. It is about being selfless and being more concerned about the success of the team than ourselves. It is about looking out for the other guy, being a good wingman, friend, co-worker, family member. The idea is to be each other’s keeper and not stand by allowing

our teammates to fail when we can prevent it. It is being there for someone when they need us, understanding their concerns and support-ing them in the most difficult and challenging moments. Here we take responsibility for each other’s successes and failures; we are a contribu-tor whichever way it turns out.

Even within the most cohesive teams, indi-viduals have differences; those varied perspec-tives can drive a wedge between members and hinder the team’s success. However, when we are committed to others, we have to put aside those differences and come together as one. The key is that we are focusing on and pursuing the same goals. When the path is decided, we stick to it regardless of difficulties, distractions and per-sonal desires. The success in “team” is not how much as individuals we can accomplish but how much more together we can achieve.

The motivation in all of this is letting our teammates realize that they are not alone in the pursuit; we will be behind them pushing them along, beside them cheering them on and in front of them pulling them forward. The notion is that they do not have to stop when they get tired, and they do not have to quit when things get tough. Even though, at times, they feel they will have to do it alone, they don’t. They can depend on us to get them to the goal.

cast we have here in the military community.”The improv club comprises members of the KMC, and the

cast changes with the flexibility expected of an improv per-formance.

For some members of the audience, the show also shined a new light on improvisation as an art form.

“It definitely changed my perception of improv as a medi-ocre-sometimes-funny stage act to seeing it as a legitimate art form,” said Cameron Andersen, Community Bank teller. “The back-and-forth between those on stage showed a flow between them one would expect to see at a jazz concert.”

That is what Strike Force Comedy is, an improv club any-one with base access can join.

“Before every show, we have an Improv Workshop starting at 3 p.m.,” Ruland said. “The people who come to the work-shop are invited to be in the show that evening.”

The Ramstein Community Center tries to host a Strike Force Comedy show at least once a quarter. The next show is scheduled for May 16.

Above is an example of unacceptable disposal of bulk trash. Keep the bin platforms free and clear of any boxes, large items and excess garbage bags. Having items on the platforms prevents the contractor from being able to access the bins to empty them.

Recycling: It’s the lawby Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Contrary to what some may believe, on-base recycling is not an option; recycling in Germany is the law.

Service contract representatives from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron want KMC members to be aware of the policies and rules on recycling while living in base housing.

“The recycling policies are the same on base as they are off base — paper, plastics, glass and regular refuse,” said Luise Westrich, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron service contracts rep-resentative. “We need to be in compliance with the regulation, which is mandatory separation of materials.”

The U.S. government spends €9 million every year on recycling and trash-removal contracts. It is important for residents to ensure their properly separated trash gets into the cor-rect bin. The platforms surrounding the bins must remain clear.

“Disposal of bags on the platforms is not allowed; the (refuse collection) driver is not required to pick up the extra bags,” Westrich said. “The platform needs to be clean and clear to ensure the driver can lift the bins.”

If parents have little helpers around the home pitching in, it is important they know the rules as well.

“A lot of parents send their kids to go throw the trash in the bins, but sometimes the kids just want to hurry and go play and will dump the bag into whichever bin, not necessarily the proper one,” said Staff Sgt. Mario Amadiz, 786th CES service contracts representative. “Sometimes it doesn’t even make it in a bin; they just leave it on the side. If you’re going to have your children do that (job), (it’s important to watch) and ensure they are doing it properly.”

Residents must pick up the recycling bags from the U-Fix-It store located on Ramstein in Bldg. 859. They are mandatory and free of charge. The bags are there to provide custom-ers the means they need to correctly recycle.

When items are not properly separated, the contractor takes the refuse to the landfill and they often get turned away due to having re-cyclable items.

“Residents need to sort properly; that is the biggest problem we have,” Westrich said. “The trash contractor is getting sent away from the landfill due to the trash not being sorted prop-erly. They have to take the trash to their area and sort it out. The (German) government is looking into changing the contract to allow the company to charge extra money for having to sort through the trash.”

Residents are encouraged to start the sorting process inside the home. Having separate labeled bins for the different bags will allow families to get into the routine of proper recycling.

