PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE/ FOUNDATION'S MESSAGE

I want to wish each and every one of you a year of sweetness. What good Jew doesn’t also wish all their friends and family a year of health and happiness. I want everyone to not just think of that as words, but to really mean it. As many of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents have told us over the years, there is nothing as important as your health.

We know there are many of you out there who are in need of healing right now. We are all wishing you well and are here to help in any way we can. Then of course there are the rest of us that are fortunate to be in good health of mind, body and spirit. It is very easy for many of us to take this for granted. We should all be grateful for and appreciate what we have. There will always be tough times we must overcome, as well as adversity we must face. So, when things are going well, be appreciative of that time and use it to reach out to others who are not so fortunate. Then when struggles do come around to you, it can be very helpful to put it into the proper perspective. Often times, things are not as bad as we imagine, and certainly times could always be worse.

Since we are trying to put everything into the proper perspective, I want to share one of the great things going on in our congregation right now. We have had a steady increase in the number of families these last couple of years and are now at 553 families. This is a number we have not seen for many years. This has also resulted in a large increase in the number of children enrolled in our Torah Center. Thankfully, we have such a great Educator and Torah Center teaching staff to go along with our congregational family that I know our future is in great hands. I intend to be around throughout all the holidays this season and look forward to speaking with you during these occasions. Please feel free to come up to me and start a conversation. Until then, L’Shana Tovah.

APPLE & HONEY FOR ALLBy Steven Keiles, Temple President

The Temple Israel of Long Beach Foundation is charged with handling the long term investments of Temple Israel as a Fiduciary and in a prudent manner. What is a Fiduciary? A Fiduciary manages the assets of another for the benefit of that entity and not for the benefit of the Fiduciary. An example of not acting as a Fiduciary is when an investment advisor puts clients in investments with excessive fees or which are not appropriate for the

client’s circumstances.

The Foundation Board’s primary responsibility is to provide ongoing support to the Temple while preserving and growing the assets for future Temple use as the economy and markets permit. The Board also has responsibility to the providers of specific Donor Funds to use them for the purposes intended by the donors when the gift was made. Since several of the donor fund gifts were lightly documented, the Board gets to engage in lively discussion interpreting or divining the wishes of the donor. In addition to being a Fiduciary, the Board must act in a prudent manner.

The historically called “Prudent Man Rule” is a requirement that Trustees manage the assets of the Trust in the same manner you would expect that persons would manage their own assets. While no individual on the Board would claim to meet all of those requirements the collective wisdom of the Board gets pretty close. Prudent “Man” should of course now be Prudent “Person” but the wordsmiths have not gotten around to it yet.

The Prudent Person/Man Rule has been documented in the Prudent Investor Act which includes things that a prudent man would have figured out anyway.

Keeping this in mind, the Foundation Board attempts to maintain a balance between preserving capital (to protect the future of the fund and thus the donation that can made back to the Temple) and generating income - so that we can do even more. We ensure that Foundation's investments are diversified so that no single investment can damage the portfolio badly. As you can understand, acting prudently does not mean that every investment will be successful, but our goal is to generate more funds every year so that we can reinvest in our wonderful Temple programming. By leaving your legacy with the Temple Foundation, you can help to secure our future.

The Board employs the Shadden Group, a long standing local company and subsidiary of Morgan Stanley, as discretionary managers of our assets. Shadden invests according to our investment guidelines and has the same Fiduciary responsibilities as our Board. They professionally act as our Fiduciary and personally believe in the importance of the concept... and we keep a close eye on them.

The custom of dwelling in a sukkah as a matter of ritual law started after the Jews returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian captivity. (Ezra 3:2-4) Nehemiah reported of this practice, “The Israelites had not done so from the days of Joshua.” (Neh. 8:17) Also, King Solomon chose it to celebrate the consecration of the Temple and public reading of the Torah was to take place every seven years on Sukkot. (Deut. 31:10-13)

Sukkot has other names besides Chag and Chag ha-Sukkot: it's also referred to as chag ha-asif, "festival of the ingathering" (Ex. 23:16), chag Adonai, "festival of the Lord" (Lev. 23:39; Judg. 21:19), chag ba-chodesh hashvei'e, "festival of the seventh month" (Ezek. 45:25; Neh. 8:14) and zeman simchateinu, "season of our rejoicing." (Deut. 16:14) Sukkot is unmatched by any other holiday in the number of sacrifices required: 70 young bulls along with other sacrifices [Numbers 29:12–39].

