Nuwe hofreëlswat mediasie in alle bestrede hofgedingeverplig, tree binnekort in werking.

SOME 100 residents of Ekumnyameni in Ocean View,Jeffreys Bay have been waiting for over five years forproper sanitation despite a multimillion-rand projectlaunched to eradicate the bucket system and to erectflush toilets.

For these residents the notorious bucket toilet systemis very much a reality and flush toilets are merely adream. They are concerned about their health and saythe smell is unbearable and the flies are all over theplace, especially when the bucket is full.According to resident Nomantombi Mqanduso, more

than 100 residents have to share about ten toilets. “Attimes theKougaMunicipality doesnot empty thebucketsfor weeks,” she says.“When the buckets are full, we have no other choice

than to use the nearest bush. We fear for our safety, asthis is not a safe option.“It is a very unhygienic situation, and we are extreme-

ly vulnerable to succumb to diseases.”Another concerned resident, Nomawethu Ndziba,

says: “It is sad to know that South Africa is celebrating20 years of democracy, but still our people are forced touse toilets with no doors or roofs.”According tomunicipal spokesperson,Mfundo Sobele,

the land on which the informal settlement is situated isearmarked for formal housing in the near future.“This development will have a waterborne sanitation

system, as in the case with any formal housing project,”

says Sobele.“The residents of the area will have to be relocated to

alternative land while this work takes place. About 1 500houses will be built in the area.”.TheSouthAfricanLocalGovernmentAssociation (Sal-ga) and the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry(DWAF) committed themselves to eradicating the bucketsystem by 2006 and ensuring every person in South Afri-ca has access to a basic water supply by 2008 and a basicsanitation service by 2010. The deadline has since beenmoved to December 2014.

HELP save a life this festive season.

The festive season is synonymous withblood shortages and the South African Na-tional Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing tothe public to add blood donation to their to-do-lists before going on holiday. The appeal is for people not to leave it up

to someone else to do, but to get involved ata time of the year when it matters the most.“Weare committed to preventing anational

blood shortage; to give patients, their familiesand medical staff peace of mind this festiveseason,” says SANBS public relations practi-tioner Maryke Harris.“The aim is to collect 3 000 units of blood per

day to ensure that the demands of patientsthroughout the country can be met. The pasttwomonthsprovedextremely challengingandthe daily targetwas rarely achieved, which re-sulted in severe blood shortages nationally.”SANBS currently has a donor panel of

478 000 donors of which 390 000 are active do-nors, less than one percent of the country’spopulation.“With such a small database of regular com-

mitted blood donors, the task to collect suffi-cient safe blood becomes increasingly diffi-cult. To ensure sustainability in providingthis essential, life-saving service to patients,SANBS needs to sign up at least 15% new do-nors every day. Equally important is to retainregular donors,” says Harris.“We provide such an essential service to so

many people, but all of this is made possibleby the public.”At their annualmedia breakfast last Thurs-

day, Yolanda Bukani, a Lymphoma (cancer ofthe lymph system) patient, emphasised theimportance of blood donation.“If it was not for the help of blood and plate-

let donors, I would not be able to be here to-day. You might not think it is much, but yourdonation can truly save lives. I am livingproof,” says Bukani.SANBS will have various special blood

drive promotions over the festive season andinto January 2015 with extended hours andadditional weekend blood drives. For more information, contact the SANBS

call centre at 0800 11 9031 or visit theirwebsiteat www.sanbs.org.za.

THE South African National Blood Service(SANBS) would like to offer regular donors achance to do something extra special - becom-ing a platelet donor.Platelets are the clotting factors of blood

and play a vital role in the prevention of ex-cess blood loss. Cancer or leukaemia patients, whose platelets are destroyed by chemothera-py, benefit the most from platelet donations.Marrow and organ transplant patients, andpatients undergoing heart surgery, also relyon platelet transfusion.During platelet apheresis the blood is proc-

essed through a cell separator where theplatelets are removed and collected in a bag, while the remaining components are re-turned to your body. The platelet donations process is very simi-

lar to that of blood donation, with the follow-

ing exceptions:.Platelet donors may donate platelets once amonth, whereas blood donors may only do-nate every 56 days..The platelet donation takes between 60 and90 minutes. During this time, you can relaxon a comfy chair, while watching televisionand enjoying some refreshments..If youhandle theblooddonationprocesswithease, platelet donation will be just as easy.To become a platelet donor, visit the Port

ElizabethBloodDonorCentre atBuckinghamRoad in Mount Croix and ask one of the staffmembers for assistance.A blood sample will be taken to determine

if your platelet count is high enough. If yourplatelet count is within the acceptable range, youwill be contacted to set upanappointmentfor your first platelet donation.