Aside from regular weekly recycling and garbage removal, bulk trash removal, such as furniture and other large items, can be placed out near the bin platforms, not directly on them.

“Make sure you put your bulk items out the day or night before the bulk pick-up,” said Martina Divivier, 786th CES service contracts representative.

The time frame for bulk trash pickup is as follows: every Monday from May 1 through Sept. 30, and the last Monday of every month from Oct. 1 through April 30.

Another long-standing issue is the amount of illegal dumping from off-base residents that drop their garbage off into the on-base recy-cling facilities. This is prohibited.

The government pays each military mem-ber a utility allowance that covers the cost of recycling and trash removal in their villages. If an off-base resident dumps their garbage on base, the government is essentially paying for garbage removal twice.

On-base residents are allowed to use the recycling centers located at Bldg. 5146 on Ramstein and Bldg. 2821 on Vogelweh. Off-base residents are allowed to utilize the recy-cling centers in their respective villages.

For questions about recycling, call the hous-ing office at 489-6671/6672.

Learn to navigate an overseas marriageby the 86th Airlift Wing Office of the Staff Judge Advocate

Getting married is probably one of the most important life decisions one can make. The mere thought of marriage can conjure both excitement and stress for the prospective couple, and getting married overseas can feel like an equally daunt-ing task. However, when equipped with the right information, an overseas marriage can be easier to navigate than expected.

Military members frequently seek information on marriage laws. Within the United States, state law determines who may marry, when and under what circumstances. Much like in the U.S., marriage overseas is a function of civil authority and is, there-fore, also dictated by the respective nation’s laws.

In general, members may choose to wed any-where in the world provided they meet the require-ments of that nation’s jurisdiction. In most cases, this involves a certain waiting period to establish residency. In Denmark, for example, the waiting period is only a few days, while other countries may be significantly longer.

Regardless of the location, one should expect to furnish documentation that may take weeks to pro-cess. Thus, one must exercise due diligence when choosing the marriage locale, because administra-tive requirements must be satisfied prior to a reli-gious or other type of ceremony, if so desired.

Assuming one complies with the applicable laws of where the marriage takes place, the U.S. will

usually recognize the marriage. Notwithstanding, one should verify the marriage’s acceptance through their legal state of residency attorney general’s office.

The following points offer additional information on the subject:

WHO MAY PERFORM THE MARRIAGE?American diplomatic and consular officers are

not permitted to perform marriages (Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations 52.1). As a rule, mar-riages cannot be performed on the premises of an American embassy or consulate. A local (foreign) civil or religious official will usually perform mar-riages abroad.

FOREIGN LAWS, PROCEDURESThe embassy or tourist information bureau of

the country in which the marriage will take place can provide the most accurate information about marriage laws and procedures. Additionally, the Department of State’s Overseas Citizens Services can provide general information on marriage in a limited number of countries. Lastly, American embassies and consulates abroad frequently have information about marriage in their respective coun-tries.

DOCUMENTATION, AUTHENTICATIONMost countries require a member present a valid

U.S. passport. In addition, most countries also require birth certificates and divorce decrees. Some

countries also require the consular official of the U.S. to authenticate the documents presented. This process can be time-consuming and expensive.

AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY TO MARRYSome countries require proof of legal capacity to

enter into a marriage contract. This is usually in the form of a certification by competent authority that no impediment exists to the marriage. If this is not possible, the prospective couple will need to exe-cute an affidavit that certifies that no such impedi-ment exists. This affidavit may be executed for a fee at the American embassy or consulate in the country where the marriage will take place.

The marriage package that the passport office provides also includes affidavits. This type of affi-davit has been accepted by local (foreign) civil and religious officials. Make sure this document is properly filled out, and stop by your local base legal office for a notarization, which is free (legal assis-tance eligibility is subject to status).

MARRIAGE TO A FOREIGN NATIONALInformation on obtaining a visa for a foreign

spouse may be obtained from any office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. embas-sies and consulates abroad, or the Department of State’s Visa Office. General information regarding visas may be obtained by calling the visa office at 202-663-1225.

by Tech. Sgt. Natalie StanleySecretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information

WASHINGTON — Senior leadership addressed the key issues, priorities, initia-tives and challenges facing the Air Force during the State of the Air Force press brief-ing Jan. 15 at the Pentagon.

Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III focused on the Air Force’s highest priorities and said they have been working hard to balance resources and preserve combat capability in a tough fiscal environment.

“Everyone wants more Air Force,” James said. “We’re meeting those demands with the smallest force in our history. Couple a smaller force against the backdrop of aus-tere budgets, and you have a total force that is under significant strain: active duty, Guard, Reserve, civil-ian, and their families.”

Welsh had the same concern.“It’s about some very tough decisions we have

to make to recapitalize on the Air Force for the threat 10 years from now,” he said. “We don’t have enough money last year or this coming year to fund all the things that we currently have in our force structure.”

While fiscal year 2015 still presents some enor-mous budget challenges for the Air Force, James and Welsh strongly agree enough is enough when it comes to force shaping and stated Airmen will see no involuntary boards in 2015.

“We cannot go any lower,” Welsh said. “We are getting too small to succeed as opposed to too big to fail.”

James said challenges with the budget in no way minimalize the responsibilities of the Air Force.

“As Air Force demands around the world continue to increase, we cannot afford to get smaller and sacrifice capability,” she said.

One of greatest demands James and Welsh addressed was intelligence, surveil-lance, and reconnaissance requirements.

“Not only do combatant commanders want more ISR, they want the globally inte-grated, persistent ISR that Air Force capa-bilities provide,” the secretary said.

James and Welsh acknowledged the sig-nificant stress the high operations tempo has placed on its experienced operators. To combat that, they have developed a plan to meet combatant commander warfighting requirements while relieving some of the unrelenting strain felt by operators.

The intentions of the ISR goals outlined by James and Welsh will provide near-term relief to stressed crews by implementing a number

of options to immediately increase manning. The future of the Air Force continues its focus on

balancing today’s readiness with tomorrow’s mod-ernization.

“The American people expect our Air Force to fly, fight and win against any adversary,” James said. “It is important that we continue to afford our nation the Air Force capability it needs well into the future by appropriately investing in our people and in our platforms.”

Airmen from the 37th Airlift Squadron participated in Volfa 15-1, an annual, multilateral training event led by the French air force Jan. 21 at Orleans-Bricy Air Base, France.

The exercise increases the interoper-ability of airlift squadrons within NATO and tests entry forces’ actions in high-level electronic warfare. The exercise is one of the ways Airmen can stay ready, develop partnerships and hone their ability to respond anywhere at any time.

“The exercise is kind of like a test laboratory for our operations,” said Maj. David Lanan, Personnel Exchange Program exchange officer. “If we had to work together against a common enemy, how would that be done and would we be able to do it, or are there changes that multiple sides have to make to our operations to ensure we fit well as one cohesive force in the future?”

Lanan hoped that this exercise could help answer those questions. The French 261st Tactical Airlift Squadron hosted the 37th AS at Bricy. There, U.S.

Airmen met Lanan, who is on loan and part of the 261st TAS and helped coordinate the events.

“The French are one of our closest allies, so keeping that partnership alive and capable of reacting to future threats feels very important, and I happen to have the ability to do that on a daily basis,” Lanan said.

Lanan helped coordinate a tour of the U.S. C-130J

Super Hercules for French airmen as well as a mission featuring a low-level simulated drop. Ramstein Airmen also had a chance to learn and speak with the French squadron leadership.

“Volfa is important, because we learn to interoperate with other coun-tries and other aircraft,” said French air force Maj. Nicolas Geranton, 261st Tactical Airlift Squadron formal train-ing and evaluations chief. “It’s not often that we get to train together. By training together, we will be ready to do the mission together.”

The 37th AS visit to Bricy is just one part of Volfa 15-1 and is one of the ways U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa continue their dedi-cation to supporting NATO operations.

“Reassurance is not only the force but the speed,” said Gen. Frank Gorenc, USAFE-AFAFRICA commander. “That’s

why ‘Forward, Ready, Now!’ is such an important con-cept ... we are the immediate response people.”

While the flight was a daytime low-level simulated drop, other Airmen will be conducting more day and night flights while performing simulated air drops and personnel recovery training with NATO allies as Volfa 15-1 continues during the next few weeks.

