INTEGRATED PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT

FOR SUSTAINABLE COCOA PRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Cocoa is affected by range of pests and diseases with estimates putting losses as high as 30% - 40% of global production.

In 2000, the cocoa pod borer in Indonesia had infested 60,000 hectares inflicting losses of US $40 million per year.

Pod rot or black pod (P.palmivora) causes global yield loss of 20% - 30% and tree deaths of 10% annually.

Therefore, an Integrated Pest and Disease Management approach is a must to combat these factors that limits cocoa production.

PRINCIPLES OF IPM 1. Grow a healthy crop 2. Conserve the natural enemies 3. Regular monitoring 4. Farmers as experts/managers (decision making)

What do farmers want and need? People remember : 20% of what they HEAR 40% of what they SEE 80% of what they DISCOVER FOR THEMSELVES

Pruning

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”

Integrated Pest and Disease

Management

“Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, I struck them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me, declares the LORD.”

Amos 4:9 (NLT)

Integrated Pest and

Disease Management ‘’Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, ‘’I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

Malachi 3:10 – 11 (NLT)

Tithing

“A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs t the Lord; it is holy to the LORD.”

A COCOA GROWER WHO DOES NOT LOOK AFTER HIS FARM PROPERLY CANNOT HARVEST PLENTY OF BIG, CLEAN PODS AND WILL NOT EARN MUCH MONEY.

PEOPLE, IT HAS BEEN SAID, CAN BE PLACED IN THREE CLASSES: THE FEW WHO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, THE MANY WHO WATCH THINGS HAPPEN, AND THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAS HAPPENED. -NICHOLAS MURRAY BUTLER
