WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome Dirt Karters, It is with great pleasure that I am able to welcome all drivers, officials, volunteers, family and friends as well as our valued sponsors to the 2014 Ken and Ces Ditchfield Memorial Open. I would also like to make a special welcome to the Ditchfield family as well as acknowledge the club’s life members that have been able to make it down today. Welcome to everyone, we hope you enjoy the weekend. The Ken and Ces Open is a time honoured event that this year has undergone a massive revamp. The Dirt Trackers Kart Club established a separate committee for the organizing and running of this meeting. The committee has been headed by long time karter Colin Youd and included Ken Ditchfield Jnr and his daughter Kylie with the main focus on providing a race meeting that gave the drivers plenty of racing as well as an opportunity to “Celebrate Dirt Karting in WA”. I would encourage you to read the section in the program about the Ditchfield family to gain an understanding of the massive contribution they have made and continue to make to our sport. As part of the changes to this year’s event we have introduced a new racing format unlike any other format in Australian Dirt Karting. Starting with hot laps and qualifying, then moving through three rounds of heats and then the random draw top 8 Dash for each class all culminating in 12 lap deadman finals!!! We ask that competitors be patient with the new format as it will be tweaked in coming years to make this event bigger and better. In addition to the racing format, the K&C committee has managed to secure over $10,000 in prizes and give-aways. One lucky driver will win from a raffle draw a brand new KT100S motor valued at over $1,000 just for turning up!!!!! Prize winners must be at the presentations on Sunday afternoon in person. Thank you to our tireless officials and volunteers. Please remember these guys are giving up their time so the rest of us can be here. From the stewards, to our wonderful canteen staff and the gals in the lap scoring tower we couldn’t be doing what we love if it wasn’t for you guys, so thank you once again. If you competitors get a chance please pass on your appreciation also, a small thank you goes a long way. We cannot run a race meeting like this without a generous bunch of sponsors. Thank you to all the sponsors and we hope you enjoy the weekend. There are some sponsors out there who are more than willing put their hand up numerous times throughout the year, not only at this club but across WA karting. It does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Thank you and if the opportunity arises please support our sponsors. Thanks to the competitors for getting involved and supporting this new initiative. We hope you enjoy the meeting and work with us to build this event bigger and better each year. Karting is definitely a family sport and many of the drivers wouldn’t be here if not for their husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, mums, dads, uncles, aunties, brothers and sisters (as well as longtime family friends), so please take the time this weekend to enjoy the company of your family and friends as this is what Dirt Karting and the Ditchfield Foundation is all about. We are hoping to have racing finished early on Sunday afternoon to encourage competitors and supporters to stay back for the presentations and help us celebrate Dirt Karting in WA. We would love to see as many people as possible stay back and enjoy the afternoon to congratulate the winners and indulge in a BBQ and a drink or two. Again on behalf of the DTKC committee, Welcome, Enjoy, Celebrate.

HISTORY OF KEN & CES DITCHFIELD

Ken & Ces Ditchfield first became involved in karting in the mid 1950’s when Ken Jnr wanted to go racing after watching his dad own and race a Zephyr powered speedcar at the infamous Claremont Speedway (something Ken Jnr went on to do later). Ken Snr built the first go kart Ken Jnr raced whilst owning BP Belmont Park. Back then the starting age for juniors was 14. The first kart they purchased for Ken Jnr was an Avon Frame with 200cc Villiers. They took Ken Jnr to race at Belmont (where the Burswood Golf course is now located) and at Clontarf (Manning Rd). Both tracks were run by the Hurricane Go Kart Club (which still exists today, running under the AKA). The Ditchfield Family always went karting as a family and were actively involved in the Hurricane Go Kart Club. Ken Snr became president of the Hurricane Go Kart Club, and unfortunately during his presidential term the Hurricane Go Kart Club was forced to relocate due to development. The club relocated to Wundowie, where it is still today. After years of watching Ken Jnr have all the fun, Ken Snr and Ces started racing in the late 1960’s. Ken Snr raced number 8 in the 125 Super Class with McCulloch engines, and later completed in the 200cc Super with 91B/1 McCulloch Engines on a Lancer Chassis. During Ken Snr’s time karting, he won and placed in numerous state titles, and club championships. Ken Snr’s Lancer with the 91B/1 McCulloch engines has been beautifully restored by Colin Youd, and is still used today in Vintage Kart Meetings run under AKA. Colin Youd took the Lancer kart to the 2014 Australian Vintage Grand Prix held last month in Ipswich QLd, where he became the Era 1/Era 2 Champion. Ces raced number 6 in the Ladies Class choosing to use Mac 10 McCulloch Engines initially. She also ran a Corsair 1080 rotary valve engine. She used a couple of different chassis including Lancer, Dragon and HKS. Like her husband, Ces also won and placed in numerous state titles and club championships. But as everyone knows behind every good man is an even better woman. Ces was well known as a hard working for karting in Western Australia. She was the secretary of the Hurricane Kart Club, the inaugural secretary for the Dirt Trackers Kart Club and was the secretary and treasurer for the WAKA (Western Australian Karting Association). Through Ken Snr’s friendship with Aub Lawson, Mike Tilbury, and George Milburn he became the track curator at Claremont Speedway, a job he did until his retirement in the mid 90’s. Ken Jnr then took over from his father. Ken Snr was involved in the initial set up of the Perth Motorplex and also worked on many WA speedways including Wattle Grove, and Bibra Lake. Ken Snr also received the John Day award (an award he treasured) and was inducted into the Speedway Hall of Fame in 2002.

