So… we can make this a mega sale with the addition of KWG member contributing to the items for auction. The Boomerang Man-Tony Butz At the last meeting we had the pleasure of being entertained and informed about the origins of the ancient boomerang by our guest speaker, Tony Butz. This was a very good presentation and certainly covered a lot of topics, I have the feeling Tony could have talked for much longer as he was truly passionate about this useful piece aboriginal woodwork. We discovered the name boomerang, is the term used by our local indigenous people and there are many more names for this implement indigenous to other aboriginal peoples across Australia. However the term boomerang has now stuck and that’s the common expression for a piece of wood that comes back or an item you want returned to you! We also discovered how they were made, the type of timber used, the different shapes, the inception of boomerang throwing competitions and many more interesting anecdotes. I guess the most interesting fact that was debunked is the boomerang was really a toy for men while killing time so to speak and it wasn’t used for hunting at all! The boomerang in the photo below was presented to General Douglas Mac Arthur on his birthday 26 January 1943 by Australian officers at GHQ.

Ted Hawkins shed auction

Sad News: Our heartfelt condolences go out to Joe White, a long standing member of the KWG club. Joe’s wife Mary, passed away during the month of June. Those of us that know Joe well are deeply saddened by his terrible loss and wish to express our deepest sympathies to Joe and his family.

________________________________________________________________________________ W.H.S. update. Our W.H.S. policy manual has now been printed and will be made available to current and future

members via our monthly meetings over the next few months. Those members unlikely to attend

before Christmas will be contacted and other suitable arrangements made.

As mentioned previously, we as a club, already understand and observe 90% of this manuals

contents. However, its secondary purpose is to show any third party that we do in fact understand,

practice and document our work place health and safety protocols.

I have been advised by a ( V.E.T. ) vocational education and training officer that our club will now be

in a much better position should we experience an accident in the future or indeed an insurance claim.

The document copy each member will receive is for the duration of their membership. Upon resigning

from the club their copy is to be returned to the committee for reissue to a new member. The folder

that contains the policy allows for individual page exchange should any future updates be required.

The role of our safety officer is to keep and maintain the ‘master’ W.H.S. copy. It will contain day to

day records of any hazard reports plus the members ‘competency’ chart. Blank forms for the ‘sign on’

and ‘hazard’ sheets will also be on hand. He/she will be available to assist members, guests and

exhibitors to comply with our safety rules plus oversee our exhibitions ensuring every ones experience

is a SAFE one.

HELP! Committee positions and activities will again be ‘up for grabs’ this coming July at our A.G.M. While all

committee positions will be vacated as usual you don’t have to be ‘on the committee’ to still HELP out,

there’s plenty of opportunity this time around to participate. So, please seriously consider getting

involved. Sharing the load between a few more of our members reduces the pressure on individuals

and will ensure we are able to continue with an Expo next March plus provide ourselves with guest

speakers, outings and sales opportunities.

By Tony Walsh.

Three weeks ago I spent a couple of days down the coast

around Narooma. While there I called in to The 22nd Annual

Woodscrew Exhibition at Central Tilba. A very friendly bunch

of folk with quite a show of woodwork. The entry fee was a

modest $2-00, raffle tickets at $1.00 and a ‘people’s choice’

award competition collection to envy that totalled 47 items.

The show spaned both Saturday & Sunday, would be a bit far

to travel just for a couple of hours on any one day, but suited

me as I had other things to do on the Sunday. The village of

Central Tilba is a fabulous time capsule and certainly worth a

wander around. Plenty of places to eat, accommodation and

Tilba Tilba is just up the road, might make a weekend away

next year. Something closer to home to ‘pencil in ‘ the diary is

the upcoming ‘Illawarra Festival of Wood’ at the Bulli

Showground on Friday 6th & Saturday 7th October. Then

later on is the ‘Graduating Exhibition’ at the Sturt School of

Wood in Mittagong from Saturday 18th November for two

weeks.

What came first the egg or the egg poacher

I was given this antique egg poacher a few months ago from my mother, whom is also an antique, she seems to have a variety of gadgets that no longer get used. This little gem is a sunbeam with a Bakelite lid, it must be a least 40 years old. It worked a treat however, it was missing the centre lifter which made it awkward to get the eggs out of the carousel. So, “John Daniel “offered to make me a new one out of brass. This work well but was bloody hot! So the next tool needed was the lifter for the lifter, now it was just right! The tool handle was fashioned from a nice piece of gidgee with a modified table fork. All I need now is some to cook for me! Thanks John.