Did they live in sukkot or tents? Sukkot was transformed from a mere agricultural celebration to a commemoration of the Israelites’ 40-year journey through the wilderness. “You shall dwell in sukkot seven days ... so that your generations shall know that I [God] caused the children of Israel to dwell in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt” (Lev. 23:42–43). However, we can find many statements in other places in the Torah talking about Israelites dwelling in tents (i.e., Ex. 16:16, 33:8, 10; Num. 11:10, 16:27, 24:5; Deut. 1:27, 5:27).

A rabbinic debate recorded in Sifra, the Halakhic Midrash on Leviticus shows in (Sifra Emor 17:11 [103a-b]), R. Eliezer says: They were real sukkot. R. Akiba says: The sukkot were the clouds of glory.

Akiba’s interpretation is based upon viewing the sukkot of Leviticus 23:42-43 as the metaphorical shelter of God’s sukkah, the sheltering cloud that accompanied the Israelites during their trek. “And they journeyed from Sukkot (it’s a location, too!) and they camped at Ethom, in the edge of the wilderness and the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them in their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give light to them....” (Ex. 13:20–21) Therefore, the holiday of sukkot is a commemoration of Israelites’ wandering in the desert and not a re-enactment of it.

R. Akiba’s opinion was accepted as the majority rabbinic interpretation and is found in the targums (the Aramaic translations of the Torah) and in many later writings. Akiba’s argument is that sukkot are not built in the desert; they are built in agricultural fields for the protection of the workers and their animals. They’re constructed of—tree branches, wood, straw, etc. Such materials are not found in the desert but an agricultural place.

The three mitzvot of Sukkot: y To dwell in the sukkah for the seven-day festival and eat a minimum of one meal (the first night – in Israel there’s a second meal for the second night in the diaspora). Snacks may be eaten during the rest of the festival. (Orach Cahim 639:3)

y Building the sukkah: The rabbis had no guidance from the Torah about how to build a kosher sukkah, so matters about construction and even what actually constituted "living in a sukkah" had to be debated and codified.

y Lulav and Etrog: On the first day you shall take the pri etz hadar (fruit of beautiful trees), branches of palm trees, boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook, and shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days (Lev. 23:40).

y Rejoicing in the holiday. Celebrate with joyfulness on Sukkot; in fact, it is referred to as zeman simchateinu, “season of our rejoicing.” (Deut. 16:14)

Welcoming Ushpizin (Guests). The kabbalists in the 16th century established this tradition. Based on the Zohar, Jews invite seven symbolic guests (ushpizin in Aramaic) to celebrate the festival with them in the sukkah. The traditional ushpizin are: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David. According to tradition, on each night of the festival a different ushpizin enters the sukkah first, followed by the remaining six.

Want to see how Temple Israel is rejoicing on Sukkot this year? Watch a movie: “Ushpizin” and join Sukkot At Home. See you there. Chag ha-Sukkot!

As you can see in the photos, having fun is one of our priorities at Sisterhood. But we have a serious social action mission as well, and that’s to contribute to the Temple and do tikkun olam in our community. Our projects vary, but include purchasing Mishkan HaneFesh for the High Holidays, the new bimah, food drives, tzedakah for hungry and homeless college students, Make a Difference Day, warm jacket drives, health and education programs, diapers and new baby items for our LGBT refugee mother, Random Acts of Kindness, and assisting women and families in many other areas. Sisterhood is a great place to express your social action commitment and enjoy friendships with women of like mind. Join us!

TORAH CENTER/ ANDI

TEMPLE ISRAEL’S 9-12 GRADE YOUTH GROUP

By McKenzie Malone, ANDI SecretaryOctober was a great month for ANDI. We kicked it off with our Erev Rosh Hashana teen service, beautifully created and lead by our Religious and Cultural Vice President, Sara Gerstman. Special thanks to Bill Shafton for his help with the musical accompaniment. We have two more teen services planned for the year: our teen service and dance party on January 20, 2017 and our end of the year celebration for our 8th through 12th graders, on June 9, 2017. During our monthly meeting we finalized programing for our SOCAL NFTY 678 regional event, which we are hosting at Temple Israel for the all of Southern California's 6th, 7th and 8th graders on December 3, 2016. We also completed our programming piece for the upcoming SOCAL NFTY Social Justice Kallah. We are honored to be asked to run a program for our peers on the topic of acceptance. In an effort to excite our incoming 8th graders about joining ANDI, in January, we stopped by their Wednesday class, had some fun, and got to know them better. We can’t wait for them to join us!

