It All Adds UpIn sports, the outcome of many contests is decided byinches, whether it be a putt that lips out of the cup or afield goal that bounces off the crossbar.

In trucking, outcomes are decided by points — percentagepoints — used to determine your productivity and fuel effi-ciency. And in 2007, these points will come under greaterscrutiny than ever, but with an exciting series of new productinnovations, Kenworth is prepared to help put those pointsin your favor.

For example, customers can expect new levels of value withthe new PACCAR PX-6 and PX-8 engines, which will beinstalled in Kenworth’s conventional Class 6 and 7 vehicles inJanuary, 2007. Further versatility in the medium duty market isoffered by the new Kenworth T300 Class 6 model for non-CDL-holding drivers.

At Kenworth, we’re committed to providing vehiclesthat maximize performance and value – both tangibleand intangible. The new Kenworth T660 deliversoptimum fuel efficiency in a stylish aerodynamicdesign equipped with advanced technology like thestandard GPS navigation system, superior forwardlighting and on-board diagnostics, to name a few(page 4).

Further measurable enhancements to the Kenworth prod-uct line include the Kenworth Clean Power System™,which reduces idle time fuel consumption and canimprove fuel efficiency by as much as 8% (page 22). Wealso continue to make significant progress in preparingour trucks to incorporate 2007 EPA emission-compliantengines. In conjunction with this effort, Kenworth hasalso developed new, high-performance cooling systemsthat will meet the challenges presented by the new emis-sions standards.

Trucking professionals recognize that the differencebetween profit and loss can be a matter of a few points.Decisions about which trucks to spec, which dealer to

use and how to measure tangi-bles and intangibles are moreimportant today than ever. In theend, it all adds up.

Knelsen Rock Products

Big PayloadAs a manager of Knelsen Rock Products in Grande Prairie,Alberta, Ed Krahn is at the epicenter of a proverbial storm.Krahn and his crew deliver aggregate, concrete and asphaltto construction sites in the area, a hyperactive marketfueled by a surge in oil and gas production.

“Our county had $60 million ($C) worth of build-ing permit applicationsthree years ago,” Krahnsays. “That number jumpedto nearly $600 million ($C) in 2006.”

To help keep up with the hectic construction market, Krahnordered a small fleet of Keworth T300s: some fitted withdump boxes, others with “slinger” systems, one with a fifthwheel to pull an asphalt trailer.

“The T300 is an awesome little truck,” Krahn says. “Itseems bulletproof and has a very tight turning circle, whichis really important when our guys are delivering to jobsites. The cabs are quiet and there’s plenty visibility all around.”

All but one of Krahn’s newtrucks — the tandem tractor —

are spec’ed with six-speedAllison World transmis-

sions.

“I’d driven a small medium-duty truck with an automaticabout 30 years ago, and the memory of that sluggish dogwas still with me when I went to test-drive a T300 with anAllison at our dealership, GreatWest Kenworth inClairmont, Alberta. But I soon realized there was a hugedifference between what I remembered and what I wasexperiencing. Within the first few miles of the test, I knewI’d be buying the Kenworth T300, and otherslike it.”

Krahn says automatic transmissions offer two big advan-tages in his operation: less equipment damage and lesstraining. “If I don’t need to teach new hires how to shift atruck, it really speeds the training process.”

The company operates 13 Kenworth trucks — 11 T300sand two T800s. Krahn says he expects to add moreKenworth T300s as needed.

“Some of our people were accustomed to driving muchbigger trucks before they started here,” he says. “They werea bit hesitant at first to drive smaller ones. That sentimentusually lasts about a day. They quickly realize how easy andfun it is to drive a Kenworth T300 — it’s really like getting ina big pickup. I appreciate the truck for another reason, though. We can haul nearly 15 metric tons of material onone of these. That’s one wicked payload.”

Daufeldt Transport

Lessons LearnedAt Daufeldt Transport in Muscatine, Iowa, Kenworth isn’tjust a great brand of trucks. It’s a family tradition.

