Special to the Courier The Friends of the Kern River Preserve will hold another free monthly family nature exploration on Saturday, February 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. Birds are one of the most fascinating groups in the animal kingdom, magical jewels that fill our yards with movement and color. Come learn how to identify the dozens of species of birds in Kern River Valley backyards from Alison Sheehey, Outreach Director at the Audubon Kern River Preserve. This will be an interactive three-part workshop. 1. Binocular use (please bring your binoculars if you have them... we have some to borrow if you don't own a pair). Many people find it frustrating to see through binoculars. There are four sim- ple yet critical steps to make it a joyous experience. You will be taken through these steps. 2. Watching birds and seeing field marks are two different things. Many of us learn to see the whole bird and put a name on it. That works but takes a long time. Learn how to observe different parts of birds to create the whole picture and then use a field guide to find the bird. 3. After learning how to use a field guide, take a walk with an expert, learn birding etiquette and get help identifying any species seen. For those interested, after a lunch break we can visit some of the hot spots around Isabella Reservoir to see more species. Please RSVP for this part of the session. Monthly events are free and appropri- ate for ages 5 and up. All interested per- sons (children are welcome but those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult). All of the Friends of the Kern River Preserve events are held outdoors at the Audubon Kern River Preserve headquar- ters. Please dress for cold to warm weather, bring drinks, a picnic lunch, sunscreen and bug spray. Binoculars, camera and a field guide are always a good idea if you have them. "What do you hope for, and how dowe get there?" Previous questionshave been "What's on your heart?""What inspires you?" and "What areyour fears?" Thought Cards are readat each meeting so everyone getsheard, even if they are too timid orembarrassed to share out loud.

Robbie Fisher, a Kern Valley HighSchool senior, introduced the meet-ing. Included in his remarks, Fisherstated, "We don't want to feel likethat ever again."

There was a student-led skit, showing two student friends, andone becomes surrounded by depres-sion, anger, heartbreak, drugs andalcohol. The friend tries to set theother student free, and is unable. Then the friend enlists the help of hismother, counselor, pastor, coach, officer and teacher. Fisher then wenton to explain that kids talk throughtheir clothes, music, and some thingsthey do. He used a ping pong ball asan example and said that when teensdon't have anyone to talk to andstomped the ball, demonstratingwhat can happen. He said that HearUs is a place where kids can talk andignite hope.

Neal Preston introduced Duganand Jennifer Whistler, parents of oneof the students who committed sui-cide. They have attended three of thefour Hear Us events. She said whenshe heard about the first suicide, shethought about how terrible it wasand cried, and then when it hap-pened in her home she thought thatshe could never go on. She said,"This isn't the parents, siblings, friends or the community's fault."She said the students that killedthemselves, or attempted to, just for-got how much they are loved. Shesaid Hear Us showed her that "I am

strong, but I have the same feelingsand fears as our students. But I leavewith a little less fear and a little morehope. We have amazing children inour community; let them be amaz-ing."

Alyson Borthick spoke about peerpressure on teens. She said that HearUs helps us to crush the walls of sep-aration. She summed it up by saying,"Little acts of kindness will keep thehope alive. You never know howsomething so simple can changesomeone's life."

Dugan Whistler, who is also a localCalifornia Highway Patrol officer, then came back up to explain his feel-ings. One thing he noted was, "Weneed to respect fear, and learn fromfear, but not let fear define you." Hebelieves that we all need to try to dosomething nice each day, to say apositive word or offer help. It willmake you feel good and help theother person and just be an inspira-tion. He admonished that we justneed to take the time. This promptedNeal Preston to tell a story aboutbeing a 5'4" freshman 16 years agoand being rescued from the trash canby a then-senior named JasonWilliams.

