Obama nominates new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffby Cheryl PellerinDepartment of Defense News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON — On May 5, President Barack Obama nominated Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. to serve as the 19th chair-man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Air Force Gen. Paul J. Selva to serve as the 10th vice chairman.

During an announcement in the White House Rose Garden, the president said that among military leaders, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the principal military adviser to him and his nation-al security team. Introducing his choice of who will be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Obama called Dunford, one of the mil-itary’s most admired offi cers.

Dunford is a Boston native, the son of a retired Boston police offi cer and a Marine veteran of Korea, the presi-dent said.

“Joe followed in his

father’s footsteps and has dis-tinguished himself through nearly 40 years of military service,” Obama added.

Dunford has commanded Marines in the fi eld from the platoon level to a Marine expeditionary force. During the invasion of Iraq, he led Marines in the charge to Baghdad, Obama said.

give me his unvarnished military advice based on his experience on the ground,” Obama continued.

Under Dunford’s steady hand, Afghanistan achieved key milestones, including taking the lead for their own security, historic elections and the drawdown of U.S. forces, the president said — all of which set the stage for the end of the U.S. combat mission there.

Obama thanked Dunford and his wife, Ellyn, for their continued ser-vice to the nation before introducing vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Paul Selva.

Pilot and commanderSelva is a pilot and a commander

with 35 years of military service.“As leader of Air Mobility

Command, he earned a reputation as a force for change and innovation,” Obama said. “I understand that when

it was time to deliver the final C-17 (Globemaster III) to the Air Force, Paul went to the cockpit and helped fly it himself.”

As head of U.S. Transportation Command, the president said Selva has been committed to partnerships that are a core principle of the national security strategy, “whether it’s supply-ing our joint force around the world in operations large and small, to support-ing and keeping safe our diplomats and embassy personnel overseas.”

Because Selva served as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s military adviser for the first years of Obama’s presidency, he grasps the strategic environment in which U.S. forces operate, the president added.

Next chapter of service“He understands that our military,

as powerful as it is, is one tool that must be used in concert with all the elements of our national power,” Obama said, thanking Selva and his

wife, Ricki, who also served in the Air Force, for taking on this next chapter of their service together.

In a statement released May 5, Carter said that Dunford has been an infantry officer at every level, and that Selva has been an innovator through-out his career.

“They’re exemplary leaders, and they both have the strategic perspec-tive and operational experience to help guide our military and advise the president at a time of much change in the world,” Carter said.

Global security challengesAlso in a statement, Chairman of the

Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin E. Dempsey said he has known Dunford for nearly half of his 39 years of service.

“He is a phenomenal, combat-test-ed leader and a man of integrity, cour-age and humility,” Dempsey said.

Gen. Selva is also a leader of com-petence and character,” the chairman continued. “He has a tremendous

understanding of the global security challenges we face and experience at every echelon of command, most recently leading our global transporta-tion network.”

As Obama concluded his remarks, he told Dunford and Selva that the nation continues to call on its armed forces to meet a range of challenges.

“We have to keep training Afghan forces and remain relentless against al-Qaida. We have to push back against ISIL and strengthen forces in Syria and build moderate opposition in Syria,” he said.

The nation also must stand unit-ed with its allies in Europe and keep rebalancing its posture as a Pacific power, and continue to invest in new capabilities to meet grow-ing threats, including cyberattacks, Obama added.

“As commander in chief, I’ll be looking to you for your honest mili-tary advice as we meet these chal-lenges,” he said.

Professionalism, fundamental to leadershipby Chief Master Sgt. Frank J. Lakotich Operations Superintendent, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron

As I look around and interact with the Airmen assigned to Ramstein and within the KMC, I’m truly amazed at the number of tech-nological advances the Air Force has experi-enced since I joined 27 years ago.

As basic as advancing from carbon-copy forms, typewriters and the skills to manually operate them to autofill digital forms and com-puters on each desk, the past several decades have proven our abilities to leverage technol-ogy to do more with less.

Still, one thing has not changed through the years — the demand for our Airmen to be the most dedicated and true professionals our country has to offer. Professionalism has and always will be the foundation for which our missions and core values are built upon, and it strengthens our ability to work as a team to accomplish anything.

I’ve been asked by many Airmen what skill-set is imperative to being a successful leader. That skillset is professionalism, period. The

follow-up question usually is my definition of the word, and I always respond without a definition and a series of questions for them to answer.

