    FIRE EMERGENCIES

    If you discover a fire:

Alert people in the area to evacuate (if you are trained on how to use the fire

extinguisher, you many help out to put out the fire if it is a small fire or get helpand evacuate).

Most fire extinguisher operate using the following P.A.S.S. technique:

    1.  PULL  – Pull the pin. This will also break the tamper seal.

    2.  AIM  – Aim low, pointing the extinguisher nozzle (or its horn or hose) at the base

    of the fire.

    3.  SQUEEZE  – Squeeze the handle to release the extinguisher agent.

    4.  SWEEP  – Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out.

Watch the area. If the fire re-ignites, repeat steps 2 – 4.

If you have the slightest doubt about your ability to fight a fire – EVACUATE

    IMMEDIATELY!

    BOMB THREATS

If you receive a bomb threat via telephone:

    a)  Remain Calm.

    b)  Listen carefully. Be polite and show interest. Try to keep the caller talking so thatyou can gather more information about the device, the validity of the threat, or

the identity of the caller. Listen carefully for background noises.

    c)  Note the phone number of the caller if your telephone has a display.

    d)  Gather as much information as possible.

    e)  Upon completion of the call, immediately call Campus Security Head and provide

    as much details as possible.

    f)  Remain available to answer questions.

    g)  If the threat was received by another individual and he/she is relaying information

    to you.

    h)  Dial 019 335 8123 immediately to notify KDU 24 Hours Hotline Number.

If you discover a suspicious object:

A suspicious object is defined as any package, parcel, container, or any object that

    Fire/Police personnel.

    h)  Do not attempt to evacuate the building without the authorisation or assistance of

emergency personnel. Current emergency management guidelines caution against

automatic evacuation. In most cases, people are likely to be more secure in theiroffices, laboratories, or classrooms than in hallways that have not been searched

or outdoors where an actual threat may be even more likely to exist.

If a search of the building is conducted, you and other staff may be asked to

accompany the Police, (since you are more likely to notice something which is out of

    KITCHEN SAFETY

There are three basic rules to remember when a student works in the kitchen. Be onthe lookout for potential hazards. They are always present. Use safe work procedures(KDU Kitchen rules and regulation) . Accidents can be prevented by doing things the

right way and not taking short cuts. Use protective equipment when needed. This willalso help to prevent accidents.

    a)  Hygiene and Personal Protective Equipment Always wash your hands before beginning work in the kitchen. Keep nails clean toprevent the spread of germs. Remove any jewelry that might get in the way andtie back hair. Never wear dangling sleeves that may get caught in appliances orcatch fire.

    b)  Lifting and Carrying

Use the proper lifting techniques when lifting and carrying heavy loads in thekitchen. Clear the path you intend to take. When lifting, bend the knees and usethe legs to lift. Be careful when carrying liquids, especially hot ones. Never liftbeyond your own lifting capacity.

    c)  KnivesKnives are one of the most useful tools in the kitchen, but also one of the mostdangerous. Always cut away from the body on a proper cutting surface. Keep theblade sharp and clean. Keep the knife grips clean. Never leave knives lying in wateras it can injure an unsuspecting dishwasher. If a knife should fall, do not try tocatch it. Pick it up after it has fallen.

    d)  Slip, Trip and Fall Always clean up messes and spills to prevent falls. Close cabinet doors and drawerswhen done. Use a sturdy step ladder to reach for things. Do not step on objectsthat are unstable. Anti-slip footwear should be worn and always ensure that thefloor is not slippery with oil that can cause a slip and fall hazard.

    e)  StovesStoves can be a source of many accidents in the kitchen. Always make sure thepilot lights are working on gas stoves. If they don’t, turn the dials to off and wait

for the gas to disperse before relighting. Never leave pan handles over burners.Keep hot dishes and crockery out of reach of others to avoid burns. The care andsafety of gas pipe (kitchen) is under Juru Gas.

    f)  FireKitchen fires can be serious. They often involve igniting combustibles and flare-upsof things being cooked. Defects in ovens, burners, electrical and gas connectionsare also hazardous.

