Speech of Mr. Abdulrahman JawaheryGPIC President

Your Royal Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sport and Chairman of The Bahrain Olympic Committee Our Dear Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all and a special welcome goes to our es-teemed guest His Royal Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. I would like to thank you for honouring us with this visit to the GPIC Complex; we are indeed delighted by your presence here today. May God Preserve you all. Your Highness, It has only been 30 years since the launch of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company. This is undoubtedly a very short period of time in the world of industrial organisations. However, it has been a sufficient period for the Company to occupy a leading position on the global stage and to gain a highly reputed name among thousands of well-established companies in this sector. This is in spite of amazing and rapid changes and developments within this industry and the succes-sive changes that call for adaptation and perseverance, let alone the sweeping economic changes that are witnessed by the world from time to time. As our Company welcomes your Highness, it has been able with the help of God and the direc-

tives of our wise leadership, to realise significant and remarkable achievements. Therefore, the Company has been able to win numerous prestigious awards that are considered a great credit to our beloved country. With the care and support enjoyed from His Majesty the King and the government of Bahrain , we have been able to overcome the consequences of the economic crises and have been able to achieve positive growth rates. Moreover, we have been able to complete and expand our envi-ronmental projects, in addition to enhancing our social corporate responsibilities. In this context, we must pay tribute to the major role played by our Bahraini national employ-ees who, armed with a high level of training, professionalism and ambition, have worked in an environment that abounds in opportunities for creativity and excellence. Your Highness, One of the main keys of the Company’s success is its commitment to corporate responsibility and its concern with giving sports activities the attention they deserves in line with the priorities of modern management. Sport is indeed a real source of support to the team work which has been an integral part of the Company for a long time. Therefore, there is a harmonious relation-ship between sport and industry. Work is governed by the laws of competition and professional-ism; there are rules governing competitiveness and respect for the opponent. Thus, the rules of sport apply also to the world of industry. We do realise the importance of sport in the lives of nations and we also understand the impor-tant role that must be played by the private sector in supporting competitive sports. Anyone who follows the progress of sports in developed nations may witness the extent of contributions made by the private sector. Governments alone cannot and should not undertake this task no matter how wealthy or sophisticated they may be. Therefore, the participation of industry is not only essential but also inevitable in order to achieve genuine development and tangible growth within the sports sector. This is exactly what GPIC is keen to do. In addition to its material support to various sports events and competitions held on the Kingdom’s soil, it has provided convenient conditions for its Bahraini employees, who have become well-known stars in the field of Bahrain sports. Perhaps the best example is the GPIC Volleyball team, which has been able to win the Companies’ Championship for eighteen years in a row. In addition, GPIC’s name is well recognized for sponsoring most sports events very much in the same way that it maintains a presence in economic events. This is specifically the role that we must play as a private sector company. We pledge to Your Highness to continue our duty as genuine partners of the Supreme Coun-cil for Youth and Sport. We undertake not to be complacent in shouldering our responsibility towards promising young athletes, hoping to contribute to the Government’s efforts to achieve sustainable sports development for the good of our beloved country and its young citizens. Finally, we thank Your Highness for giving us the opportunity to familiarise you with the nature of the Company’s operations and activities. We are also thankful to Your Highness for giving our employees the opportunity to speak with Your Highness as you serve as a role model who is looked upon with a great deal of admiration and appreciation. Thank you all for listening.

Statement of HH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa to the Press

It is thanks to the enormous efforts and guidance of His Majesty the King, whose ideas and views have led us today to witness our young generation achieving His Majesty’s vision in the best possible way.

During my visit today to the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, I was astonished to see the quality of sports programmes and facilities provided to the company’s young athletes and the great attention accorded by the company’s management to this issue.

I should say that GPIC’s Complex is not just a petrochemical plant; it is something above and beyond that. It is a natural, green and healthy environment in which special care is provided for wildlife, agriculture and above all, youth and sports. In fact, it is a garden with a petrochemical plant in it, rather than the other way round.

This environment has contributed significantly to the development of the company over the past years. Speaking here today, I encourage and urge other organisations to follow GPIC’s footsteps in their commitment to the youth of Bahrain, as they are the future of our country.