Do you lead by example? Do you walk past that piece of trash on the ground, or do you stop and pick it up? Do you address everyone as ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’, say ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ when appropriate, and treat others as you want to be treated? Do you actively listen to folks when they’re talking to you, or are you pre-occupied multitasking on your smartphone? These are a few observations I ask folks to reflect upon to help define the meaning of pro-fessional.

But professionalism doesn’t stop there or at the end of each work shift. We’re Airmen — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We’re expected to maintain those professional behav-iors off duty as well.

When standing in line seven-people-deep with only one register open, when posting our opinions on social networking sites, and when interacting with our host nation friends, the expectation to be professional remains stead-fast and without question.

Before you put on your “Facebook lawyer” hat and post something, ask yourself if this is something you’re ready to answer to with your leadership. If the answer to that question is ‘no’ or you hesitated in your decision, then it’s probably safe to say it’s not professional.

It is very important to remember we’re ambassadors here, and our behavior while stationed abroad reflects not only on our-selves, but the country we swore to defend. It’s expected we treat our hosts with the utmost professionalism while we are guests in their country.

Why am I sharing this with you? With the constant mission churn, numerous process changes the past year, and our heavy deploy-ment requirements on the horizon, now, more than ever, is the time to reflect on ourselves and tighten up those behaviors which don’t measure up to the expectation.

I see and address it every day. With every-one’s continued effort to exceed expectations, “Good-ship Ramstein” will continue to be the place to be in Europe, and I have no doubt for many years to come. It starts with your profes-sionalism. Are you ready to lead?

Airmen learn to LEADStory and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A irman 1st Class Dillon Fowler and Senior Airman Ryan Pastor began

their days with an abrupt notification that they weren’t going to report straight to work. They had someone waiting for them elsewhere — their commanders.

“We had no idea what was going on,” said Fowler, 86th Communications Squadron cable maintenance techni-cian. “I was thinking back and thought, ‘Well, I don’t remember doing anything wrong.’”

With just a few words, both Airmen were told they were selected to become cadets through the Leaders Encouraging Airman Develop-ment program at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

“I didn’t make the list of direct entries, so I didn’t expect to make it,” said Pastor, 460th Space Communications Squadron radio frequency transmissions system jour-neyman. “I was a little ner-vous, but mostly excited.”

Every year, Airmen who meet the academy’s require-ments to apply are nomi-nated for the highly selec-tive LEAD program, where Airmen who demonstrate exceptional leadership qual-ities and excellent work ethic are nominated to com-

mission through the acad-emy. Airmen are either sent straight into the academy or through a one-year prepara-tory school prior to attend-ing the academy.

Capt. Melanie Frost, exec-utive officer for the Area 730th Academy Admissions Liaison Officers, believes Airmen accepted through this program are a grade above other entering cadets.

“Typically, prior enlisted become the class presidents of their classes,” Frost said. “They demonstrate a lot of peer leadership, and their peers look up to them.”

Fowler and Pastor both come from small-town life-styles (Bath, N.Y. and Byron, Calif. respectively). Both were raised to be hard work-ers, normally found tweaking and fixing up projects of their own. This aspect of their lives carried over to their Air Force careers.

“I’ll miss working here. I love to work. I’ve grown up my whole life working,” Fowler said. “It’ll be differ-ent managing a lot of people instead of always working hands-on.”

However, neither Airman has regrets about moving his career forward. Both have a positive outlook on their careers and where their futures are heading.

“I guess the part I’m look-ing forward to most is being able to see good leadership

and to take what I’ve learned here and what I’m going to learn and apply it toward helping people steer them-selves in the right direction and do my job the best I can,” Pastor said.

Pastor hopes it will be he who is sitting in an office

staring at one of his Airmen, ready to promote him or her to the academy. It’ll be a moment when he knows he has succeeded in being an officer.

With just a few words, he’ll have changed an Airman for-ever.

First female F-35 pilot begins training

by 1st Lt. Hope Cronin33rd Fighter Wing Public Affairs

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — The Department of Defense welcomed its first female F-35 Lightning II pilot at Eglin Air Force Base May 5.

Lt. Col. Christine Mau, the 33rd Fighter Wing Operations Group deputy commander, completed her first training flight in the single-seat, fifth-generation fighter following 14 virtual training missions in the full mission simulator at the F-35 Academic Training Center.

