Some of the best shopping, doesn’t have tobe new. Destinations such as flea markets, online auctions, even your basement or atticcan yield treasures that need just a little workto bring to life. Here, I found an old outdated piece through a twitter friend. After some sanding, painting and new hardware, here is theend product...

INGREDIANTS:1 quart of water-based semi-gloss paint Foam brushPaint brushWood fillerDrillKnobs100 grit sandpaper220 grit sandpaperwater-based primer

INSTRUCTIONS:The key in this project, is making sure the piece you buy/find is in decent physical shape; meaning there are no major structural problems, drawers function etc. You’ll need to take out the drawers and remove the old hardware, then thoroughly clean the whole piece. With wood puddy, patch the holes and wait until hardened.Using 100 grit sandpaper, (either by hand or with an electric sander) sand all surfaces to be painted. You won’t need to go down to bare wood; the point of this is to rough up the surface so the primer will have something to attach to.Using the primer and foam brush, paint on one coat, let dry, then sand with 220 grit sandpaper.Wipe clean, then apply the first topcoat with a good brush. When dry, apply a second coat.Determine the center of the drawers, mark with a pencil then drill a hole slightly larger than the screw diameter of the new knob.Attach the knobs.

Here is the subject piece: an old pine 4 drawer nightstand. There is an existing clear finish on it that we will need to rough up, in preparationfor the primer. We also need to fill the old drawer pull holes with wood filler, as the new pull will just be a single hole. If you want to re-use the holes, measure the distance from the center of hole to center of hole. That is your ‘spread’. You will need this measurment when choosing pulls with the same hole spread.

Paint with long even strokes, and be super careful ofdrips. As soon as you are done with one coat, inspect the whole piece for possible offenders. Bewary of bugs landing in your paint job as well!