Marriage in GermanyIn Germany, only a marriage performed at a registrar’s

office (Standesamt) is considered legally valid. The 786th Force Support Squadron Passport Office offers a “Marriage in Germany” information package, which lists the mandatory requirements and documents that members will need to provide to the Standesamt.

The following are a few of the required documents:• Birth certificates with certified translation if the certificates

are not in German. • Proof of citizenship. Passport or, in case of service mem-

bers, a statement of citizenship. Military ID-card is not accept-able. • Authorization to marry from a commanding officer (see

AFI 36-2609).• Certificate of Registration (Anmeldenachweis) will be

required if the intended spouse is not German or a command sponsored U.S. national. This is a written statement from the local resident registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) that the foreigner is properly registered.

There may be slight variations in the processing at the indi-vidual Standesämter in Germany. As a first step, American citizens are urged to consult the registrar at the Standesamt in the city or town where they wish to get married. They should keep in mind that they will need to translate all documents they wish to submit from English (or any other language) to German. Depending on the number of documents a member needs to translate, this process may require time and money.

Word ScrambleUnscramble these American military operations

“It’s a nice and sunny day. There are treats and cheese waiting for me. There is nothing that can stop me.” I told this line to myself again and again trying to calm myself down over the “roud” roar of the C-130J Super Hercules engines.

In reality, it would be hours before the sun came up. The only thing waiting for me was a doggie barf bag and a loadmaster looking at me like I was going to “mark my territory.” I mean, I may have had the thought cross my mind, but these guys work hard; I didn’t need to make it harder.

Once I finally got my footing and my ears got adjusted, it was a very smooth flight several thousand feet in the air. The hum and slight rocks put me to sleep. My pilots were flying to France to participate in a French-led exercise. They were doing the mission and making things happen.

Yet, my dear fans, I wish I could tell you that everything was smooth and that I lived up to my legend — no, no, no, nope.

We met up with French C-130s and got ready to participate in low-level flying. I should have known by the grins around me that this was going to be a trip. We lifted off and flew like I had gotten used to. I said goodbye to the ground and was getting ready to

sleep, and all of a sudden I felt a jerk. I looked out the window and I saw the ground getting closer. I looked at the loadmaster. He smiled at my terri-fied face as he yelled out, “tactical maneuvers.” The sweet hum and rock of the plane became a roar, and the true mean-ing of turbulence hit me. I looked at the window

and saw a French castle getting closer. I couldn’t take it; my poor body couldn’t take it, and I dropped a few 2nd Lt. Spankys. Thankfully they had the facil-ities on the plane.

Once they reached a few hundred feet from the ground they leveled out. Yet it was nothing like several thousand; it was rocky. It gave me the same feeling I got when I ate that green cheese with some leaves growing on it (not a good idea).

I pushed through it because it was for the mission; the Airmen on board were training and building relationships with their allies. Thankfully, we completed the mission and flew back to Ramstein before I had to use the doggie bags again.

During this trip, I saw so many Airmen working together like a seam-less machine. Each Airman knew where to go and what to do. I saw just the tip of the number of Airman it takes to get just one C-130 in the air. It makes me sit in wonder as I look over the flightline.

The 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron executes U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s largest law enforcement mission covering 1,100 square miles, providing police services to more than

57,000 Department of Defense per-sonnel.

Weekly, several members of the squadron head to downtown Kaiserslautern to build relations, keep the peace and patrol the streets at night during high-risk time periods. These Airmen join the Kaiserslautern “Ordnungsamt,” or office of public order, and German Polizei on walk-

ing patrols, roaming the entertainment district from Wednesday to Saturday nights.

“(The patrols are here to) show, because of the presence of so many Americans, that the U.S. military is taking responsibility and supports the local government with their law enforcement duties,” said Zivil Polizei-5 Gerhard Wessollek, 569th

USFPS team leader.The joint walking

patrols in the down-town area started as a partnership and have now developed into a friendship built through joint training and exercises. That friendship developed from shared experi-ences such as helping lost tourists, taking drugs off the street or breaking up fights.

“It shows (our German neighbors) that we are here to

not only help Americans and pro-tect them, but working together with our host nation partners to make the community safer for all residents, Americans and local nationals,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Friend, 569th USFPS installation patrolman.

