  • Liam and Anna Mongey toast the opening of the K.Y. C. C. with Phil and Paddy Collins

THE DREAM THAT CAME TRUE . . . For the past four years we have taken a deep interest in the stretch of land between the Presbytery and the School. We watched anxiously as the building slowly took shape, then suddenly, one day, it was finished. The Knocklyon Youth and Community Centre was a reality.

The opening ceremony was a splendid affair, witnessed by hundreds of people, young and old and then celebrated afterwards wi th tea, fizz and cakes. Everyone inspected the newly unveiled plaque which read:

Opened by Rev. Father Staunton, O. Carm and

Liam Mongey on 29th January 1989

For these men it was the realization of a dream and for Liam Mongey it was one of the proudest moments of his life.

Liam is a doer and has always been one, ever since he joined the St. John Bosco Boys Club at the age of ten. 1955 was a dreary time in Ireland, money was scarce and emigration rampant. The club was a bright spot, cheerful and active and Liam loved it. He dabbled in Arts and Crafts, learned how to repair shoes and made his entry into the world of Table Tennis, eventually making Division 1 in the Leinster League. By the age of 18 he was completely 'hooked' on Youth work and trained as a Youth Leader.

Like many young people in those days he left school early. His pay helped out at home, but he continued to study by night learning Purchasing and Supply in Rathmines Tech. He then became a Store-keeper but all his spare time was devoted to the Youth League, even when he met Anna (his wife) she also became involved in the Youth movement. " I ' l l meet you under Clery's c lock" he would say and on doing so, would whisk her off to a League match, where she

would be detailed to make the tea. "Anna is one in a mi l l ion" Liam agrees. "She has never, ever complained — only to question if I am doing too much".

In 1964 he joined the Industrial Sales Division of Calor Gas where he is involved in Projects and Design of various types of Industrial Heating. He travels the country and calls on such diverse industries as Pigger-ies, Meat Processors and Factories. In 1970 he was married and six years later moved to Glenvara with his family. By 1977 he was up and doing again when he and Tony O'Connell set up the Knocklyon Youth Club. There were 20 members. They met once a week in the school and were later joined by Jack Begley and Pauline Doyle, who operated a roster system and took turns to supervise. As the Parish grew so did the mem-bership. Soon there was a long waiting list. It was one day when Liam was talking to Father Staunton that the dream was born — the idea of building a Youth Community Centre, that was 1982.

Before long an introductory letter was sent to the Archbishop and soon the Trustees of the Parish Property offered them the lease on a plot behind the Presbytery.

Planning went on behind the scenes and in 1985 a great publicity drive for fundraising was started by Liam and money began to pour in; £11,000 in the first two weeks and a further commitment of £40,000. People rallied round and fundraising became part of daily life. £70,000 in grants was eventually donated by the Government. The cost in all £170,000.

" I t is impossible to name everyone who gave their time and efforts to the cause" says Liam "but some have to be mentioned. Paddy Collins for in-stance, who for the past 12 months has daily surveyed the building, giving his full professional advice as an architect. Cormac Nagle, who looked after the pennies, Michael Coleman who is now Chairman of the Board of Directors, Con O'Grady, a great PR man, and the priests of St. Colmcille's, who gave their unending support. To all who helped in any way, we are eternally grateful".

The Centre wi l l cater for all age groups — Aerobics, ICA, Keep Fit, Jazz Dancing, Senior Citizens, to mention but a few, but Friday and Saturday will be given over to the Youth Club, who have first claim.

Last year, Liam resigned as Chairman of the Youth Club and on that occasion the Committee presented him with a Silver Salver — a token of appreciation for his years of dedication. The Salver is now his most treasured possession. His new job is Chairman of the Knocklyon Youth and Community Centre and he is looking forward to the challenge of the future. One thing is certain, he wil l never get away from the young folk. " I love them" he says. " I love people — but especially kids".

  • SECOND LEVEL EDUCATION THANK YOU, JULIE! OUR LADY'S SCHOOL

Our Lady's School, Templeogue Road, is under the Management of the Religious of Christian Education. Priority is given to the following three Primary Schools: Our Lady's Junior School, St. PiusX School and St. Colmcille's, Knocklyon. Other applications are accepted strictly on date of application. Registra-tion takes place in Term 1 of the previous year and an Entrance Examination which is strictly non-competi-tive is held early in the following March. The wearing of the full school uniform is compulsory. The school operates a 6-year cycle — three years to Intermediate followed by a transition year and a two year Senior Cycle. The School is grant aided by the Department of Education and therefore depends on the voluntary contributions of parents for the maintenance of exist-ing facilities. As the school seeks to create conditions in which each pupil can attain her full potential and develop her personal gifts and talents emphasis is placed equally on academic achievement, physical education, personal development programmes and music and dramatic activities. Hockey is the main school sport. Others however are involved in Basket-ball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Soccer, Tennis and Gymnastics. Constant links with Terenure College are maintained, facilities are shared and common projects are undertaken.

TERENURE COLLEGE Terenure College is run by the Carmelite Order. The College has been in existence since 1860 and has grown over the years and today it accommodates over 1,000 pupils divided between Junior and Senior Schools. A wide variety of educational, cultural and social experiences is provided to include Arts and Science, Computer Studies, Career Guidance and counselling. Sport has always played an important part in the life of the College with spacious grounds, fully equipped gymnasium and heated swimming pool. Rugby is the traditional and principle game of the College. In the summer term, tennis, cricket and athletics are popular, while indoor sports include bad-minton and.table tennis. If sport is not a favourite, there are also chess, computer and photography clubs. It is advised to apply at least one year prior to entrance. The school is fee paying (currently £660 p.a.) There are six years to the school cycle to include a transition year. Uniform is compulsory. There is an entrance exam for assessment purposes.