“It wasn’t until I was taxi-ing to the runway that it really struck me that I was on my own in the jet,” Mau said, for-merly an F-15E Strike Eagle pilot. “I had a chase aircraft, but there was no weapon sys-tems officer or instructor pilot sitting behind me, and no one in my ear like in simulators.”

With that, like the other 87 F-35A pilots trained over the last four years, Mau thundered down the runway and was airborne as the first woman in the Air Force’s pre-mier fighter.

“It felt great to get air-borne. The jet flies like a dream, and seeing the sys-tems interact is impressive. Flying with the Helmet Mounted Display (System) takes some adjusting, but it’s an easy adjustment,” Mau said. “The training missions in the simulator prepare you very well, so you’re ready for that flight.”

The initial flight in the F-35 training syllabus is designed to orient pilots with the physical aspects of flying the F-35 compared to other fighters they’ve flown pre-viously, such as the F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15C Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II or F-22 Raptor. Women have served in combat aviation roles in aircraft such as these as well as other aircraft for more than 20 years.

Mau acknowledged that although she may be the first female in the F-35 program, her gender has no bearing on her performance as a fighter pilot. She joked that the only difference between her and her fellow F-35 pilots is the size of her G-suit and face-mask — they are both extra small.

“Flying is a great equal-izer,” Mau said. “The plane doesn’t know or care about your gender as a pilot, nor do the ground troops who need your support. You just have to perform. That’s all anyone cares about when you're up there — that you can do your job, and that you do it excep-tionally well.”

Mau’s combat experience and technical prowess in the cockpit were the primary draws for her selection to her position with the 33rd OG.

“Lt. Col. Mau brings a valuable level of combat and operational knowledge to our team,” said Col. Todd

and partnership between the reserves association and the 4th ASOG,” said Cmdr. Jürgen Lemke, Rheinland-Pfalz Res-ervist Chapter Undenheim chairman. “We have had sev-eral occasions where we meet, train and have fun together. We appreciate the attendance of the Airmen here. It gives this event international flavor.”

The ruck march is the third joint event this year for the two units, and there are many more to come.

“These events let us talk about the different military systems,” Lemke said. “The different states everybody is from, or just talking about movies and other hobbies. It’s perfect — everybody is happy that the Air Force is part of our event.”

During this event, the U.S. and German airmen worked side-by-side to complete one of the many steps for the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency.

Other tasks included a

weapons competition, med-ical evaluations, fitness examinations and a 100-meter swim.

Even though they compet-ed for an award, 4th ASOG Airmen agree that the friend-ships and partners they built are a better reward, especially during the German May Day celebration.

“I want to thank the Undenheim reservist chap-ter for inviting us to this wonderful opportunity to ruck with them and enjoy their holiday together,” said Capt. Christian Robertson, 4th ASOG air liaison offi-cer. “Training events like this ruck march, or fire-arms training in the past and even ceremonial events like last year’s Memorial Day ceremony, help us come together.”

Whether it’s chasing a badge or running alongside a new friend, members of the 4th ASOG continue to build relationships between allies with events similar to this, Robertson said.

The German Wine Road Celebrates the Almond Blossom

Local Wine We took a leisurely drive this past weekend to

a couple of festivals along the Weinstrasse. We stopped fi rst in Edenkoben to try their local wine made with almond blossoms and took a walk in the vineyards. As with most of the festivals in small German villages, there were several ven-dors selling wine, food and crafts.

Pink LightsAs the afternoon turns to evening and day-

light begins to fade, many fortresses, castles, churches and city gates along the Wine Road are lit up in pink lights (Rosa Leuchten). We decid-ed to have a late day drive from the Edenkoben Almond Mile and ended at the Dionysius Chapel in Gleiszellen for their festival.

Pfälzer Mandelpfad RouteIf you have several hours (or possibly the op-

portunity to make it a weekend trip), there is a route called the “Pfälzer Mandelpfad” (Palatinate Almond Trail) that you can follow. It runs for about 50 miles, stretching between Bad Dürkheim all the way down to Bad Bergzabern, right on the French border. Almond trees have been cultivated in this area for centuries, and to date, you can fi nd all sorts of treats made with almonds from sweets to liqueurs to pralines.