There may be translators around, but language is not a hindrance wheth-er it’s the Polizei or Airmen approach-ing a suspect. Both sides ensure the other is backed up and ready to help, which instills mutual trust.

Polizei Kriminalhauptkommissar David Giesler said the joint patrols have not only reduced the crime rate in the Kaiserslautern area, but have also created a better operating envi-ronment for first responders in down-town Kaiserslautern.

Wessollek and Friend, along with the Polizei, hope to keep building a positive relationship and ensure public order. The 569th USFPS hopes to continue being a proven partner not only in Kaiserslautern, but also throughout its area of respon-sibility.

MACP builds KMC warrior spirit

Pfc. Devante Lester, air defense Soldier assigned to the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command’s 5th Battalion 7th Air Defense Artillery, practices takedowns with an Airman from the 86th Security Forces Squadron during a Basic Combatives Course Jan. 13 on Ramstein.

Story and photo by Sgt. 1st Class Alexander A. Burnett21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

Although the Modern Army Combatives Program is a pro-gram developed by the U.S. Army’s 2nd Ranger Battalion, it has spread throughout the military services. In build-ings, motor pools and grassy patches of land all over the world, U.S. service members are sweating, struggling and coming together to learn life-saving techniques through this 20-year-old program. This is Army combatives.

Soldiers and Airmen in the KMC are engaging in train-ing and certifi cation in the MACP, and units in the area are using the program to train and build camaraderie.

The 21st Theater Sustain-ment Command’s 21st Special Troops Battalion hosts a weekly “roll” on Panzer

Kaserne for all Soldiers in the command footprint. Warriors from the “First in Support” command sacrifi ce their lunch hours to practice techniques they are familiar with and learn new ones from more experienced noncom-missioned offi cers.

The battalion also plans to host Basic Combatives Course certifi cation in com-ing months, said Sgt. 1st Class Ronnell W. Foster, 21st TSC Ready and Resilient coordinator and combatives instructor.

“I think combatives is important in keeping our Soldiers in shape and building that warrior spirit that they need to have,” said Foster, a Detroit native. “When applied to the Army and the battle-fi eld, anything can happen. Weapons jam, systems mal-function and Soldiers need to know how to defend them-selves. That is what we prac-tice here.”

The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command’s 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery is also placing a strong emphasis on combat-ives training. Unit leaders are hosting multiple BCC and Tactical Combatives Course

certifi cations for Soldiers and Airmen serving in the KMC. Staff Sgt. Donald Thatcher, 5-7 ADA combatives master trainer, recently hosted a BCC certification on Ramstein Air Base for students from the 86th Security Forces Squadron.

“Whether they’re Army or Air Force, it doesn’t matter,” Thatcher said. “Combatives is a good skill to have and develop regardless of branch. Everyone who went through the course, Soldiers and Airmen, is leaving with a better understanding of these techniques and the ability to pass that knowledge along. This helps the warrior, no matter what branch.”

Airmen from the 86th SFS agreed with their instructor.

“As security forces we get some combatives training in the Air Force, but this training really solidifi es our capabili-ties,” said Air Force Staff Sgt. Kenneth G. Taylor, security

forces NCO. “Going through and rolling with the Army also brought the entire class together.”

Units from the Army and Air Force are making efforts to increase combatives train-ing and certifi cation in the future. Many leaders believe that this form of training is a way for any organization to build camaraderie and strengthen their warriors.

“Modern Army Combatives is not just a great way for Soldiers to train on life saving techniques that have real application on the battlefi eld,” said Staff Sgt. David Maybury, 7th Civil Support Command training NCO, a combatives master trainer certifi ed instructor. “When service members train together in combatives by rolling and practicing their technique, they strengthen their resiliency, build bonds and embody the warrior spir-it.”

Benefit options improve for eligible FEHB employeesby Janis El ShabazzAir Force Personnel Center Public Affairs

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Some temporary, seasonal and intermit-tent employees are now eligible for coverage under the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, Office of Personnel Management officials said.

Temporary, seasonal or intermittent employees who anticipate working 130 or more hours per month for 90 consecutive days are now eligible to receive the same coverage and government contri-bution to premiums as full-time employees.

