The long overdue upgrading of the Apiesdraai Sewerage Pump Sta- tion on the road to Aston Bay is set to become a reality in the near fu- ture. The Apiesdraai Pump Station - which services Ocean View, Aston Bay and the Marina Martinique - will be upgraded in the next eight months at an estimated cost of R14 million. Tender applications closed on April 30. The bid process will take place in May. If all goes according to schedule, this process will be fi- nalised and a contractor selected by the end of the month. Construction is set to take about seven months. According to Kouga municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Ran- dall, the upgrade is necessary to cope with the increase in flow due to recent and future housing deve- lopments. “The upgrade will see the con- struction of a second reinforced concrete pump sump adjacent to the existing Apiesdraai pump sump, as well as the installation of two sub- mersible pumps that are connected to two booster pumps on ground le- vel,” said Randall. “A second rising main from the Apiesdraai Pump Station to the in- let works at the waste water treat- ment works will be constructed, while the existing sump will be re- habilitated. The overflow pond will also be extended and the steel pipe work in the existing valve chamber will be replaced, while the existing submersible pumps will be recondi- tioned.” Furthermore, a building will be constructed to house the booster pumps, the pump’s delivery pipe manifold, the electrical switch gear and a stand-by generator. “In order to ensure that the project also stimulates local eco- nomic development, the tender re- quires that at least 10% of the con- tract value must be sublet to SMMEs and emerging contractors from Kouga,” said Randall. “At least 20 job opportunities must be created on site for the dura- tion of the contract period.” According to Randall, other sew- erage projects currently under way are the upgrade of the waste water treatment works at Kruisfontein, Weston, Hankey and Patensie. “These treatment works are also be- ing upgraded to cater for housing developments.” Join the fun run for nurses Join the fun run for nurses

PATENSIE residents can finally bid farewellto the existing bucket and septic tank systemthat is currently their daily fate.

Not only will this outdated system be re-placedbyawaterborne sanitation system, butit will also allow for the construction of 278RDP-houses in the area. With limited resources and no treatment

works of its own, the National Department ofPublicWorks donated theWasteWater Treat-ment Works (WWTW) at the prison in Paten-sie, as well as the adjoining land to the KougaMunicipality last Thursday in order for themto serve the growing needs of the community. The WWTW, which fell under the custodian-ship of theDepartment, previously served on-ly the Patensie Prison Precinct.According to the Minister of Public Works

and MP to the Kouga Municipality, ThulasNxesi, the growing municipality urgently re-quired a waterborne sanitation system to re-place the existing bucket and septic tank sys-tem. “It was established that the cheapest andmost effective option was to expand thepresent prison WWTW to serve both the pris-on and the local community. Most important-ly, thiswill improvedeliveryof services to thecommunity. ” says Nxisi.“When Department constructed the prison

approximately 30 years ago, the municipalitywas unable to provide the necessary infra-structure required for servicing the utilityneeds of the prison in terms of water bornesewage, as the town did not possess a Waste

Water Treatment Works that was capable toservice the needs of the prison. The Depart-ment, therefore decided to construct theWWTW itself. The facility has since servedthe direct needs of the prison only, currentlyhousing a population of 489.”With the WWTW in place, the construction

of 278 RDP-houses at Stuurmanskop can now

also begin in all earnest.According to Kouga Infrastructure portfo-

lio councillor Patrick Kota, now that the ne-cessary WWTW is in place, construction onthe houses can start.“Construction on these houses were de-

layed due to insufficient infrastructure, thishowever, no longer poses a problem,” Kota.

MATT McGillivray was victorious in a nail-biting finish in the RVCA Junior ChallengeJBay, winning the premier u.20 division aswell aswinninghimself the coveted entry intothe JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA to beheld at Supertubes in JBay in June.