Other Villages on the Wine RoadSome of the Wine Road’s most picturesque

villages and good bets for blossom-spotting in-clude Deidesheim, Neustadt, Maikammer, St. Martin, Kirrweiler, Edenkoben and Bad Bergz-abern. There are also numerous tours during the days and evenings along the Palatinate Almond Trail. This very special hiking trail runs through the land of almond blossoms for 77 kilometers.

Rosa Leuchten ToursDuring Rosa Leuchten, there are many differ-

ent tour options available, including 4 day and 8 day tours, bike tours and walking tours. You can even plant your own almond tree! Visit Mandel-blüte in der Pfalz or German Wine Route for more information on events, tours and directions.

How to Get ThereThe German Wine Road (Deutsche Wein-

strasse) is Germany’s oldest tourist wine route. Established in 1935, it is located in the Palatinate region of the state Rhineland-Palatinate (Rhein-land-Pfalz).

Though running through several villages, here is a starting point on the Wine Road. The Wine Road is less than 1 hour east of Kaiserslautern,

just over 1 hour south of Wiesbaden and 1 hour and 40 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.

To visit one of the towns mentioned above on the Wine Road, check the Deutsche Bahn’s web-site at www.bahn.de for more information.

Operation Spirit creates relationships between German, American studentsStory and photos by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

More than 80 German and American stu-dents participat-

ed in Operation Spirit May 7 on Panzer Kaserne.

Twenty-one German stu-dents from Albert Schweitzer High School and 60 stu-dents from Kaiserslautern Elementary, Middle and High Schools took part in this annual event in order to promote relationships between American and German students.

This event, organized by the Sgt. Morales Club and the Special Troops Battalion, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, included discus-sions, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

The students were greeted

by Sgt. 1st Class Marcus Mitchell, president of the Sgt. Morales Club and key organizer of the event. They also received a resil-ience briefing from Staff Sgt. Patrick Williams, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st TSC.

“Everybody here is already 100 percent resilient because you are sitting here today,” Williams said. “Resilience is your strength. The key to suc-cess is getting past the sad times.”

Lt. Col. Caprissa Brown-Slade, commander of the 21st Special Troops Batt-alion, and Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Mainor, sergeant major of the 21st STB, also welcomed the students and discussed the importance of building relationships with our host nation partners.

The students were filled

with excitement as they assisted firefighters from the U.S. Army Fire Station East in putting out fires using fire extinguishers.

Autumn Collins, a junior at KHS, fulfilled a dream of hers by climbing into the cab of the fire truck.

“I’ve always wanted to see what this was like,” Collins said. “I really want to be a firefighter.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney Rhoades, the senior enlisted noncommissioned officer for the 21st TSC, also visited the students.

“You are here today to experience some of the amazing opportunities the Army has to offer that you may not have known about,” Rhoades said. “But your real mission today is to build relationships with each other. Building relationships

is the most important thing we do here.”

Many other events took place that day. There was a demonstration by the dog han-dlers from the 100th Military Working Dog Detachment and their work dog, Valerie, as she apprehended a suspicious character.

Riggers from the 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company awed the students by showing them how to properly fold and pack a parachute. Afterward, sever-al students tried on the heavy packs.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Comm-and, demonstrated how their robots disarm a bomb. There was also a Soldier clothed in his hazardous material suit ready to recover the bomb if needed. All of the students

had the opportunity to test out the robots and try on the suit.

After the event, student and adult participants felt that Operation Spirit had met its goal.

“This event was a great way to meet host nation students and have fun,” said Gracyn Redding, a sixth-grader at KMS. “If you want to be a firefighter, dog handler or diffuse bombs, it was an excellent hands-on experience. I liked the robots.”

Heinke Balzulat, a mem-ber of German American Women’s Club and the orga-nizer of the German stu-dents’ participation, felt that Operation Spirit was terrific.

“This was a great day, especially for these German students,” Balzulat said. “They don’t know anything about the Americans in Germany.”

Kirsten Hage, school psy-chologist at KHS also agreed.

“Operation Spirit is aimed at supporting ‘Generation War,’” Hage said. “Many of these students have grown up having their parents deployed multiple times.”

Today’s event has shown them firsthand what highly trained professionals their parents are,” Hage contin-ued. “The students learned about a variety of careers both in and out of the mili-tary. As young ambassadors, they made real connections today with German students, which enhance our host nation relationships.”

