Introducing Wi-Fi Protected Setup:Easing setup in home and small office networks

• Wi-Fi Protected Setup is anoptional certification programdesigned to ease set up ofsecurity-enabled Wi-Finetworks in the home andsmall office environment

• This new optional certificationprogram provides two easy-to-use methods to configure a network:– Push-Button Configuration– PIN / numeric code

• WFA Authorized Test Labs are taking orders and the first products willenter the market during Q1 2007

As more and more consumers adopt Wi-Fi, ease of setupand protecting networks is more important than ever.


Consumers love Wi-Fi, but they want itto be easier to set up and protect

• Strong security is a requirement on Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices, butenabling it has up to now been somewhat difficult…– 2 in 5 consumers still have not activated the security on their Wi-Fi

network*– 44% of consumers described activating security on a Wi-Fi network

as moderately to very difficult**– Most (83%) of people think using

someone else’s Wi-Fi networkwithout their knowledge is “stealing,”but about half of people admit thatthey have done so***

Wi-Fi Protected Setup has broad industrysupport across the value chain

• This program is based upon the firstspecification developed solely by WFAmember companies– Broad support for a consistent,

industry-wide solution led to a largeand active task group

– Silicon, devices, software, andservice providers all participated

• The Wi-Fi Simple Config Specificationdetails Wi-Fi protected setup and ispublicly available at www.wi-fi.org

How Wi-Fi Protected Setup works

• A consumer brings home new Wi-FiCERTIFIED Wi-Fi Protected Setup APand client device and turns them on

• The network detects their presenceautomatically

• The user pushes the button or isprompted to enter a PIN

• The network name and encryptioninformation are securely transferred tothe device

• A variety of devices can support Wi-FiProtected Setup, from PCs andAP/routers to cameras and phones

• New client devices can easily join anexisting Wi-Fi Protected Setup network


Outlining PIN and Push Button methods

PIN Configuration:• Unique 4- or 8-digit PIN

required for each device onthe network

• PIN is entered into Registrarvia a graphical user interface

• Registrar is an entity on thenetwork that issues andrevokes credentials

• WPA or WPA2 security isenabled, and the passphrasecan be auto-generated orconfigured by the user

Push-button Configuration:• User pushes button on AP

and client device(s)• Especially useful for devices

without a PC-type of interface• Final result is the same as PIN

method: WPA or WPA2security is enabled, and thepassphrase can be auto-generated or configured bythe user

Coming later this year: Near FieldCommunication (NFC) method, in whicha user touches a token or card to adevice. NFC support is expected to beadded in 1H 2007

FAQ: Adding new devices to a network

• What happens when I bring a new Wi-Fi ProtectedSetup device home to add to my existing Wi-FiProtected Setup network?– PIN: You will access the registrar on a client

device that is already on the network and enter thenew device’s PIN. Then the new device will beauthenticated and configured to join the network.

– PBC: You will push the button on the AP and thenew client device, and it will be joined to thenetwork.


FAQ: Protecting against unauthorized users

• How does Wi-Fi Protected Setup help ensure that myneighbor is not able to join a device to my network?– PIN: To add a device to the network, you must

have access to the registrar device via an existingclient on the network. A neighbor’s device will notbe able to join without entering the device PIN onthe Registrar.

– PBC: To add a device to the network, you musthave physical access to push the button on theAP, so unless your neighbor can enter your home,he or she cannot join a device to your network.