“This expansion of coverage furthers the goal of ensuring that all full-time employees are eligible to enroll in FEHB,” said Erica Cathro, AFPC human resources specialist. “This change provides newly eligible employees a way to attain minimum essen-

tial coverage, which will also satisfy the Affordable Care Act individual shared responsibility require-ment.”

Newly eligible employees can enroll within 60 days of being notified of eligibility by the Benefits and Entitlements Service Team. Newly hired tem-porary, seasonal and intermittent employees who are eligible will also have a 60-day window to enroll. Coverage is effective the first day of the pay period after the employee makes his or her enroll-ment election.

Once employees are eligible for FEHB they will also be eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program. For more information about FLTCIP visit www.ltcfeds.com.

Air Force Personnel Center staffing specialists will ensure eligible employees hired for these types

of appointments are aware of the benefit option at the time of hire, based on the work schedule infor-mation their selecting official provides. BEST rep-resentatives have identified and notified all affected employees who were already on board. Supervisor certification of hours is required for enrollment in FEHB. Employees who believe they are eligible for FEHB who have not been formally notified should consult their supervisor.

For more information about this and other per-sonnel issues, visit the myPers website at https://mypers.af.mil. For FEHB eligibility and enroll-ment information, select “Search All Components” from the drop down menu and enter “28434” in the search window. Air Force retirees who do not have a myPers account can find instructions to create an account at www.retirees.af.mil/shared/media/ document/AFD-120510-068.pdf.

2015 calendar of events now availableby Astrid KleemannWindow to Rheinland-Pfalz

The Window to Rheinland-Pfalz team at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center announced the arrival of the 2015 issue of the “Calendar of events

for the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern area.”Throughout the past weeks, lots of visitors

of the information center have been asking for the popular booklet. This year marks the fifth year the calendar has been published by the City of Ramstein-Miesenbach as a joint ven-ture with several neighboring communities.

Over 28 pages, there are listings for more than 120 local events accompanied by a vari-ety of pictures. The calendar provides a month-ly overview of city and village festivals, fairs, markets, concerts and shows, including short descriptions of the events in English. The booklet depicts a choice of offers the local tourism representatives consider particularly interesting for English-speaking visitors.

The calendar covers the most important events in the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern areas, the union community of Landstuhl and Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, the holiday region of Lake Ohmbach/Glantal and the Donnersberg region. A map of the area was included to help locate the venues. The dates of bike event days, volksmarches and culinary hikes, as well as medieval markets and Christmas markets, are listed as well. Those interested in cul-tural events, sports and family events will find something to awaken their interest.

Also in the 2015 issue of the calendar is infor-mation about Rheinland-Pfalz-Tag, the state fair of Rhineland-Palatinate that takes place from June 26 to 28 in Ramstein-Miesenbach. During the event, visitors can enjoy a

festival atmosphere with musical entertain-ment and other performances. The highlight of the event is a festival parade scheduled for June 28.

The printed version of the 2015 event cal-endar is now available at the Window to Rheinland-Pfalz information counter at the KMCC. The brochures are distributed for free and will also be available at the German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern and at local tourist information centers.

The calendar can be downloaded at www.ramstein-gateway.com. On the English Window to Rheinland-Pfalz Web page visitors can find information about the region as well as further details about local events, which are updated weekly.

German Polizei worry about wrong-way driversFrom Nov. 15 to

Jan. 17, several motor-ists, who drove wrong-fully in the opposite direction, were report-ed on Autobahn A62 between interchanges Landstuhl-Atzel and Bann. They caused a danger to themselves and others.

Polizei officials said this is not a new occurrence. In 2013, several wrong direc-tion drivers were noted in Hörnchenberg Tunnel. Luckily, no accidents were caused.

After inspecting the inter-change again, the Mobility State Office installed addi-tional observation cameras in both tunnel tubes. Since then,

Polizei were able to identify two wrong-way drivers. No accidents occurred, but the motorists will receive serious consequences, including either a criminal charge or suspen-sion of the driver’s license.

Polizei officials again want

to point out to locals and U.S. service mem-bers that turning on the autobahn is forbidden, no matter what the GPS says. Also, exiting the autobahn is only autho-rized at exits or inter-changes.