Keep flammable materials away from range or stove. If the stove is near a window,

use short, flame-resistant curtains. Do not put napkins, towels or paper containers

on the range. Check that all burners and oven are off when finished and beforegoing out or retiring.

When a fire occurs, assess the situation. Always give yourself a place to escape. Ifit is possible to safely turn off the electricity or gas feeding the fire, do so. If a pan

is on fire, shut off the heat and tightly cover the fire with a lid. This should be doneonly if the fire is small. Never pour water on a pan fire involving grease, or try tocarry it to the sink or outdoors.

Fire blanket, fire extinguisher or baking soda can also be used to put out the fire.

    MANUAL HANDLING AND WEIGHT LIFTING

Poor lifting techniques can lead to permanent back sprains and strains. If possible, manual handling should be avoided. Where this is not possible, a self-assessment ofthe risk of injury should be done which allows practical measures to be identified toreduce the risks.

Inform your supervisor of any medical condition which may affect your ability to carryout manual handling and lifting tasks safely.

    Make full and proper use of equipment/systems of work provided to assist in manualhandling and lifting activities and report any defects in such equipment. If manuallifting is to be carried out, following these simple rules should reduce the risk of harmfrom lifting and carrying any goods;

    •  Stop and think•  Use personal protective equipment as necessary, e.g. gloves, back support.•  Stand as close to the load as possible – create a stable base;•  Bend your knees and keep your back in a natural line;•  Grip the load firmly;•  Raise your head as you start to lift;•  Lift with your legs, not your back;•  Keep close to the load, heaviest side of the load next to your body.•  Maintain the same controls when lowering and releasing the load.

    Correct Lifting method

If necessary, get help and use two or more people to lift heavy objects.

Follow these guidelines when you move things:

    •  Do not work above the maximum height you can reach;•  If you need to lift something which is above head height use a working platform –

do not climb on other objects;•   Ask somebody to help if necessary.

If you are unsure how to move something, or the load is difficult to handle, then useteam lifting or ask your supervisor for advice or help.

    When using team lifting:

    •  Work with someone of similar build and height, if possible;

    •  Choose one person to call the signals;

    •  Lift from the hips at the same time, then raise the load to the desired level;

    •  Move smoothly and in unison.

    WORKING AT HEIGHT

Falls from height are responsible for many serious and fatal injuries every year. If aperson falls from a height above three metres the likelihood is that they will sustainserious injury. Many work activities involve working at height. Working from ladders, scaffolds and platforms are obvious examples, but there are many more activitieswhere people are required to work at height.

The main hazards associated with working at height are people falling and objectsfalling onto people below. These may occur as a result of inadequate edge protection,or from objects in storage being poorly secured.

    1.  Using of ladders

    a)  General Ladder

    •  Never use a defective ladder.•   All ladders must have a rubber stopper at the foot of the ladder to prevent

    them from slipping.

    •  Place a ladder in such a way that the horizontal distance is about ¼ of the

ladder length between supports. (As shown in the figure).

    •  Do not use a ladder in a horizontal position as runaways or as scaffolds.

Single and extension ladders are designed for use in a nearly vertical

position and cannot be safely used in a horizontal position.

    •  Never place a ladder in front of a door that opens toward the ladder unless

the door is locked, blocked or guarded.•  Do not place a ladder against a windowpane or sash (frame). Never lean

it against unsafe backing such as loose boxes or barrels.

    •  Place a portable ladder so that both side rails have secure footing. Do not

place the ladder feet on movable objects and make sure to provide solid

footing when placing a ladder on soft ground.

    •  When using a ladder for access to high places, securely lash or otherwise

fasten the ladder to prevent it from slipping.

    •  Do not place a ladder close to live electrical wiring or against any

operational piping (acid, chemical, sprinkler system, etc.) where damagemay be caused.

    •  On ascending or descending ladders, hold on with both hands. If material

must be handled, raise or lower it with a rope either before going down or

after climbing to the desired level.