It is with great regret that at the end of February we will be saying good-bye to Julie Stein who has been the Captain of the Knocklyon Guide Company for many years. She is getting married in April and will be moving to live abroad. Julie has given hours of her time, expertise and caring to hundreds of girls in the parish who have been members of the Guide Company. She has brought fun, laughter and learning into their lives through Guiding.

Julie will be missed by us all and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to her for all she has done for Guiding and Guides in the parish. We wish her every happiness in her future married life.

Because Julie is leaving, the Company is looking for a new leader. We require at least one leader who is over 21 years of age and all leaders should be over 17 years. There is no upper age limit. The only qualifica-tions required are that the leader should be able to enjoy working with a bunch of pleasant girls, enjoy an active lifestyle or be able to encourage others into one and be able to have fun. If anyone thinks they might be able to offer help to keep the Guide Company going please contact Julie Stein (905803) or any member of the Guide Company.

  • OPEN O U R EYES, L O R D . THE FRIDA Y MORNING GANG

Did you know that there is now installed in St. Colmcille's Senior School, a monitor to gauge the smog level, etc. in the area — a posi-tive and rather ominous sign of the times? I understand it is a sophisticated and expensive bit of equipment, a project promoted and funded by Dublin County Council.

I saw it for the first time when visiting one of the 3rd classes and these same young Knock-lyoners were by no means unaware of the prob-lems. They could tell me for instance, that at least some of their homes were now consciously burning smoke free fuel. They were familiar with the present increasingly accepted theory, as to why the current winter is the warmest since records began over a hundred years ago — the so-called "greenhouse ef fec t" , namely that gases, released when burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil are accumulating in the upper atmosphere. This in turn traps the heat that would otherwise radiate into space.

They knew too about another major possible consequence, if this warming effect were to continue. It would result in a significant rise in sea level, caused by melting ice and snow in polar regions reducing the land area of low lying countries like Bangladesh by as much as two thirds.

Which all might add up to reminding us, that God's beautiful creation was given us to enjoy, not to destroy. "When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, what is man that you should keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him? Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honour you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hand, put all things under his feet. All of them, sheep and cattle, yes even the savage beasts, birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters. .

    Pat Alan Fitz

On a recent visit to the Church, a lot of laughter and clinking of cups was overheard by our local reporter! Entering the sacristy, no priests, no altar servers and no vestments in sight, just lots of happy chatty ladies, plates of cakes, china cups and pots of tea. "Is this the new coffee dock?" "No, we're the Friday morning cleaners."

    OUR GIRLS FRIDAY!

The A.G.M. of the Parish Council will take place in the Parish Centre on Thursday 16th February at 8.00 p.m. As the Parish Council is directly responsible in assisting the priests in the liturgical, financial and social life of the parish, we would like as many as possible to attend this meeting.

With the current hype on property, we asked some local auctioneers (our advertisers) what is the current situation wi th houses in Knock-lyon? The answers wil l make you blush — little did you know what a sought after area you live in.

Knocklyon is so popular because it is such a well serviced area, near schools, shops, bus routes and church. Proximity to the Primary Schools is an excellent selling point according to Mary Dillon of MacCarthy Auctioneers.

Of course none of these facilities were here when the first housing estate was built — Knocklyon Woods — in 1973. The 3 bed semi with garage cost £7,575 and the dearest in the development only a few thousand more. Those were the days when Mass was said in the Mclnerney canteen located in a pre-fab in the Delaford Park area.

When we asked J.B.N. Greene & Co. how long it took to sell a house in Knocklyon, "Days" was the enthusiastic reply — "We cannot get enough houses to satisfy the demand".

The demand comes from all types, but two groups come to the fore. The first being second generation Templeoguers and the second are people already in the area moving for more living space.

All the auctioneers agree that home improve-ments wil l not add a lot to the price of your house but it wil l help to sell a house quicker. People should also bear in mind that the com-fort gained by such improvements pay for themselves over a few years.

Three bed semi houses that were selling for £35,000 two years ago are now fetching £40,000 and this figure can be negotiated up-wards depending on the condition of the house. Four to five bed semis are reaching up to the mid £60's and the large detached houses around £70,000.

Tempted to sell — well, you'll have no short-age of advice from the local auctioneers who seem to have the whole area of Knocklyon up on a pedestal. Think about it seriously before you do and Good Luck!

  • Y O U N G O N E S O N L Y . . .

    Hi Everyone,

How is it going? Some of the teachers were talking to me the other day. They were a little bit upset. You see most of the school books, the Irish, English and Religion books go through the whole year. They begin in Autumn with the leaves falling off the trees and go on to tell of Halloween and so on. The parts of the books they were supposed to be using now are all about winter. They show pictures of snow covered houses and snowmen and snow-women and long icicles and children with long wooly scarfs and hats. But there has been no snow as yet anyway and the weather has not been all that cold and flowers are already coming up in the garden — snowdrops and crocuses and daffodils — the birds are singing and the grass is growing. What are the poor teachers to do — it seems silly to talk about snow when there is no snow and it's not even cold. Some people are saying that Zig and Zag are in charge of the weather now! I hope that is not true because if it is goodness knows what might happen — snow in the middle of Ju ly — a heat-wave in November and worse. I want you to draw or paint a picture or write a short story or poem about what you think it would be like if Zig and Zag were in charge of the weather.

Please send me whatever you do as soon as you can — just pu t it in an envelope, write Fr. J o e on it and leave it up to the Presbytery — the house beside the Church.

That 's all for now. Lots of love, Fr. Joe.