Polizei and the Mobility State Office are examining further measures to increase safety in the area of Hörnchenberg Tunnel, including adding addi-

tional markings of direction arrows and the installation of special signs at tunnel entranc-es. One measure is essential in the future: motorists must pay attention.

by Matthew Forker and Dakota MacDonaldKaiserslautern High School students

Many people have theorized on what makes this world go ‘round, but no one has come closer than those who agree

on science. Science is quite literally what keeps our Earth turning, our plants growing and our bodies working. However, it’s hard to forget the smaller parts of science that we enjoyed as children. Take magnetism, for example. Such a “simple” concept of attraction of opposites and repulsion of similar sides could entertain for days, but even the science behind magnets is more complicated on a level we once never knew.

This is where science becomes a universally enjoyable subject at school. Students from their elementary to high school years can learn the vari-

ous realms of knowledge that science has to offer. Nancy Hoehn’s Kaiserslautern High School phys-ics application classes were able to experience

this fi rst-hand with groups of Kaiserslautern Elementary School’s younger students.

For four days, these adolescents and children, separated by age, intermingled to engage in activities involving magnetism, light, electric-ity, forces, motion and properties of matter. With six different stations that each younger student rotated through, it’s no surprise the room was fi lled with excitement and energy. Each demon-stration taught one of the aforementioned parts of physics.

Using inquiry-based learning, Hoehn’s stu-dents were able to teach the fi rst through fi fth graders all about science in everyday life and more abstract parts of the scientifi c world in which we live. Having fun while learning has become a much greater part of learning, now

more than ever, and it’s easy to see with the smiles on children’s faces lighting up as they’re taught sci-ence. After all, science is what makes the world go ‘round.

Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Alexander A. Burnett21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

On Sunday, the National Football League 2014 season will culminate in the epic battle between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. Televisions across the globe will tune in, and people will stay up to all hours of the night to enjoy this American treasure live. For those stationed in the KMC, only two questions come to mind: Who to root for? Where to watch the game?

Service members and family members across the KMC have several options available to them when selecting a site to watch Super Bowl XLIX, sched-uled to air at 12:35 a.m. Monday.

The Kazabra ClubLocated close to Vogelweh Housing, this option

offers a close drive or cheap taxi ride for Super Bowl spectators. Doors open at 9 p.m. Sunday and all present can enjoy the final round of Battle of the DJs at 10 p.m. Cost of entry is $15 at the door. For information, call 0631-536-7261.

J.R. RockersAirmen and Soldiers can enjoy the Super Bowl

at the Ramstein Enlisted Club. Doors open at 10 p.m. Sunday, and there will be games with cash prizes. For more information, call 06371-405-5475.

At home, anywhere in the KMCWith an Armed Forces Network decoder and a

TV, anyone can watch this year’s Super Bowl from the comfort of their own home.

When asked who will win the Super Bowl this year, several Soldiers from the 21st Theater

Sustainment Command chimed in with their opin-ions.

“I definitely think the Seattle Seahawks are going to win,” said Spc. Mason F. Liddile, 21st TSC Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 21st Special Troops Battalion armorer. “They have better defense and an overall better team. I prom-ise my opinion has nothing to do with the recent ‘Deflategate’ debate.”

Meanwhile, a noncommissioned officer from the 21st STB property book office offered a different opinion.

“I am rooting for the Patriots, and they will win,” said Sgt. Lee C. Harris, 21st STB property book NCO. “They have Tom Brady, and that’s all they need.”

Regardless of where service members watch the game or who they root for, safety should be consid-ered at all times and everyone should have a plan to return home safely after the game ends.

Super Bowl XLIX: where to watch, who to root for

Man on the Street We asked: What are your Super Bowl plans?

Sgt. Lee C. Harris,21st TSC, 21st STB, property book NCO“I am going to invite over some friends, cook up some ribs and baked beans, and order some chicken wings. We will enjoy the game from the comfort of my house. I am a big Tom Brady fan, and that’s why I am rooting for the Pats.”

Sgt. Eric J. Song,21st TSC, 773rd CST, 7th CSC CBRN survey team member“I am from Seattle, and I have been a Seahawks fan since 1995. I will be on an exercise in Baumholder dur-ing the game, but we are hoping to use Wi-Fi and a buddy’s NFL pass to watch the game up there.”