Company founder Harvey Daufeldt bought two newKenworth W900A day cab models in 1970, and graduallythe nameplate came to dominate the fleet. Today, familiarKW emblems adorn 25 of the tank carrier’s Class 8 trucks.

“My dad was looking for better built, more reliable equip-ment,” says Harvey’s son, Jeff, who purchased the businessin 1992. “He also wanted something that he could really beproud of.”

Durability and resale valueDuring his 14 years ofmanaging the operation,Jeff Daufeldt has come toappreciate the advantageof owning trucks that com-mand higher resale values. “Kenworth trucks might costa little more than some competitors’ products, but youalways get your money back when you trade or sell,” hesays. Not that he often trades, preferring instead to runhis units for eight to 10 years before selling them out-right or through an auction service. He kept one truck —a 1979 Kenworth W900 glider kit — for 17 years, thensold it to a friend who fitted it with a wrecker box andcontinues to use it today.

“We’re not a high-mileage operation,” he says. “Our trucksrun 60,000 to 70,000 miles a year, locally, and those onregional routes get about 80,000 to 90,000 miles. Becausewe add more than $5,000 worth of options — PTO systems, full fenders and things — to nearly every new truck coming inthe door, we try to get as much use out of them as possible.”

The company specializes in on-time deliveries of petroleumand liquid chemicals. Each tractor and trailer is subjected tothorough and frequent inspections, and an aggressive pre-ventative maintenance program. Oil changes occur at15,000 miles, grease jobs at 2,500 miles.

“It’s been a long time since we had any serious trouble onthe road,” Daufeldt says. “We try our best tokeep everything rolling smoothly.”

Like a lot of former drivers in managerial or ownershippositions, Daufeldt still likes to get behind the wheel. Whenthe opportunity arises, he slips into his personal KenworthT600 — a glittering black 1996 model — and goes whereverthe dispatcher sends him. “It’s a great way for me to getout of the office and clear my mind,” he says.

Daufeldt’s two sons, Adam and Patrick, joined the com-pany in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Unsurprisingly, theyare enthusiastic Kenworth fans, too, particularly when itcomes to the T800.

“The turning radius, view from the driver’s seat, overallappearance and durability of the Kenworth T800 makeit the ideal truck for our operation,” says Patrick.

Daufelt Transport runs 22 T800 units, all fitted withsmall block Cat or Cummins engines rated at about400 hp. Nearly half of the company’s trucks are daycab models. The others are spec’d with sleepers rang-ing in size from 38 to 60 inches. Weight reduction isthe driving factor behind every component spec.

Daufeldt says he plans to continue growing his fleet ashe always has: one or two trucks at a time, as needed,to keep up with customer demand. As he pursues thisstrategy, there will likely be more KW emblems on dis-play at the Daufeldt terminal.

Petroleum and liquid chemical transporter builds reputation for dependability with Kenworth W900s

Daufeldt appreciates the advantage of owningtrucks that command higher resale values.

Karl’s Transport

Karl’s KenworthsWhen his father’s Wisconsin cheese plant closed in 1986,Karl Schulz inherited six aging tractors and some refrigerat-ed trailers. Karl’s Transport soon began hauling producearound the Upper Midwest.

That’s when the reality of running a trucking company set in.Drivers soon started calling in the middle of the night, bro-ken down on the side of the road. Schulz realized that theold trucks wouldn’t sustain him long in the trucking busi-ness. So by the late 1980s, he purchased his first Kenworths, and he has been buying only Kenworths ever since.

“They’re extremely reliable,” says Schulz. “Kenworth trucksare put together really well.”

Reliability, resale value and ease of maintenanceBy building a reputation for reliability, Karl’s Transport hasgrown to $14 million in annual revenues and now covers48 states. With a modern fleet of 70 trucks — mostlyKenworth T2000s, with some T600s and W900s — thecompany continuously upgrades its fleet, purchasing 28new Kenworths last year, and 33 on order this year.

“We trade about every five years,” Schulz says. “Because wetake excellent care of our equipment, we get top dollar.People want Kenworths and know that trucks comingfrom our lot will last. My drivers come back andtell me that so-and-so who bought our truck isstill going strong at 1.2 million miles. Wetake pride in that.

