Certain non-profit organisa- tions say this is the question most likely to fuel their protest against the con- struction of the nuclear energy plant in Thyspunt. With the proposed multi-billion rand nuclear plant just kilometres away from PE and sur- rounding towns, three NGOs have come out strongly against the government’s plans, say- ing that there are no proposed emergency evac- uation measures, amongst other concerns. One of these NGO’s, NoPEnuke, will host two public sessions on August 16 and 19 in Port Elizabeth, highlighting the variety of risks di- rectly and indirectly connected to nuclear- powered energy. Tony Stott, Eskom Senior Manager, said that Eskom “wants to put it on record that there is no final decision that has been taken on whether a nuclear power station will be built at Thyspunt,”. “The Environmental Impact Assessment is in progress – three sites are being investigated in the EIA process. Currently the draft Envi- ronmental Impact Report identifies Thyspunt as the preferred site. To date, no fatal flaws have been identified in the EIA. A revised draft EIR is expected to be issued later this year or early next year for public comment,” said Stott. According to Stott, Eskom will be required to provide a nuclear emergency plan. “The Na- tional Nuclear Regulator will not issue a nucle- ar licence for any nuclear facility unless it is satisfied that a viable nuclear emergency plan has been developed and can be implemented. This is in accordance with international stand- ards and requirements,” said Stott. But NGO’s say this will not be the case.NoPEnuke and Coalition Against Nuclear

Energy (CANE) say dangers in having a plantso close to residential areas can prove disas-trous to public health and the region’s strug-gling economy.NoPEnuke, a project run by Bay Eco Voice,

is fighting against the construction of thisplantandsays theyhavestudieswhichdisputegovernment’s claim that Thyspunt would be aviable site for nuclear energy.NoPEnuke spokesperson, Lana Hunney-

ball, said they aremainly concernedwith theevacuation plan should there be radio active

waste exposure.“This plant has an array of environmentally

damaging outcomes. The sand dunes coveredby the plant are within a 100-year floodline, which makes this extremely dangerous shouldthere be any floods like those in recent years.Therearealsothestrongwindscomingtowardsresidential areas, which would mean we arebreathing in radio-active waste.”Hunneyball said their fears were mostly

about the laxwayEskomandgovernmentwerehandling the evacuation process should therebe any incidents.Cane Chairman, Mike Kantey, said the nu-

clear emissions and waste along the N2 na-tional road in Thyspunt posed serious health

risks and could irrevocably damage tourismin the region.Kantey said hewas busy preparing for “bat-

tle” against the upcoming environmental ap-proval of the nuclear facility.“Numerous organisations of nuclear activ-

ists, environmentalists, dairy farmers, chok-ka fishermen and ordinary residents havebeen mobilised to fight against the construc-tion of the nuclear facility,”said Kantey.Thyspunt Alliance head, Trudi Malan, who

is also vehemently opposed to the nuclearplants construction in the area, said, “Our fo-cus is on the Environmental Impact Reportand not necessarily on the choice of electrici-ty generation. As a community we need to en-

gagewith the effects that amassive industrialdevelopment like the proposed developmentat Thyspunt will have on the area during con-struction and years later.”According to Stott the Environmental Im-

pact Assessment is in progress – more than25 specialist studies are being undertaken aspart of this EIA, including studies on agricul-ture and marine impacts.“To date, no impacts that cannot bemitigat-

ed have been identified in these studies. A re-vised draft EIR is expected to be issued laterthis year or early next year for public com-ment,” said Stott. The publicmeetingswill take place atEliza-

JasperLouw,A.P.vanWyk se ou gastehuis in ’n vrolike kuns enkunsvlyt winkel, asook ’n intieme eet- enbymekaarkomplek omskep.

A LOCAL oral hygienist will attend a prestig-ious international symposium that will beheld for the first time on the African conti-nent.Jeffreys Bay oral hygienist Liesl Barnard of

JBay Dental Studio, has won a trip to the 19thInternational Symposium on Dental Hygiene(ISDH). The Symposium will take place inCape Town fromAugust 14 to 17 where almost600 delegates from 19 countries will gather toshare the latest oral health techniques, pro-ducts and research.

“I feel extremelyprivileged tohavewon thisprize,” said Barnard. “I intend to look, listen, learn, catch-up with friends and colleaguesand check out all the exciting exhibitions.”Barnard is one of six dental professionals

from South Africa and Namibia to have wonan all-expenses paid trip to the ISDH courtesyof IVOhealth and Sunstar GUM.The theme of the symposium is ‘Oral health

- vital link in achieving total health’ and willhighlight the role that dental hygiene plays inhealth and well-being.

As ek ’n plan uitgedink het, het Johan dit inaksie gesit - veral as my man te besig was omte help,” sê Muller.“Ek is absoluut mal oor hierdie afdeling

van my besigheid.

ESTI STEWART

THE fourth annual Enid PretoriusProperties Women’s Day Trail Runand Walk was held once again in and

around St Francis Bay on Friday, August 9.

A total of 109 participants braved the coldrain and wind, of which 67 completed the26kmdistance and the remainder stopped af-ter 18km at the Cape St Francis Lighthouse.Kobus Joubert and Rowan Boettger joint-

ly finished first in 2 hours 7 minutes, fol-lowed by Dan Thornton in 2 hours 12 min-

utes. The first lady home was Pat Norris in3 hours 6 minutes, in second place Anja My-burgh (3 hours 26min) and third Nadia Zim-ri, just behind Myburgh. It took some of thewalkers 7 hours to com-

plete the event, as especially the last sectionwas quite technical in the rain. The young-est walker was 11-year-old Andrew Raney, who finished the 18km distance. All finish-ers commented on the beauty of the area andwhat a privilege it is to be part of this event. The route took participants through the

St Francis Golf Course, the St Francis Linksand a section of private land towards the

Mostertshoek road, from where the foot-paths along the rocky shoreline lead to SealPoint. From the lighthouse the route fol-lowed the Cape St Francis main beach andnature reserve to Port St Francis, and thefinal stretch included the Two HarboursWalk and St Francis main beach.“Due to the popularity of this scenic route

amongst trail runners, we have decided tosplit the runand thehike as fromnext year,”race organizer Eric Stewart said. “Logisti-cally it is almost impossible to make sureyour fast runners are looked after, whileyour slowest walkers finish 5 hours later.

Our sponsor, Enid Pretorius Properties, al-ways said this must be a special Women’sDay event, sowewill get back to the drawingboard and create a shorter walk while thetrail run will be the extreme event.”“Thank you to everybody who assisted on

the route, at the water points, the timekeep-er, ourmarshals andespecially all landown-ers who every year give us special permis-sion to host this event – Eskom, Derek Cook,Mostertshoek Home Owners, Jan Riegardt, the two golf courses,” race coordinator EstiStewart said.