The final day of competition started off fair-ly slowly, with a chill in the air and with thehigh tide holding the sets off the Lower Point.Waves were inconsistent, with occasionalpulses coming through. In one of the earlyheats of the day, on one of those pulses, JamesRibbink (DBN) scraped into an absolute bomband rode it all the way through to the inside, picking up a score of 7.5, winning the secondu.12 Boys semi and earning his spot into thefinal. In the u.20 Girls semi number two, a fierce

paddle battle between Chanelle Botha (Warn-er Beach) and Gina Smith (JBay) coupledwith a sudden flurry of waves saw Gina turnthe heat around and go from fourth place tofirst place, before finally dropping into sec-ond place and advancing into the final alongwith Olivia Brand (Umdloti). Before the finals hit the water it was time

for the Nixon Weird Board event. Eight surf-erswere commissioned to each shape a ‘weirdboard,’ an unconventional board shape anddesign, for this fun event. Shapers who deliv-ered boards were Thys Strydom, Dutchie,Eric Stedman, Simon Fish, Glen Row, DavidStubbs, Anton Butler and Glen D’Arcy. Someserious fun ensued in the tiny but reelingLower Point waves, with Richard Kidd andYorkVan Jaarsveldt both being declared heatwinners, each taking home a Nixon BlasterBluetooth Speaker as reward. In the u.10 Boys final it was Christian Ven-

ter who came out firing, and picked up an ear-ly lead. James Ribbink was hot on his heels, however, and soon overtook Christian. OnceJames had the lead, he didn’t let it go and re-mained the heat winner all the way through

I didn’t hear what the score was, but I knewthat it was a decent score.”His second score was a 6, and combined

with his earlier score of 4.75 saw the Undlotisurfer with a heat total of 10.75 out of a possi-ble 20 points, with Jordy Maree in second.Jake Elkington was in third and AdinMasen-camp in 4th.The Smith family was well represented in

the u.20Girls final, with EmmaandGina duk-ing it out with Olivia Brand and Jade Mets.TheSmith’smade it one-two,withEmmawin-ning convincingly and with Gina in second.Jade Mets came in third and Olivia Brand infourth.

McGillivray threw caution to the wind inthe u.20 Final, laying it all on the line by goingfor some big aerial moves and pulling themoff successfully. His first such move, a bigforehand air reverse saw Matt score 6.75 andgo firmly into the lead.MaxArmstrong foughtback hard but ended up in the runner-up spot, withDylan Lightfoot in third and Slade Prest-wich in fourth.“In the beginning everyonewas sitting very

far up the point, so I tried to come a bit lowerdown the point to get one or two to start off,”said Matt of his strategy in the final. “Localknowledge definitely helps in these condi-tions.”

to the final siren. Viviers Strydomwas in sec-ond, Christian Venter ended up in third andAlex Townsend was fourth.Ribbink stayed in the water for the u.12

Boys final, and played a patient game, sittingwide and waiting for the good set waves. Hisstrategy paid off and he won this division aswell, beating York Van Jaarsveldt, Tide-LeeIreland and Sebastian Baurield into the mi-nor positions.“The waves were a little bit onshore out

there, but it was really fun,” said Ribbink ofthe conditions. “I wasn’t sure how I had done, but in the middle of the under twelve final Iheard that I had won the under ten final andI was stoked. In the under twelve final I decid-ed to sitwide. Thewaveswere breaking reallyfast on the inside and then they were slowingdown on the outside and that’s where youcould get some good scores, so I went and satthere and got two good ones.”Sophie Bell was the outstanding surfer of

the u.14 Girls final. She scored an 8.5 pointsout of a possible 10 points for her highest sco-ring ride, backed it up with a 5.75 for a clearvictory, and left all the other surfers in thefinal needing a combination of waves to catchher. Finn Musson was second, Kirsty McGil-livray third and Zoe Smith was fourth. The only international surfer in the event,

SebastianWilliams, surged into an early leadin the u.14 Boys final, despite a strong pushfrom Koby Oberholzer. Sebastian, who is aSouth African who grew up in Mexico, re-mained in the lead with some fast and light-footed surfing in the final, with Koby, AngeloFaulkner and Saxton Randall filling up theminor placings.New kid on the block Bevan Willis surfed

a powerful and explosive U16 final againstsome fierce competitors to take the win withrelative ease. “I picked up a decent wave nearthe beginning of the heat, and then I hassledthe guys a bit,” said Willis of his strategy.“That wave at the end was a really good one.