“Preventative maintenance costs so lit-tle and saves so much. We greaseevery 10,000 miles and change oilevery 20,000 miles. We take ourtime and go through our trucks, visually inspecting them, and wehead off 95 percent of roadsidebreakdowns. We don’t havethose types of problems.”

Every now and then, Karl’smechanics have to get under thehood of an owner-operator’s

truck, something other than a Kenworth. “That reminds uswhy we like Kenworths so much,” Schulz says. “When wesee how other trucks are put together, we really appreciatethe ease of maintenance with Kenworth.”

Of the 28 Kenworths the company purchased last year,Schulz says 23 were T2000s. Spec’ing his trucks for com-fort, reliability and fuel mileage, a typical order includes theCummins 475 hp engine, 10-speed overdrive, 75-inchAerodyne® sleepers, AG400 suspension, 3.55 rears, full fair-ing package and dual 100-gallon fuel tanks.

“We get good fuel mileage with the Cumminsengines, up to 7.5 mpg at the high end,”

Schulz says. “We really like the new Kenworth AG400 sus-pension because it runs so true with no vibration.

“T2000s have a nice wide body and comfortable sleepers. That’s what the drivers like most about them. And greatmaneuverability. Our trucks get into wherever they have togo. The smaller 100-gallon tanks keep the weight down forbetter fuel mileage. The T2000s are just very affordable tooperate.”

Karl Shultz“We really appreciate the ease of maintenance with Kenworth.”

Hodges Trucking Company

Bill Hodges founded his company in 1932 with two usedtrucks offered to him in lieu of unpaid wages. In themidst of the Depression, Hodges accepted the trucks andsoon started hauling supplies to drilling rigs aroundOklahoma.

The company has grown over the years into one of thenation’s premier carriers specializing in oil-field and over-dimensional transportation. Since the 1970s, HodgesTrucking Co. has been buying mostlyKenworth trucks.

Durability means everything“In my opinion, Kenworth was the most rugged truckavailable back then — still is,” says president JackHodges (Bill’s son), who has run the company since1964. “Once we started buying Kenworth trucks, a lot ofother companies around here did the same.”

Hodges’ fleet has grown to 80 trucks, all Kenworths, with29 more on order this year. The heavy work is done bymassive Kenworth C500 models, fitted with tandem frontaxles rated at 20,000 lbs. each, Sisu rear axles rated at35,000 lbs., Caterpillar C15 575 hp engines, 18-speed

Fuller transmissions and solid-mount Hendrickson suspen-sions — all bolted to triple-channel frame rails that canspan more than 400 inches.

A typical job — moving an oil rig — might involve two100-ton cranes (Hodges owns 11 of them), two “jin-pole” trucks (Kenworth C500s), two other C500s, severalforklifts and four or five slick backs (T800s). As the rig isdisassembled, Hodges employees use the cranes andKenworth C500s to load the gigantic structural piecesonto the tandems, which move the loads to alocation where the T800s take over. There,

the freight is transferred and hauled on-highway to itsdestination, which might be another transfer area. If so,Kenworth C500s are used again to cart the rig partsacross the terrain to its new drilling site.

At one time, Hodges used a truck brand where drivercomfort ranged from scant to non-existent. This hasn’tbeen a problem with his Kenworth C500 and T800models. “Our drivers prefer Kenworths over any other

brand,” Hodges says. “Today youneed to please your drivers ifyou’re going to keep them.”

Last year, Hodges sold his com-pany to Chesapeake EnergyCorp., an independent drillingcompany based in OklahomaCity. Hodges says the sale hasn’treally changed anything. He con-tinues to work in his office for thenew owners. With two sons andtwo grandsons also working forthe company, he expects thatfamily members – and Kenworthtrucks – will play a commandingrole in the Hodges Trucking Co.for a long time to come.

