JEFFREYS Bay is set to become the firstWorld Surfing Reserve (WSR) in South Afri-ca, and possibly one of only a handful of surfdestinations around theworld to receiveWSRstatus.
Followingameeting ledbyworld-renownedexpert and author Professor Andrew Shortfrom Australia, chairman of the NationalSurfing Reserve in Australia, a local commit-teewill be formed to begin community consul-tation and assimilate the application forWSRstatus. The committee will include represent-atives if Kouga Municipality, Jeffreys BayResidents and Ratepayers Association(JBRA), JBU and the Nelson Mandela Metro-politan University. If successful, the shores from Secrets to Al-
batross will join Manly-Freshwater - the his-
toric birthplace of surfboard riding inAustra-lia - as the onlyWSRon theAfrican continent.Garth Ford from the JBRA, says: “The area
might be extended to include the Kabeljauwsestuary and Nature Reserve, as well as thedune and beach areas leading to the mainbeach and Kitchen Windows.“Nothing major will change, except that
these areas will be given recognition and willbe better managed and conserved with localinvolvement and participation.“We would also like to prevent the removal
of reef life from the rocks along Supertubes toKabeljauws, in order for the reef to recoverproperly for permanent growth andperpetuity.“Thewhole processwill takeup to oneyear.”WSRare ‘iconic’ places of intrinsic environ-
mental, heritage, sporting and cultural value, according to Short. The concept of WSR is forall people to be able to enjoy, understand andprotect special coastal environments of uni-
versal value of the surfing world.“Key points in the criteria are quality and
consistency of the waves, a place consideredsacred by the international surfing communi-ty, and ahistory of recognition as a prime surflocation by national and international sur-fers,” says Short.“Jeffreys Bay ticks all the boxes.”According to Kouga municipal spokesper-
son, Laura-Leigh Randall, themunicipality isnot yet in a position to comment on the impactof having Supertubes declared a World Surf-ing Reserve.“It is a great initiative, but there are both
pros and cons.We are in the process of conducting further
research, including meetings with the vari-ous roleplayers, to determine whether it is aviable option and in the best interest of theJeffreys bay community as a whole,” saysRandall.

FOR the past weeks, motorists had to duckand swerve in the pothole-ridden St FrancisStreet in Jeffreys Bay.According to Kouga Municipality spokes-
person, Laura-Leigh Randall, there is a leakin one of the main waterlines and the run-ning water is damaging the road.“This leak was to be fixed last week, but
had to be postponed as the contractor had apersonal tragedy,” says Randall.“It’s a big job to repair the leak - the water
to lower Wavecrest and Kabeljous will haveto be switched off - and a special part had tobemade. The repairswill nowbe done in twosessions - first on July 7 and then on July 14.”The water to lower Wavecrest and Kabel-
jous will be switched off from 16:00 to about02:00 the next morning on both days.“There should still be some water in the
pipes when this happens, but the water pres-sure will be very low and some housesmightfind that they have no water,” says Randall.

AFTERmonths of preparations, reggae artistand activist Jimmy Andersen - aka ChiozaKing of Africa - took the first step on his18 000km journey to Cairo.
With this journey, called Walk the Talk, hehopes tomobilize individuals and businessesto preserve and conservewater for the future.
Along the way he will hold various reggaeconcerts to raise money and awareness, aswell as support communities that need cleanwater.
According to Andersen, who started play-ing music at the age of 15, it is the smallthings, that are often the most importantthings, that are being neglected.
“I want to concentrate on the small thingsthatmake life difficult for people in need. Forexample a tap that is not working or a burstwater pipe that needs to be fixed. It is throughthese small acts of kindness that we can showour children a different way of caring,” saysAndersen.
“It is a question of changing perspectivesto begin with. After that, all the hard workstarts.
According to Andersen, there was a timethat he did not believe that this epic walkwould realise, but he just kept on going.
“At the beginning of last year, everythingcame together - the music and the people. Now, I believe so much more in the project.
He left Cape Town in January 2014, spend-ing six months in Bredasdorp and Knysna al-ternatively. FromKnysna he took the road toPlettenberg Bay, Stormsriver, Tsitsikammaand Jeffreys Bay.
According to Andersen, there is no timelimit to his journey.
“The reasons for this walk are many. Firstof all, I love Africa. The idea of walking thelength of Africa and connecting with the peo-ple, is reason enough. I want to see Africawith my own eyes and experience it myself,”says Andersen.
“It also has a lot of personalmeaning tome.My mother is from Zambia and my father aChief from Malawi, whom I have never metdue to differences in the two tribes at thattime. I would love to meet my family on thisjourney.”
Andersenwas born in Zambia, but grew upin Kenya and Tanzania, and also lived inMa-lawi, Denmark and now London.. Andersen is currently performing atO’Chorros at the Seaview Mall in St FrancisStreet, Jeffreys Bay with a special Surf RockReggae concert during the JBay Winterfestfrom July 8 - 19. Music lovers can look for-ward to energetic Rock ’n Roll and reggae inthe tradition of Bob Marley and Jimi Hen-drik.

