GPIC AT ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY SHOW AND CONFERENCE

the forum and reflects the general support forAFA throughout the Arab world.

This interest and support, according to Dr. AlSayed, come as a result of the abundant stock ofraw materials for fertiliser production, such asnatural gas, sulphur, potassium and phosphaterock, found in Arab countries. The raw materialscontribute enormously to the production andmarketing of fertilisers by these countries.

Quoting statistics, Dr. Al Sayed mentioned that theArab countries own one third of the world’snatural gas reserves, while their share ofsulphuric acid and phosphates represented morethan 65% of global trade. The export of otherfertilisers ranges between 20% and 50%. It istherefore important that the Arab countriesexploit this favourable position while at the sametime benefiting from an Arab workforce, well-trained and skilled in operating fertiliser plantsemploying the latest technology for production,

maintenance, services, safety and environmentalprotection.

Dr. Al Sayed also announced that AFA will sponsorscientific research in the production andapplication of fertilisers. An annual award will bemade for the best research paper submitted inthese fields. The first award will be announced atthe next AFA International Forum, to be held inJanuary 2004.

Finally, Dr. Al Sayed thanked all sponsors andparticipants. He expressed the hope that theforum will contribute to the development ofindustry in individual countries, as well as to thesecurity of food stocks worldwide.

The Arab Fertiliser Association (AFA) is a non-governmental Arab organisation established in1975 to develop and coordinate the technical, commercial and managerial relations in thefertiliser industries amongst member companies.

SUGGESTION PROGRAMME AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

GPIC Suggestion Programme Committee (SPC) launched a one-week awareness campaigntargeted at all the company employees. The campaign’s objective was to further promote

participation in the “ Brilliant Idea” Programme and to put emphasis on the need for moreinnovative ideas and suggestions.

Committee Chairman Ahmed Nuruddin and Committee Member Yasser A. Rahim deliveredlectures to all the employees to further their awareness of the importance of suggestions andto give them statistics about all the suggestions that were put forward and implemented.

Since its inception 10 years ago, SPC has received more than 3,000 suggestions which havecontributed to cost rationalisation and development of operations. During 2002 the programmewas enhanced by the introduction of a Point Rewards system which applies to any successfullyimplemented suggestion and which in turn entitles its suggestor to a monetary reward.

During the campaign an introduction booklet to the programme, suggestion logo stickers andT-shirts were distributed to the attendees.

The campaign was well received by all the employees and has proved to be another successfulGPIC staff participation event. This contributes to promoting a spirit of creativity anddeveloping innovative ideas to increase productivity and reduce costs.

Cont. from page 10

10. Overall performance of the enterprise, interest in andmeasurement of product quality with a view toimprovement of performance generally.

All these criteria took into account the company’s owninitiatives and other activities that distinguish it fromothers.

GPIC is regarded as a leader in a number of fields. Inproductivity and efficiency the company has achievedrecord figures in the production of Ammonia, Urea andMethanol. The annual output is more than 1.4 millionmetric tons of petrochemicals. These products aremarketed globally which demands high quality standardsas well as the utilisation of sophisticated technologies inorder to be competitive.

In terms of profitability, the company has achievedprofits which have resulted in regular dividendpayments to the shareholders as well as the overallstrengthening of the company’s financial position. Thisfavourable position had an important economic impact. The company was able to continuously invest in theupgrading and refurbishment of equipment andfacilities, utilising the most modern technologiesavailable. World-class maintenance services ensuredthe high standard of reliability while production costsand overheads were reduced. In-house programmes forthe manufacture of spare parts to internationalspecifications were developed to further improveproductivity.

In 1998 the US$170 million Urea project was added to theproduction facilities. The plant has an annual production

of 560,000 metric tons of granulated Urea, utilises stateof the art technology and consolidates the petrochemicaland fertiliser industries in Bahrain. The Urea project wascompleted in record time and commissioned and startedup utilising trained Bahraini manpower with theassistance of local contractors.

Commenting on human resources, Dr. Al Sayedemphasised the special focus placed on Bahrainisationand human resource development. He pointed out thatcompetitiveness and corporate success do not onlyfollow from the assets, equipment and technology, asother organisations employ similar facilities. The factorthat distinguishes one organisation from another is aqualified, creative and motivated workforce within anintegrated corporate culture. GPIC has specificallydeveloped its human resources in line with thisfundamental principle.

The company management strategy which has been thesubject of specialised studies, has been based on a freshapproach to ensure corporate success. The strategies andprinciples depend on the innovative strategicmanagement concept of MOSIF which encompasses thetotal strategic management approach of the enterprise. This concept is coupled to the principle of CREAMOC,which integrates creativity and motivation withcorporate culture. The two management concepts formthe basis of theories now being taught in a number oflocal and international universities and the twoacronyms have been submitted for inclusion in theOxford Dictionary.

To illustrate the practical application of human resourcesdevelopment, participative decision making and thecreation of loyalty, GPIC employs an extensive SuggestionProgramme. Suggestions are given proper review, attention and recognition in line with similarinternational practices. Consequently the scheme hascontributed much to the company, both in terms ofmaterial returns as well as encouragement of andimprovement of performance throughout theorganisation.

Dr. Al Sayed also emphasised the great importanceattached to safety, environment and occupational health.Ever since the preliminary specifications were drawn upfor the initial construction, the designs of all processunits and facilities have adhered to internationalstandards and local legislation for safety, health andenvironment. Today GPIC is enjoying the benefit of that

far-sighted vision and the company has a very proudinternational reputation in these fields. It is alsosignificant that GPIC gained certification to the ISO 9002quality standard in 1995 and to the ISO 14001environmental standard in 1999, one of the firstcompanies in the Gulf region to do so.

The environmental concerns of the company areparticularly impressive and go well beyond levelsrequired by law in Bahrain. A number of projects such asthe Charity Garden, Fish Farm and Bird Sanctuary havebeen implemented to prove beyond doubt the efforts ofGPIC to maintain a clean, unpolluted environment in andaround the complex. These projects also have acharitable aspect to them. Of the 30,000 sea breamharvested annually a portion is distributed to needyfamilies in the immediate vicinity of the complex. Therest is reintroduced to the sea to boost the marine life inthe waters of Bahrain. It is very important to maintainthese environmental efforts as they prove thatindustrial development can be linked successfully toresponsible care for the environment, according to Dr. AlSayed.

Commenting on the significance and meaning of theShaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award, Dr. AlSayed expressed the opinion that this award had broughtabout a quality transformation in terms of excellencethroughout the Arab world. All institutions whethergovernment or privately owned now have a newbenchmark to strive towards. It is an immense source ofpride for GPIC and Bahrain which will motivate the localworkforce as well as encourage regional investors toparticipate in similar projects in the future. It is also avindication of the wise policies of Bahrain’s leadership todiversify the industrial sources of income and employlocal manpower. It should also encourage furtherdevelopment and expansion in GPIC along similar provenjoint venture lines.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressed his sincere thanks andappreciation to H.E. Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Ministerof Oil and Chairman of GPIC for his support and guidancewhich made it possible for the company to achieve thishonour. He conveyed his thanks to the shareholders ofGPIC, the Government of Bahrain, Saudi Basic IndustriesCorporation (SABIC) and Petrochemical IndustriesCompany of Kuwait for their continuous support. He alsothanked the members of the Board of Directors for theirguidance and assistance and he thanked all theemployees for their hard work, loyalty and team spirit.