Farnsworth Wholesale Plumbing

Speedy DeliveriesAs vice president and general manager of the largest inde-pendent wholesale plumbing distributorship in SouthernArizona, Jack Stapley didn’t know much about KenworthT300s until Rich Buchmann from Inland Kenworthstopped in one day and introduced the product line. “Ithink we were all impressed with the vehicle’s construction— and, of course, its reputation,” Stapley says.

Stapley agreed to try one, a Kenworth T300spec’ed with a Cummins ISB 200 hp engine, five-speed Allison transmission, 5.29 differential gearing, 245-inch wheelbase, spring suspension and hydraulic brakes.Since then, he’s purchased eight more T300s just like it andis planning to eventually convert his 20-truck fleet toKenworth.

“We buy a couple of trucks every year, either to replaceolder units or add more capacity,” he says. “We’re a grow-ing company.”

That’s an understatement. Farnsworth Wholesale Plumbingwas incorporated just 12 years ago and, today, operatestwo facilities in the Phoenix area, with a third under con-struction. The company is expected to generate about $80million in revenue this year.

Satisfied customers, satisfied driversEvery workday, starting as early as 4 a.m.,the company’s trucks fan out across the

sprawling metropolitan landscape. The Kenworth T300shaul bathtubs, sinks, tubing, pallets of sealant and any-thing else local plumbing crews need. Each truck makesfour or five runs daily, hauling loads that weigh as much as16,000 pounds. Since most of the merchandise is orderedon a just-in-time basis, deliveries must reach their destina-

tions on schedule.

Gil Hatch has been piloting one of the KenworthT300s for nearly a year, running it locally and onlonger trips to Tucson and Yuma.

“The Kenworth T300’s sloped hood is really helpfulin tight traffic and on jobsites,” he says. “Andafter eight hours behind the wheel I appreci-ate the smooth ride and not getting beat upby every bump in the road.” Hatch also sayshe likes the truck’s appearance.

“While we like to operate a good lookingfleet, of course,” Stapley says, “our KenworthT300s help us to satisfy our customers’ main

concerns — getting supplies on time andat the lowest price.”

While the affordability of theKenworth T300 helps the com-

pany stay competitive in themarket, it’s the truck’s relia-bility that keeps Farnsworthcustomers happy.

Owner-Operator

Long before purchasing his new 2006 Kenworth W900model, owner-operator Shawn Cavanaugh had done themath. Averaging 100,000 miles annually, he would runhis new truck for four years, or 400,000 miles, then tradeit for another new W900. He’d spend a little extraupfront for an extended warranty — 600,000 miles onthe CAT engine — an added bonus at trade-in time.

“In trucking today, you have to work so smart, financially, as far as resale, warranty and futureshop expenses,” says Cavanaugh. “It’s importantto approach it as a business. That includes theprofitability of operating a new truck, the righttruck.”

Driving over-the-road for the past 27 years — and 2.5million accident-free miles — Cavanaugh has learned afew important lessons about being an owner-operator.First and foremost, he says, you need a reliable truck.Second, because you’re spending so much time insidethe truck, you need and deserve quality comfort. Third, when you go to sell your truck, you want to get maxi-mum return on your investment.

Reliability, comfort, resale valueSince 1990, Cavanaugh has driven reefers for CamelExpress, Millerstown, Penn., a company that operates itsown large truck fleet — mostly Kenworths.

Primarily delivering for Kraft Foods and operatingthroughout the state of New York, Cavanaugh’sKenworth W900 climbs mountains, endures congestedfreeways and squeezes through tight city streets, often onthe same day. When he finally gets home at the end ofeach week, he appreciates the ease of maintenance ofowning a new Kenworth.

“With 80,000 miles, I haven’t hadanything to do to it yet except changeoil,” he says. “It’s so easy to maintainit’s unbelieveable. And because Ispec’d the greaseless driveline, I don’teven have to grease ease joints any-more.”

To help spec his truck, Cavanaughworked with Coopersburg Kenworth

in Pennsylvania to select the CAT 550 hp engine, 18-speed Eaton transmission, 3.36 locking rears, slidingfifth wheel and 72-in. AeroCab® sleeper.