TISHREI – TIME FOR A FRESH LOOK By Deborah Lewis, V.P. Education

The month of Tishrei is a time for new beginnings, fresh starts, and new opportunities. At Rosh HaShanah we reflect on the past year and look at what changes we hope to make in the upcoming year. At Torah Center (TC) we have begun a brand new school year. We are excited to see returning students and new faces alike. As we continue with our successful school curriculum and programs, we also continue to build on what we already

have in place.

Tishrei is also a time of gathering and community. As we begin this new year and in this spirit, I invite parents to join in some of the many opportunities offered at Torah Center, as well as the larger Temple Israel community, to become involved and connect with other parents. These include:

y Torah Center Committee - TCC provides guidance to the educational program of the Torah Center. The TCC is currently involved in the process of Torah Center accreditation. The TCC is also involved in building bridges between the school and families. As such, a new family mentoring program is being developed and the room parent program is continuing as an integral program of TCC. Torah Center Committee meets approximately four times during the school year on Sunday mornings. To become involved, please contact Greg Endelman or Sharon Brown.

y Horim U’Morim - HUM organizes fundraisers that support enrichment activities at Torah Center, such as the 3rd – 6th grade overnight. In doing this, there are opportunities to meet and build relationships with other parents. These include organizing and selling Gelt Grams and Matzah Rocha, assisting with a wine tasting event, and helping to coordinate staff appreciation events. Please come to the informal mixer on Sunday, October 9th, from 9:30-10:30 or contact Karen Ben-Shmuel.

Other ways to become involved is to help with Torah Center holiday celebrations and grade level activities.

The opportunities to learn, connect, and become involved don’t stop at Torah Center. I invite you to enjoy some of the many other opportunities offered at Temple Israel. This month you will receive your Joys of Jewish Learning catalogue. JJL offers you, as an adult, a variety of educational opportunities including lectures, movie nights, cooking classes, art classes, outings, and more. The program is designed for those beginning or continuing their Jewish educational journey. Come enjoy one of the many classes the Temple has to offer. Or come to Torah study on a Shabbat morning and join in reading and discussing

the weekly parasha. There is always something new to learn from the text, the Rabbi, and each other.

Opportunities to connect and find meaning and community at the Temple don’t stop with Torah Center and our adult educational programs. Take a look through the Kol Yisrael, talk to staff, or speak with the board members for other opportunities to become involved. There are Sisterhood, the Caring Community, the Women’s Book Club, Men’s Club, and many committees.

Finally, just come. Come to a Humdinger and dine with other TC families. Come in for a cup of coffee and a chat on a Sunday morning in the sitting area next to the library. Come to a service. Come to a movie. Come to a class. Come say hello. As this new year starts, I hope you will take time to connect with each other, learn, and celebrate at Temple Israel. You are an important part of the Temple Israel community and we want to be an important and meaningful part of your life.

For any questions or assistance, please feel free to contact me, Deborah Lewis, VP of Education, Sharon Brown, Temple Educator, or the Temple office. All contact information can be found in our Temple directory or by contacting the office.L’Shana Tovah!

EXPERIENCE ISRAEL / LIBRARYEXPERIENCE ISRAEL NEWSby Bonnie BachenheimerOne of the benefits to making Aliyah is Israel’s “universal health care.” The government has decreed that “citizens are entitled to basic health care as a fundamental right.”

Upon receipt of your Teudat Zehut (ID card) you are eligible for health care through one of four not-for-profit insurance organizations. Luckily I joined Maccabi, since their main office is right up the street from my apartment. Israel’s health care system is ranked fourth in the world for efficiency; we are the sixth healthiest country in the world, and eighth in life expectancy.

For less than $50 a month I have the “premium” plan, which covers dental (check-ups twice per year) and “Maccabi T’vi, with access to acupuncture, shiatsu, reiki, massage and chiropractic. When I call the doctor, I can speak with someone in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian or English. I usually get an appointment the same or the next day. My prescriptions run $5-$10 for a 3-month supply; it takes about ten minutes to pick them up – if there’s a line.

I recently spent 16 days at Assaf HaRofeh Medical Center (see Facebook post, 13 September). It’s difficult to compare this hospital stay to the USA, since the last time I was hospitalized was when my son was born, 30 years ago. I can report that my experience was outstanding. The interns and residents are extraordinary; the nurses, physicians’ assistants, housekeeping and administrative staff are exceptional. At meals we were given the choice of taking the tray in our room or eating in the day room. This was nice, since I was able to see, meet and speak with other patients on my floor.