Sgt. Joshua Overton,21st TSC mail room NCOIC“I am rooting for the Seahawks just to spite the Patriots. As a Colts fan, I have to root against the Pats. I will probably go to Chuck’s Diner to watch the game since they broadcast it with commercials and always have good food specials.”

Spc. Michael B. Erickson,21st TSC, Headquarters,Headquarters Company, 21st STB mechanic“As a Broncos fan, I just don’t want the Patriots to win. I will probably watch the game at the Kazabra Club on Vogelweh Military Complex.”

Capt. Korey G. Lewis,21st TSC, 7th CSC, 793rd MCT commander“I like the Seahawks as a team, and I always root for a National Football Conference team if I can. I will be on temporary duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky, so I will have to find a place to watch the game.”

Spc. Mason F. Liddile,21st TSC, Headquarters,Headquarters Company, 21st STB armorer“I definitely think the Seattle Seahawks are going to win. They have better defense and an overall better team. I am going to watch the game at J.R. Rockers on Ramstein Air Base.”

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Randy Novobilski,Det. 319 detachment chief“I will be watching the game in sunny Satellite Beach, Florida. As a New York Giants fan, rooting for the Patriots keeps my loyalties on the East Coast.”

militaryIN GERMANYExplore your new home

www.MilitaryInGermany.comGreat city trips, fun playgrounds for kids, delicious recipes and much more.

Fasching is a traditional German cel-ebration – also known as Karneval or Fastnacht. It is carnival season, which has been celebrated for centuries by people worldwide with German heritage. It’s utterly bonkers and terrifi c fun – get involved!

Fasching can be documented back to pre-Roman times. These times were extremely diffi cult for the average person and so the carnival season was a chance to be free, enjoy life and have some fun in a world where fun was non-existent for many. The masks and costumes of today date back to the medieval times when they were not in place as fun decorations but as ways to avoid punishment and persecution as carnival goers would mock the strict rulers of the day. Had they not used masks to disguise themselves they would have been caught and death would have been an inevitability.

Fasching is celebrated in all German speaking countries and it’s timing in the year is poignant as it is just before the fasting season of Lent, which is when many people will forsake food as a sacrifi ce for religious reasons. Fasching allows a person to have a huge celebration, indulge, enjoy and embrace all that is good before things are out of bounds during Lent.

Germany is the country which holds the larg-est and most vibrant carnivals to celebrate the Fasching season with every city having it’s own celebrations. The city of Cologne (Köln) proba-bly holds one of the biggest carnival celebrations in the country. Many places of work see this time as a public holiday, though it is not yet offi cially recognized as one. This means to have the time off, your boss needs to be a fan!

Altweiber FastnachtThe Fasching celebrations begin with the ‘Woman’s Carnival’ which happens on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, also known as Altweiber Fastnacht. This is a day when women can express their freedom and have a lot of fun! Ladies are encouraged to cut the ties of men and also place kisses on a man of their fancy, it is a fl irty, fun and much looked forward to event – from both genders!

RosenmontagRosenmontag or Rose Monday is what comes next; this is a major highlight with many danc-ers, marching bands, fl oat parades and streets fi lled with entertainment for all. These days the masks mentioned are more extravagant and more modern with the faces of politicians and prolifi c fi gures caricaturized upon them. Look out for masks and edifi ces of German leader, Angela Merkel!

FastnachtdienstagThe celebrations come to an end on Ash Wednesday but prior to this is the much sought after Shrove Tuesday or Fastnachtdienstag in German. This is where you get down on your fi nery and attend many costume balls that are held all over Germany.

CostumesFasching is very much a time where everyone, and especially children, like to dress up in fancy dress to take part in the fun. You will notice all the German department stores around you will start promoting their fancy dress costumes ready for the parties and parades of Fasching. For those of you based in Wiesbaden, you can save 10% off Fasching costumes you buy at Party Schlaudt Wiesbaden – see page 129 of the 2015 Find it Guide Wiesbaden Edition, for a discount voucher.

NarrenrufeNarrenrufe is the collective name of the vari-ous Carnival greetings that people call out to each other in the street during carnival season. Each city/region tends to have its own so its good to learn your local Narrenruf so you can join in the fun!