KHS students celebrate Law Day with mock trialStory and photo by Brandon Beach21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

The four-hour mock trial, held May 4 in the Warren J. Argue Courtroom

on Kleber Kaserne, had all the legal components of an actual case: a plaintiff and defendant, attorneys, witness-es, court reporters, a bailiff — only the roles were played by high school students.

The verdict was in: Casey Jones was a free man.

The soft-spoken custodi-an from Loganville, Ill., was charged with two counts of home invasion and aggravat-ed battery following a May 2014 incident at his ex-girl-friend’s home.

The five-person jury returned to the courtroom following 20 minutes of deliberations and announced Jones as “not guilty.” Jones let out a sigh of relief and turned to high-five the mem-bers of his defense team, Thomas Dore, Matthew Jackson, Gemma Lovett and Donald Ratcliff — all stu-dents from Kaiserslautern High School.

Mock Trial 2015 was the culminating event for students taking “Street Law,” a semes-ter-long course taught by KHS teacher Mark Fairchild.

“It’s an introduction to the legal system and the basic concepts of jurisprudence,” Fairchild said. “I tell (stu-dents) before the class they will get a chance to practice law in front of real legal pro-fessionals.”

Col. David H. Robertson, an Army chief circuit court judge with the Kaiserslautern Legal Services Center, presid-ed over the trial in which pros-ecution and defense teams

provided opening statements, examined witnesses, present-ed evidence and offered clos-ing arguments.

Sitting in as jurors were legal professionals from the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, who also worked with the students for about a month formulating their legal strategies.

“Lawyers have a lot of preparation to do, a lot of on-

the-spot thinking because you never know what the opposing side is going to throw at you,” said Ayress Grinage, a KHS senior and member of the pros-ecution side. “Cross examina-tion is really where you have to think on your feet.”

Grinage said she is off to the University of Florida to study biology in the fall, but confessed she hasn’t ruled out a future in law. Other students have also shown an interest in

the legal profession since the semester started nearly four months ago.

“It’s really a great oppor-tunity, and a lot of us are interested in law,” said Justin Hebert, a KHS senior who was named “Best Attorney” at the trial. “I want to major in criminal justice once I gradu-ate (high school), and I figure this is a great chance to see if this is really what I want to do.”

The mock trial coincides every year with Law Day, a special day recognized by the American Bar Association. This year’s theme centered on the Magna Carta, a doc-ument written 800 years ago in an attempt to make peace between King John of England and a group of rebel barons. The document is noteworthy in the U.S. for its influence on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The fourth of its kind between the school and the legal office, this year’s mock trial was organized by Fairchild and Conchita Dunn, 21st TSC lead court reporter.

“I try to make it as realistic as possible,” Dunn said. “If you came in here and this was a court marshal, it would look almost identical.”

And with that, Judge Robertson struck down his gavel: case closed.

Gemma Lovett (left), a junior at Kaiserslautern High School, shows a piece of evidence to the plaintiff Kelly Morgan, played by Cherchlyn Sackey, during a mock trial held at the Warren J. Argue Courtroom May 4 on Kleber Kaserne.

Canterbury, the 33rd FW commander. “We’re nearly a year out from declaring Initial Operational Capability with the F-35. We need battle-tested pilots to help us put the F-35A through its paces and ensure we have a trained and ready force of F-35 pilots to feed into our combat air forces.”

Canterbury witnessed Mau’s leadership and combat effectiveness firsthand when they were both deployed to Afghanistan in 2011, where she was part of another important milestone for women in the combat aviation community.

While with the 389th Expeditionary Fighter Squad-ron, Mau was part of the first all-female combat sortie. The

combat mission provided air support to coalition and Afghan forces in the Kunar Valley, Afghanistan. From the pilots and weapon systems officers of the two F-15E jets to the mission planners and maintainers, the entire mis-sion was carried out entirely by women.

“As a service, we need to attract the most innovative and skillful Airmen possible for one reason — it makes us more effective,” Canterbury said. “The broader the net that we cast into the talent pool, coupled with a laser focus on performance, ensures we have the best Airmen in place to carry out the mis-sion. Performance is key, and it's the standard we hold all of our Airmen to in the Air Force.”

NATO bands rehearse for multinational Jazz Nightby Headquarters Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office

The musicians of the German Army Band Koblenz, the Dixie Group of Luxem-bourg’s Military Band and the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Big Band will present a joint Jazz Night June 20 at the Kammgarn Cultural Center in Kaiserslautern.