Page 4: Ken & Ces Memorial 2014

Dirt Trackers Kart Club (DTKC) was formed after an advert was placed in the West Australian Newspaper and the inaugural meeting was called. The track was pegged out and constructed within four weeks of the initial meeting at Ken & Ces’s gravel pit at 26 Mile Peg Rd, Gidgegannup. The club ran at Gidgegannup for approximately two seasons, and then Ken Snr, had the foresight to move the Dirt Trackers Kart Club to the infamous Kewdale site, which hosted several national titles. In the early years of DTKC being located to Kewdale it became the largest Western Australian club under the AKA. But unfortunately due to industrial development the Dirt Trackers Kart Club moved to its current location at Boomerang Rd, Oldbury, where it has run for more than 23 years. During the relocation to Boomerang Rd, both Ken Ditchfield Snr and Jnr played a vital role in the building of facilities and the track along with DTKC Life Member Barry Pages. Ken Snr supplied the machinery and carted in the materials for the track which was supplied by the local water board. Ken & Ces travelled to Hong Kong numerous times with the Australian Karting Team, lead by Howard Health, Robbie Hunter, Mike Sully and John Pazzario to provide assistance and support. These drivers really put Australian Karting onto the international karting map. In addition to being life members at Dirt Trackers Kart Club, both Ken & Ces Ditchfield are life members of the Hurricane Kart Club and WAKA (Western Australian Karting Association). An honour bestowed upon them for services to karting.

RACING FORMAT

Hot Laps A 2 lap session for each class to get familiar with the track and make sure

your kart is "on song"

Qualifying A 3 lap session in the clockwise direction in groups of 5. Drivers will draw a "marble" and this will determine which group you will qualify in. POINTS ARE AWARDED FOR QUALIFYING THE SAME AS A HEAT RACE - IE FASTEST GETS 20 POINTS, 2ND GETS 17 ETC.

Heat 1 - Quickest Time to the Front Quickest time from qualifying starts P1, 2nd quickest starts P2 etc through

to slowest starting from P20.

Heat 2 - Reverse of Qualifying Reverse of the STARTING grid from heat 1. That is, the fastest qualifier

starts last, 2nd fastest qualifier starts 2nd last through to the slowest qualifier starting on pole. Your finishing position from Heat 1 does NOT affect where you start in Heat 2.

Heat 3 - Highest Points to the Front Highest accumulated points starts from P1, 2nd highest accumulated points

from P2 through to lowest points scorer starting from last position.

Top 8 Dash The top 8 point scorers draw a random number which determines their starting position for the Top 8 Dash. The finishing order from the dash sets the grid positions for the top 8 starting positions in the final. Positions 9 through to 20 - these qualifiers go straight into the final, starting wherever they have finished on points after time trials and the heats.

Deadman Final The final will be 12 laps using the deadman format. This means "1st past the post wins" - the points from time trials and the heats simply get you to the final - where you finish in the final is where you finish for the meeting. All 20 karts will take part in the final (providing you haven't been disqualified from the meeting)