A video of Kern Valley students, parents and friends was shown. Thetheme of the video was hope. Theyanswered questions like, "What doyou think about suicide?" One stu-dent summed it up: "Suicide is a per-manent solution to a temporaryproblem." Other students noted howHear Us is a place to be heard and tohear others. Dugan Whistler reflect-ed that after it happened, "We decid-ed as a family we had to let it make usbetter, we were a good family before,

PICKS OF THE WEEK"Unstoppable" (PG-13) -- If you

like movies about runaway trainsand the determined Choo-ChooBoys charged with stopping them, then Boy Howdy, have I got the per-fect film for you.

In "Unstoppable," an unmannedtrain carrying tons of deadly chemi-cals is barreling across the country-side. Engineer Denzel Washingtonand conductor Chris Pine are theonly two peoplewho can saveScranton fromgoing up inflames and beingawash in steam-ing toxic death --and never have Iwanted two peo-ple to fail more.

"Waiting forSuperman" (PG) -- In "Waiting forSuperman," Davis Guggenheim, director of "An Inconvenient Truth,"the Academy Award-winning docu-mentary on climate change, turnshis sights on America's ailing educa-tion system.

In this controversial documentary,Guggenheim suggests that one ofthe major problems with educationtoday is teachers unions, which pro-tect bad teachers all for the sake ofperpetuating tenure agreements. Healso is a proponent of the charterschool system, which hasn't beenproven to be substantially betterthan public schools. The lottery sys-tem used to pick the students isabsolutely soul-crushing to watch.

While it's clear that Guggenheimhas an agenda, "Superman" isn'tone of those Michael Moore-stylefilms that are long on propagandaand short on facts. No matter whereyou stand on the issue, this film issure to provoke thoughtful and pas-sionate discussion.

The past few days have seemedlike semi-spring, but let's not getlulled into a falseseason. Thewarmer weatherhas been benefi-cial to the crappiebite. This pastweek has beenpretty good atFrench GulchMarina, on thedocks. My goodfriend, PastorJames, and I fished the docks severaltimes this week, catching lots of real-ly nice crappie, some weighing inthe 1 pound class. The best day wasthe worst weather of the last front. With 13 crappie averaging 1 poind, these fish are ready to spawn andwere caught in 20 feet of water. Afew places that you could try fishingfrom shore would be the rock pointjust north of North Fork Marina,Piney Point. If fishing from a boat,Rocky Point, the trees betweenCamp Nine and the marina at NorthFork are good places to start look-ing.

Everyone I had contact witharound the lake over the weekendthat were fishing all had at least afew trout on their stringers. Thisincluded all the usual places --Boulder Gulch, Auxiliary Dam, B.S.

Beach, Paradise Cove, Red's Marina,Main Launch. My best tip would beto look for those fishing on sandybeaches, or where there are severalpeople fishing in a particular area.

This time of year, the weather pat-terns change every few days. Themost effective way to keep catchingfish is to fish as often as possible andkeep in mind that all fish do not feedat the same time, so there is alwayssomeone hungry.

Weather conditions have sub-dued most bass fishermen this pastweek. Those who braved the winter-like conditions reported little or noaction on the largemouths. Theoverall consensus seems to be that ifyou want to catch fish, trout fishingfrom shore is your best bet. Aftertalking to the warden, and most ofus know who I'm referring to, youwould be best advised to obey allFish & Game laws.

Here is some very good news foryou Derby hopefuls. The trout thatare being raised for the Derby inApril are much larger this year. If allthings go right, they should be in the1 pound or better class by the mid-dle of April. A final note -- thanks toall who sponsor the Derby.

Letters to the CourierDear Kern River Courier,

Your reporting on the (bike) park of recent (Courier, Jan. 28) is exceedinglyflawed. It is obvious that due diligence to get the facts have not come into playhere. In fact, before you lie about the ABA verses NBL thing, you might want toget the facts straightened out. I’m sure ABA would take serious issue with youreporting without at least asking them if any of that rubbish were true. You arebasing your reporting on a bias that leans towards Chris Brayman and the CRF.You are obviously taking what they are feeding you as fact without doing yourhomework. This is not true reporting and is quite sad. I just hope the ABA doesnot hold you liable.

