compares favourably with the traditional wood mentioned and is most suitable for lathe work. Before ‘jumping into the deep end’, give a bit of thought of the geometry you may remember from your school days; an ellipse has both a major axis and a minor axis; conveniently, a cross section through the ‘fattest’ part of the screwdriver handle is an ellipse (check with calipers), remembering that geometry, the spacing for the off-setting is half the difference between the major and minor axis’s (in the case of the example shown, the difference is 16mm so the spacing needed to be 8mm ( more simply put, 8mm on each side of the middle punch mark to throw the wood off-centre enabling thinning the wood to that of the original handle’s elliptical shape ). The following photos tell the rest of the story.

1.Three centres spaced 8mm 2.Set up on central axis (middle hole)

3. Turn to larger profile using middle centre 4. Using top centre

5. Bottom centre, end to be refined 6. Sanded, end to be removed and hand-sanded

7.The handle is now fitted, received two brush coats of shellac and the screwdriver/ turnscrew is ready for action.

8.The elliptical handle enables a comfortable and positive purchase on the handle.

2020 EXPO News With the Expo less than 3 weeks away, I thought it timely to send a little note about what is happening. On Friday the 6th, I will need 2 members to help get the equipment out from under the OFS at 4pm. I will finalise this at this week’s meeting. Tony will be helping Ted bring the machines from Ted’s place. Set-up at the Masonic hall will be at 4.30pm. The more people we have for the setup the easier it will be to get it done. I have been assured that the steps at the rear door will be finished and in use. We do need an extra 4 foldup tables for the display, so those who have offered these will need to bring them to the Hall at 4.30. Any members who will be selling items will need to bring them on Friday to set out once the hall is ready. The most important part of the weekend display will be our Club Challenge Showcase. Could all members make sure their entry is at the hall by 8.30am on the Saturday at the latest. If you have not yet started on your entry, now is the time to get started. I know some/all of us are time poor, but this is our major event of the year and we need 100% participation to make the Showcase a success. Those members doing demonstrations, please don’t forget to bring any electrical leads you will be using to this week’s meeting to give to Barry in order for him to test and tag for the expo. The official opening times will be 9.00am till 4.00pm on the Saturday and Sunday, although I will be on the site from 7.30am on both days, so feel free to get there early. Please give as much of your time over the weekend as you can spare, as we need to be there to not only man the sales table, do the demonstrations, sell raffle tickets, explain the entries in the Showcase and get people to vote for the peoples choice, but also to be available to talk to the public about woodworking in general and how they can become involved in the club. Pack up will be on Sunday at the close of the Expo. As many hands as possible at this time would also be appreciated to get it done quickly, not just packing away stuff but getting the hall and surrounds clean. Looking forward to a great Exposition of our club for 2020 David Bywater

January Turned Pen Finishing Demonstration by David Bywater The members were treated to an entertaining and informative pen turning finishing demonstration at the January meeting. David presented his setup and the methodology employed in sanding and finishing his pens with C.A glue. I’m sure some of this demonstration has stuck with everyone and are itching to make a few pens. Some photos of the night follow:-
