Message from the Head Teacher As you will see from this month’s newsletter, we have been lucky enough to welcome David

Dein to school. He was both inspirational and generous with his time as he talked to

students about determination, commitment and resilience to achieve. I would like to thank

David, and all those outside of education who provide opportunities in support of the work of

schools. It is much appreciated.

At the end of this half term we say good bye to Deputy Headteacher Mrs Sanders who is

retiring early in order to support her elderly parents. On behalf of staff, governors, students

and parents/carers, I would like to thank her for her years of commitment to

Kingsbury. We wish her well in her future. Ms C O’Driscoll, Head Teacher

Punctuality pays off for Lauren

A massive well done to Lauren Jarvis-Lanchester whowon a PS4 in our ‘H82BL8’ punctuality campaign! Laurenis pictured being given her prize by staff governor MrsWinkless.

David Dein VIP visit

On 7th October we were thrilled to welcome football entrepreneur and businessmanDavid Dein to school. The former Vice Chairman of Arsenal FC and the FA andpresident of Arsenal Ladies FC spent time with students in a Q&A session beforedelivering an inspiring assembly to Year 11.

David was one of the architects of the Premier League in 1992 and has been at the forefront of many of theimportant changes in football including the introduction of Goal Line Technology.

He engaged and entertained students and staff with his presentation, in which he highlighted the successfactors in football and how these apply equally to education and life in general. David used lots ofinspirational quotes during his talk, but we thought that one in particular sums up our ethos at Kingsbury:“Be better tomorrow than today.”

House Poetry Competition

Congratulations to Y9 student Andie Milliken from Ravenhill House for her winning poem about WW1,

produced below:

Saints and Sinners

I wonder now, if like your bodies, your souls have been laid to rest Tortured memories and bitter hearts successfully repressed Or do you still lie upon that dusty ground, ill -clad in a wretched sorrow?

Still dreaming of that white Christmas and the promise of tomorrow?

But in those final moments, what was it that flashed to mind?

A daughter’s tears, a son’s beaming smile or a wife left behind?

Perhaps it was this growing hatred, this abhorrence of mankind Did the world around you spin; fade into a whiteness that brought the darkness?

Aroused only from the dreary state from a screaming night shining starless.

Was it quick, did it last?

Creeping in like the dead hand of past The crisp white snow now painted a candy -cane red Among the falling snowflakes the victims of the dead Your bodies may decay but these memories will remain

The day, the night, the year we lead the chaos and the pair And through grew the years of the sinners not the saints, theinnocents who died in such a mocking display Some rose and fought and under iron fist refused to obey And so for the hero and the coward, we remember anyway.

Careers Information

Year 11 students should be visiting 6 th forms, colleges

and training institution open events now to prepare for

next year.

A list of local open dates is displayed in school and is

also on the school website under Students. We willalso be having our own Careers Fair on 13th

November, for students in Years 9,10 and 11.

Sainsbury’s visit

Last term students visited the bakery at Sainsbury’s Castle Vale tofind out about the process of food production and to see behind thescenes of retail. Sheila Hyland, Sainsbury’s PR manager, organised

the visit:

“ All the students were very well behaved and it was a pleasure tospend the day with them” said Mrs Hyland.

Ms O’Driscoll participated in the visit: “What a fantastic opportunity toget to see how a large retailer is committed to hand made produce.Thank you Sainsbury’s and Mrs Hyland for your hospitality .”Pictured is Gill Woodfield from Sainsbury’s with three of our students.

Kingsbury Cup creates a stir!

Kingsbury School and Sports College is buzzing after the recent introduction of a new vertical housesystem. The aim is to bring different years closer together and cultivate an atmosphere of friendly but fiercecompetition as everyone strives for greater success within the school. The five houses are each namedafter influential figures that either originate from, or have once lived in Birmingham.

Throughout the year houses compete in a variety of competitions in an attempt to win the highly covetedKingsbury House Cup. Points are awarded for extra -curricular participation, and for each house’s weeklyoverall attendance, punctuality and the positive contributions of those who have secured a ‘Super 6’ perfectweek in all classes. This is where the House Cup can be won and lost and students are really gettingbehind it, making for an extremely tight competition. Currently, Ravenhill lead the pack but not by much as

Wilberforce are in hot pursuit!

Students believe that the house system has made a positive impact in the short time it has been in place.“The different colour ties make us stand out so everybody knows what house we are in. Also the schoolcommunity has become a lot stronger as we now get to know the other years, not just our own.” The senseof pride is spreading through the school and the only question left is who will take home the KingsburyHouse Cup and be crowned champions?