“It’s tricked out,” he says. “It’s got LED lights everywhere.I kept adding to the spec and changed things about 300times. I put every option I could think of on this truck. Ifigure when it comes time for resale, this will be a premi-um truck. After all, my primary reason forpicking Kenworth was resale value.”

Cavanaugh has been pleasantly surprised with themaneuverability of his big truck, especially when gettingin and out of New York City. “The extended axle gives mean easier turning radius, so I have no problems gettingaround in tight places like the Bronx, when I haulbananas to Hunt’s Point. I like the way the truck looksand the higher cab, the DayLite® doors, the way I sit upthere, and the visibility is good for an extended hoodmodel truck. With the new interiors, it’s so easy to cleaneverything. The LED lighting is great because the gaugesare easy to read at night. All the switches — air-condi-tioning, power mirrors — are set up so I can get at themeasily, in traffic, without thinking about it. Kenworthreally made a touchdown when it redesigned the dash-board.”

With financing from PACCAR Financial, Cavanaugh sayshe got a great rate, too, and plans to use PFC againwhen he purchases his next truck — a Kenworth W900.

Fuel Economy

The Kenworth Clean Power System™ features a battery-powered climate control system with the capability toprovide engine-off heating and cooling, plus 110v“hotel load” power to drivers for a full 10 hours.

The Kenworth Clean Power System is an exciting devel-opment and departure from other truck OEM solu-tions. Idle reduction is a critical issue for the industry, and the solutions offered to date do not meet the true

needs of the industry in terms of cost, approach or length of operation. Manyengine-off heating solutions last only fourto six hours, which is not adequate formany operations.

Kenworth will optimize engine-off perfor-mance to 10 hours, so that the system'spayback can be measured in months, notyears. The Kenworth Clean Power Systemoffers the potential for as much as an 8%improvement in overall fuel economy byeliminating the one gallon of fuel typicallyburned per idle hour.

The available savings is significant and issure to figure into the calculations ofthose fleets and owner-operators interest-ed in ordering fuel efficient, aerodynamictrucks to help offset some of the anticipat-ed costs of the new 2007 engines enteringinto next year.

Cooling and electric capacity is generatedand stored as the truck is driven down theroad, or when the truck is connected toshore power. Once the truck is shut off,the battery-powered cooling system takesover and a thermostat regulates the dri-ver’s desired sleeper temperature. A dial-controlled fan circulates chilled airthrough a duct located near the bunk.

Extensive testing has shown that theKenworth Clean Power System is able tokeep the sleeper cool for 10 hours, evenwith outside ambient temperatures of upto 95 degrees.

Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI) plans to spec the KenworthClean Power™ System on future truck orders. “TheKenworth Clean Power System will likely become a stan-dard spec for our company’s trucks,” says Bruce Stockton, vice president of maintenance for CFI, which has a fleet ofmore than 2,100 company-owned tractors.

“With diesel fuel at $3 per gallon, we expect the KenworthClean Power System to significantly reduce our fuel coststhrough reduced idling,” saysStockton. “Not only does it appearthat the system will be cost effectivefrom an economic standpoint, we areconfident that our drivers will love it.For us, the Kenworth Clean PowerSystem makes complete businesssense.”

Stockton projects CFI’s idle timeshould be no more than 20% of totalengine hours once the fleet is fullyconverted. He says even if diesel fuelcosts were $1.50 per gallon, federaland state anti-idling regulations andthe need to provide for driver comfortare also driving the company’s deci-sion. “Our industry has a responsibili-ty to help clean up the air and reduceour dependence on foreign oil,” hesays. “It’s why we became a memberof the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay programearly on — we want to be a part of thesolution, not part of the problem.

“What we really like is that theKenworth system is capable of runninga full 10 hours without recharging. That’s long enough for a driver’s off-duty cycle.”

Stockton says CFI also prefers to spectheir trucks with OEM-installed sys-tems like the Kenworth Clean PowerSystem because they’re easier toschedule for routine maintenance andbecause they’re more durable and reli-able.

Kenworth has produced an electronic “White Paper on FuelEconomy” to assist fleets and owner-operators interestedin exploring ways to enhance fuel economy.