Fanning matches up against compatriot Kai Otton(AUS) and wildcard Dane Reynolds (USA) in the openinground, while Slater will take on JadsonAndre (BRA) andFredrick Patacchia (HAW).
Reynolds, former World No. 4, will once against join
theWSL Top 34 as a wildcard at the JBay Open followinga 9th place finish at the recent Fiji Pro.
Reynolds’ allocation comes via the WSL Commission-er’s Office which cited the Californian’s incredible tal-ent, ability to lift the event’s performance level and re-cent surfing in Fiji as reasons for his selection. Reynoldswill face Mick Fanning (AUS) and Kai Otton (AUS) inround 1 of competition.
Slade Prestwich (ZAF) will complete the field afterearning a coveted wildcard entry into the event with awin at the JBU Supertrials on June 14, 2015. The Durban-based Qualifying Series (QS) surfer will battle Adrianode Souza (BRA) and Adam Melling (AUS) in Round 1.
“I have nothing to lose and will give everything I havein the J-Bay Open,” says Prestwich. “I love surfing atSupertubes and to get another chance to surf Superswithjust one or two other guys in the water is going to be real-ly cool. I cannot wait to surf against the likes of KellySlater, he’s a total legend.”
The JBay Open will be webcast live on www.worldsur-fleague.com and forms part of the annual JBay Winter-fest.

JANNIE HOUGH
Weet jy watkos whiskey? Gee daai man ’n Bell’s!
. Kwit, man, gebruik julle harspanne. ’nVerhoging vir die kragreus vir 2016 moetminstens 150% beloop. Watwou 25%! . . betaal net.
Laat ek gou my
sé sé - voordatbeurtkrag ins . . .kliek . . . ko . . .kliek . . . p . . ..Kliek. Inskop.

THE Volkswagen Rally 2015 will see the Na-tional Rally Championship competitors in ac-tion in Uitenhage and surrounds on Fridayand Saturday, July 17 and 18.
There are 12 planned stages of competitionready to challenge the teams as they aim toset the fastest times to claim victory. While the rally starts on Friday, the build-
up to the event will allow rally fans to get in-volved. Thursday evening the scrutineeringchecks will take place at Tavcor Volkswagenon theWilliamMoffett Expressway. The pub-lic will be able to attend the event, see the va-rious rally cars at their best, meet the driversand navigators, get some posters signed andtake photos with the cars and teams.“The scrutineering process is part of the
rally but has not really been considered anevent for the public,” says Joe Fourie, routeorganiser of the Volkswagen Rally.“This year that changes and it promises to
be a fun and festive highlight which will geteveryone in themood for the action to come.”OnFriday the rally startwill see the gather-
ing of teamsat theAutoPavilion inUitenhagewhere the public can enter Volkswagen’sPlace of Legends and Car at no charge and al-so meet the teams and see the cars in the run-up to the midday start.
“The final stage on Friday at Aldo Scriban-te Raceway is sure to be another highlight ofthe rally,” says Fourie. “This will be a toughstage, a combination of tar and gravel whichwill test the competitors – whilst also provid-ing excellent spectating opportunities close toPE.”Saturday will see three spectating opportu-
nities at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway(PEOTR) ensuring that rally fans get themostaction while doing the least driving distancepossible.“The Mission Road stage can be viewed
from PEOTR as well as both final stages forthe event,” says Fourie. “The last two stagesof the event are super special stages, whichmeans spectators can see two rally cars tacklethe stage simultaneously to add another di-mension of excitement to the event.”These are just some of the highlightsmotor-
sport fans can expect at Volkswagen Rally2015, with intense competition expected atround five of the national rally championshipseason.“As sponsors we have worked closely with
the Volkswagen Rally organisers to ensurethis event is easily accessible to the generalpublic – not just hardcore fans, but for anyonewho enjoys action and cars,” saysMikeRowe,Volkswagen’s Motorsport Manager.