By the way, I have a contract in my possession that was signed by ChrisBrayman and Jill Sloan (as chamber president) with the ABA that supersedes anyother contracts (dated 4-1-10 which was also prior to the CRF coming on board).I that contract they made it clear that there were mountain bike skills courses andpump tracks. Guess what? ABA was fine with that and the contract was except-ed and signed on 4-10-2010 by the ABA CEO. But then, you didn’t ask anyone forfacts regarding ABA did you?

Also, it is not 99.00, it is 130.00 for NBL!Also, it is not free, it is typically 5-6 for practicing and 5-6 for races (to pay for

awards) with NBL.If you do a proper comparison of 9 weeks of racing it would like this – ABA

45.00 for membership and 9 x $10.00 a race is 90 bucks = $135.00NBL is 130.00 for membership and 9 x $6.00 a race is 54 bucks = $184.00OH wait a minute, you didn’t do any fact checking!

Dear Kern River Courier,

I would like to publicly give a deep, heartfelt thank you to Bob Burkhart and allof his kitchen crew, as well as the many volunteers connected to the PregnancyResource Center (PRC) of The Kern River Valley for all the cheerfully given workthey put into our spaghetti dinner fund-raiser on Saturday, January 22 at theSenior Center in Lake Isabella. We began serving meals at 4 p.m., and by the closeof the evening at 7 p.m. we had served over 120 dinners. Throughout the eveningnames were drawn for door prizes of goodies prepared by our volunteer, PatEdwards, and at the end of the evening names were drawn for nine raffle prizes. Those in attendance had a wonderful time of good food and fellowship, and therewas a lot of laughter and visiting the entire evening. Once our final bills are paid,we will have cleared more than $1,000.00; this will go a long way in helping us toobtain supplies for the center, which in turn will enable us to help those in our com-munity who find themselves in situations that may involve an unplanned pregnan-cy. It will help us obtain equipment for training others to be volunteer peer coun-selors. It will help us to plan and present classes on parenting, abstinence, andpost-abortion Bible studies. It will help us to be that safe place for someone to gowhen they simply need a loving and attentive ear to listen as they sort through theirfeelings and figure out how they should proceed with their life.

So to the kitchen crew and all other volunteers: thank you: it was a job very welldone! We are proud to be associated with you, and couldn't have done the fund-raiser without you. To those who attended or gave a donation: Thank you for sup-porting the Pregnancy Resource Center, as together we can make a difference inthe lives of many.

If you are interested in learning more about the PRC, please call the Center at379-8893 and leave a message…we will return your call! If you'd like to receive ourmonthly newsletter, email me at [email protected], and I will add your email toour list. If you don't have email, call me with your mailing address, and we'll behappy to send it to you each month.

Myrtle PierceExecutive Director, PRC

Noah Daniel NobleSept. 11, 1982 - Jan. 26, 2011

Our wonderful son, friend, brother, grandson, mate, belayer andbeautiful human passed from this earth on Jan. 26, 2011. Noah, always sure on his feet on snowboards or mountaintops, slipped onsome stairs, lost consciousness and died immediately.

Noah was born in Bakersfield, son of Lee Noble and ElizabethSzymanski. Noah lived in Wofford Heights for most of his boyhood.

He enjoyed working in Grandma Lucia’sback yard and eating fresh peaches.

Noah and his mom moved to Coloradowhere Noah graduated from Sand CreekHigh School and then went on to college atColorado State University, Fort Collins, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree innatural resources. Through selected intern-ships, he solidified his career decision tocarefully manage earth’s resources. Noah’sability to communicate as well as his pas-sion and commitment would have made him

a vital force in that chosen career. Noah lived life as an adventurer on all fronts. He took wonderful

journeys to Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Cambodia.Everywhere Noah went he turned strangers into friends. Soenthralled in travel, surely in the land of endless smiles, his was oneof the brightest. Noah also rode his bike through Vietnam, tackling asmany as 120 kilometers a day, loaded with all his gear. He journeyedover a thousand miles and wanted to go more, but was called homeby family matters. He met fellow kindred spirits on his journey, mak-ing connections that should easily have lasted a lifetime.