We were encouraged to go outside to the healing sun every day. I saw patients in wheelchairs, on beds (gurneys), sitting and walking. If someone was hooked up to an IV, the pole went with them. I was usually outside for 10-20 minutes. I would have stayed longer, but it was hot.

Shabbat in hospital is excruciatingly boring. Doctors and staff are kept to skeleton crews. However, on Shabbat, volunteers deliver meals to the patients so that we have festive food. Last Shabbat, one of the other patients (a rabbi) and I, along with his friend, had a splendid mid-day meal, complete with Kiddush and Dvar Torah. We were together only 45 minutes, but it was one of the loveliest Shabbats ever!

Upon discharge, I was released to take the elevator downstairs and walk out by myself (unaccompanied; no wheelchair) where I caught my ride home.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARYby Joan Leb Happy New Year and welcome to the year 5777. Do you think the High Holy Days are late this year? They are exactly on time…..according to the Jewish calendar! The Torah states that on the first, tenth, and fourteenth day of the seventh month, Tishrei, there shall be a “solemn convocation.” We know these convocations as Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. Because the months in the Jewish year are 29 or 30 days long, a year comes to only 254 days. To adjust for the secular and to make sure the holidays stay in the proper season, Passover in the spring and Hanukkah in the winter, a “leap month” is added seven times in nineteen years. That’s why we sometimes welcome the New Year early in September or later in October.

Leave it to our Social Action Committee and our many willing volunteers to make an average luncheon into a great barbecue day for the homeless and those barely surviving with little means. Chair of the Social Action Committee at Temple, Myron Wollin, said that this year the kitchen was extraordinarily busy making food to feed over 200 guests at the Drop-In Center nearby the First Congregational Church and served by 28 cheerful and caring volunteers.

While more volunteers would have helped, it still turned out to be a highly successful venture as indicated by the letter accompanying this story. In addition to a delicious meal, the volunteers handed out socks and clothes provided by generous Temple members.

The next event to be held at the Drop-In Center will be our annual Christmas dinner. We hope to have many more volunteers to help with this heart-warming endeavor when we truly follow the Jewish precept and example of tikkun olam.

For any member of our congregation who would like to join us, our meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. except this coming October when it falls on Rosh HaShanah. Therefore a new date will be forthcoming. For information call Myron Wollin.

Jon moved to Long Beach from Playa Del Rey 7 years ago, when his wife, Jeanne's, very aggressive case of multiple sclerosis required that she be placed in a skilled nursing facility here, in Long Beach. Jon had stopped working for the previous 11 years to care for Jeanne at home. Since he planned to visit with her on a daily basis, it made sense to relocate to Long Beach.

Jon grew up in Cleveland, OH, where his family belonged to Park Synagogue, which, at the time, was one of the largest Conservative congregations in the United States. However, Jon has been a member of the Reform movement for more than 30 years. For the past three years, he has also studied Mussar, a particular spiritual practice within Judaism.

Regarding Jon’s decision to join Temple Israel, he comments, “how can you be Jewish in Long Beach and not hear about Temple Israel?” Since joining Temple Israel, Jon hasn't wasted much time; he is already a member of the Ritual Practices Committee and the Membership Committee. Jon is friends with so many of our Congregants!

Jon is the Founder and Publisher of Long Beach Jewish Life, a monthly digital magazine. He is also a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Progressive MS Alliance, a global research consortium dedicated to speeding up the development of treatment for progressive multiple sclerosis by removing scientific and technology barriers. He is a member of the Planning Committee for the CCEJ's Annual Interfaith/Intercultural Breakfast. He is also a proponent of public television, and serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the KCET-TV Community Advisory Board.

In his spare time, Jon loves to play in the kitchen. Cooking and mixology are two of his passions. He has hosted several mixology workshops, where attendees learn to create imaginative and fun craft cocktails. Jon has been a member of the Magic Castle for several years. His specialty is close-up, sleight of hand magic – the type that's done right under your nose! He frequently performs at private parties and events. Jon is also a fan of theater. He has studied and performed with Held2Gether, a local improv troupe; and performed in several traditional scripted plays, including playing Tevye in the JCC Community Theater's production of Fiddler on the Roof. Jon is a huge music lover. He especially enjoys Brazilian jazz and R&B.

To sum up what Jon would like from his participation in our Temple, Jon says, “I am looking to maintain and strengthen my spiritual connection to Judaism. I am also looking forward to being an active participant in some of the social justice projects that Temple Israel participates in. And I am always open to connecting with like-minded people in the Temple Israel community!”