Each of these profession-al musicians have performed individually on countless stag-es, but never have they per-formed during a joint session. On this occasion, they will first perform individually in the Kammgarn Casino and then rock the audience as a multina-tional NATO Jazz Night Band.

To prepare for this event, 24 military musicians from three nations recently met at Koblenz to rehearse their joint appearance onstage. It

was important to familiarize all of the participants since the three band leaders will take turns in directing the

joint band performances. Adjutant major Christian

Kirpes, director of the Luxembourg Dixieland Band,

was not the only one pleased with the outcome of the rehearsal.

“For months we have now

been planning this event,” Kirpes said. “The musicians were excited to see how this joint rehearsal would go. Now they are very much looking forward to the actual event on June 20 at Kammgarn Kaiserslautern.”

The NATO Jazz Night is the successor event to the NATO Music Festival, which was organized jointly by the City of Kaiserslautern and NATO’s Air Command on Ramstein from 1965 to 2011. The focus of this new event idea will be on jazz music. The venue and organizer of the NATO Jazz Night 2015 is Kammgarn Kaiserslautern. NATO Jazz Night proceeds go to the NATO Music Festival Foundation in support of charitable and non-profit projects. For tickets, visit www.kammgarn.de or go visit https://www.kammgarn.de/programm/detail/775/nato_jazz_night/.

AFOSI agent displays service before selfby Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The “whole-person” con-cept is the idea within the Air Force that Airmen not only perform their jobs, but strive to go above and beyond meet-ing minimum requirements, achieving personal and pro-fessional growth, and being an active member in their local communities.

Special Agent Emmanuel Merhan, Air Force Office of Special Investigations, 4th Field Investigation Squadron, is an Airman who endeav-ors to portray aspects of the “whole-person” concept as a part of life — doing so result-ed in him being awarded one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans award.

“Emmanuel embodies the ‘whole-person’ concept,” said Special Agent Shane Moon, AFOSI, 4th FIS, who has worked with Merhan for the last year. “He knows service to others positively affects every-one and everything in his life. Those actions, firmly rooted in his faith, will, and do, trans-form every aspect of his life,

including his service to the Air Force and his country.”

On March 28 in Nashville, Tenn., Merhan was honored by the United States Junior Chamber with the award which in the past has been presented to Bill Clinton, Elvis Presley and Wayne Newton.

“I believe he was chosen for the TOYA award because of his dedication and com-mitment to serving people in his life — friends, fam-ily, neighbors and complete strangers,” Moon said. “I believe he serves and loves people in his life because he truly cares. People can spot a phony from a mile away, and Emmanuel is not a phony, not even slightly.”

Despite the people around him telling him he deserves the award, Merhan had a hard time accepting it.

“I try to maintain a humble spirit, one of true humility, so it was extremely difficult for me to be acknowledged in this way,” Merhan said. “I decided to take this platform and boast about the number one thing in my life, and that’s my faith.”

While working with his church, City Mission Kaisers-

lautern, the Sugarland, Texas native caught the attention of one of his co-workers, who nominated him for the award under the Humanitarian and Volunteer Leadership cat-egory.

Through church, Merhan reaches out to refugees from Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East who have come to Germany, including the less fortunate within the German community. He helps organize and manage what they call a “Hope Market,” where dona-tions of clothes, appliances, small furniture, produce and bread are available for those in need to take as much or as little as necessary.

“It’s not just about meet-ing their physical needs, but also meeting their spiritual needs and letting them know they have brothers, sisters and friends here,” Merhan said. “It’s not about giving them free stuff and hoping that their lives get better. We want to do whatever else we can to help in all areas of their lives. It’s about that relationship.”

Along with his work for refugees, Merhan is also involved in programs that edu-cate youths about the dangers

of substance abuse, and he volunteers for the Wounded Warrior Program, assisting wounded military members as they transition back to the U.S.

Merhan’s desire to help those around him does not stop with the local community. Ever since he was little, he said he wanted to be a police officer.

“For me, the draw of OSI was having a hand in making the Air Force a better place,” Merhan said. “You have the ability to directly impact and shape what it looks like by

getting the guilty people out and exonerating the people who are innocent. You feel like there is a sense of pro-tecting the Air Force.”

The Air Force encourag-es Airmen to become more than their respective jobs and to have a positive impact on those around them. Living through his faith, Merhan devotes himself to serving others and his country, using each day as a stepping stone towards becoming a well-rounded Airman.