    •  Be sure that your shoes are not greasy, muddy or slippery before you

    climb.

    •  Do not climb higher than the third rung from the top on straight or

extension ladders or the second tread from the top on stepladders.

    •  While using a stepladder, be sure it is fully open and the divider lockedbefore you start to climb it.

    25

    b)  A Frame Ladder

Before positioning the ladder, check if the surface is even. Do not place aladder on top of another object.

Make sure to adjust the footpads in a way that the ladder will have aneven contact with the ground.

It is very important that you wear the proper footwear when climbing A-frame ladders. The ladder's rungs can become too wet or oily during longerperiod of time.

Before starting to climb on the ladder, make sure that there are no cracksor dentures. These minor details may lead to a tragic fall or accident.

Make sure that the brace of the ladder is locked in place. Uneasy ladderscan cause a fall, which could result to serious injuries or even death.

Choose A-frame ladders that can carry a workload of 300 lbs. maximum.

The ladder will be able to support employee and his equipment in a stablemanner.

Check if the ladder has all applicable “Certification” compliance standards. If it does not have any safety labels, employee’s safety will be at risk.

Check what material the ladder is made of? Ladders can be made fromaluminum or fiberglass. Choose a ladder that can best serve what it will beused for.

For easy storage and safekeeping, aluminum A-frame ladders are the bestchoice. Folding A-frame ladders are available, making it more portable andconvenient to carry. Never stand on the top step of your A-frame ladders. This can cause the ladder to wobble and become unstable.

Make sure that anything that employees carry are not stuck with the rungsof the ladder. If employees are going to use a ladder to install lighting, stacking material or any work at height, an A-frame ladder can work wellwith you. Employee’s safety in using A -frame ladders does not just rely onthe product features but greatly depends on how they use it.

Never build your own ladder (wooden or steel ladders), it is a violation oflaw.

    PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS

These are some basic precautions that everyone should follow for crime preventionand personal safety awareness.

These precautions include:  Walk with a friend as much as possible. At night, wait for buses with other people.

If in doubt, call for a taxicab. Never hitchhike or get away and help from someoneof authority.

If you are driving, never give a ride to a stranger. Park your car in well lightedparking structures or on streets where there are many people. Lock your car anduse an alarm system. If you feel uneasy, particularly at night, ask someone towalk with you to your car before you open it.

Look at the map or GPS and decide on your directions before you start walkingin an unfamiliar city. If you need directions, ask someone in a store or restaurant.

Avoid asking strangers on the street for directions.  To bring only sufficient money that you need.

If you are sick and cannot come to class, ask a friend or staff to inform yourlecturers. If you are taking a trip, let your roommate or friend know where youare going. If you will be gone for more than two days, call your parents and tellthem where they can reach you.

Avoid using outdoor ATM machines, particularly at night.

Keep your apartment or room door locked at all times, and do not give anyoneyour key. Ask for identification if someone says they need to enter your room, and then tell them to come back later if you are alone. Do not let anyone stay

overnight in your apartment unless they are a close friend or relative.   Avoid arguments with strangers. If you feel someone is verbally or physically

abusing you, get away and ask someone of authority.

Enjoy group activities with your friends but if you think something the groupwants to do is wrong, don’t be afraid to say no. If you feel uneasy, tell yourfriends you have to go home.

Stand behind rails while waiting for bus/taxi – prevent snatch theft etc. Alwayswalk facing oncoming traffic. A snatch thief will usually come from behind youwhen you are not looking. If you notice someone suspicious following/ stalkingor approaching you, just scream.

Hold on to rails while walking down stairs. Do not run in the campus compound duringwet weather.

Dress for safety – no slippers, preference is for toes to be covered  No sitting on or stay away from railings or barricades at stairs in the campus  Do not walk while texting  Drive slowly while entering the campus’ main gate and follow the guard’s

    instruction.

Watch out for and report trip hazards e.g. lose or creased carpet.  Be careful when holding hot drinks and walking etc.  No smoking at places near gas tanks/volatile solvents e.g. kitchen/lab.