Noah met a sweetheart on his trip to Thailand and Josephine cameover here from Sweden to spend more great times. They climbedtogether throughout California. Love and trust are great things tobuild hanging from 160 feet of rope.

Noah is survived by his parents Elizabeth Szymanski and LeeNoble; his brothers Aaron and Victor; and sisters Ali, Yetlanezi andAmalinalli. His cousin, Lyman Petersen, was like a brother and a twin, born just a month after Noah. His grandparents, Lucia and StanSzymanski and Veronica Noble, also loved Noah very much. Otherfamily members devastated by his passing are stepmoms Lisa andFabiola; Uncle Stan and Aunt Rosa; Aunt Lucette; Aunt Rita andUncle Paul; Uncle Dan and Aunt Gina from Nebraska; Uncle Johnfrom Washington; Aunt Linda of Palo Alto, Calif.; Uncle Dan andAunt Tina and Ceasar and Sophia Lanzi from Vancouver. We all loveyou, Noah.

No flowers, please, but a kind donation to your local food bankwould be great.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, atSt. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights.

I've noticed that they are socommon we we tend to ignorethem. But they're there. Flies, lots of them, allkinds of them.Tse Tse flies, house flies, horseflies, fire-flies and manymore. They fly, they buzz, theyland, they'reeverywhere. But have youever giventhought as to the real story ofthe hapless flies? Nobody lovesthem, or likes them, when theyget pesky we take a fly swatterand splat – they're toast! Noremorse on our part, no guilt, and no regret concerning thelife we've taken.

Now, think about it from thefly's point of view. Suppose thefly is you and you're out onyour daily flight, looking forstuff to wallow around in, whensuddenly you see a coffee tablethat looks like a great landingfield. You glide in, make a per-fect eight point landing andstart brushing your legs togeth-er, preparing to spread somegerms. Suddenly you hear aswishing sound, feel the airpressure difference and youlook up. There, descending atabout100 miles an hour, is agreat big flyswatter. Your littlefly life is doomed. As you lookat the weapon hurtling down-ward, your life flashes beforeeach of your multiple eyes.

(This takes a while.) Finally, youstart your escape, but it’s toolate. Splat! Your next stop is flyheaven, or some lesser placedepending if you're a born-again fly or not. Church fliesfeel there is an afterlife for fliesand “splat” is not the end of itall. There has to be a place forlittle flysouls to go! At leastthey hope so, I’m sure.

Meanwhile, the killers(humans) have left squashed lit-tle fly bodies on the coffee tableand everywhere. There is nocrying at the altar, no wailingat the wall, there is no funeralservice and later you're sweptoff the table into a trash can. There is no investigation, noposters with rewards for theapprehension of the serial killerof innocent flies. You don't livelong anyway, and it seems ashame to cut short your tinyspan of existence by someweapon (flyswatter) wieldinghomo sapien.

So... we humans might keepthe above in mind as summerapproaches and the fly popula-tion begins to swell. Knowingwe will probably continue ourwicked ways, at least we canthink about what we're doingand be selective, rememberingthe famous words of Mowshethe Master Fly: "Let my peoplego, or at least some of them!”

MOVEMENT continued from page 2but this had to make us better." He also noted, "We may not have all theanswers but we have hope."

Preston then introduced Jim Ranger, a Bakersfield worship leader (some inthe crowd recognized him as a Season 9 “American Idol” contestant.) He saidthat he and about 40 others in Bakersfield people were affected by the HearUs Movement, and it has touched their lives. He sang some songs that hewrote. One line that was memorable was, "When I face the night, at least Ihave the stars."

Scott Siddle said that the students have a vision to see Hear Us movebeyond the Kern Valley and that people in New York and Colorado alreadywant to do something like this. He then asked those in attendance if they couldfinancially help the group.

Robbie Fisher led the crowd in a Hear Us Movement chant to close out themeeting.
