St Francis twin sisters and artists, Alvira and Alouette Ferreira, have been awarded an art residency in Lanarken,Belgium. Alouette and Alvira flew to Belgium on August 22. The sisters, selected for their oil painting artistry, arevery excited to become part of this international workshop. The two, owners of Imagenarium The Studio in PortSt Francis, are two artists out of ten from across the world to be invited. The residency starts with an initialperiod of three months, after which it could continue to be used as several international artists have been invitedto utilize the studio as a retreat. EDUPUPPETSmember Stacey Kay recentlyteamed up with the Rhino Art EC team, Da-ve Pattle and Andrew Stewart, for the rollout of their youth-art conservation initia-tive at Pellsrus Primary School in JeffreysBay.
The aim of this initiative is to gather thelargest number of Children’s Art Voices ev-er recorded in support of rhino conserva-tion and to use these “hearts and minds”messages from the youth as aworldwide callto action against rhino poaching.“I came into contact with Stacey at the Ab-
sa KirkwoodWildsfees where my daughtersenjoyedEduPuppets RhinoTale production.I thought it would be a wonderful idea to col-laborate with her to give more impact to thepresentation we do at schools.“This has proven to be a great advantage
in reiterating our message as the childrenare more focused and enjoy the interactionand participationwith the puppet,” says Da-ve Pattle.Apart from the educational presentation
the youth receive on conservation, they alsoparticipate in an art competition where thewinner receives a bicycle. The session alsoinvolves the Rhino Shout Out Challengewhere schools are recorded on film shouting
out the phrase: “Stop killing our rhinos!”Teachers of the school then nominate anoth-er school to participate in the challenge.

HE has been performing alongside the crémede la créme of South African comedians, buthe is terrified of performing in front of hishome crowd this weekend.
“I perform in front of hundreds of strangersevery night with no problem, but when I
think about being in front of my homecrowd I am very nervous – because these
are the people that know me.”Alfred Adriaan (33), up and com-
ing stand-up comedian, was bornand bred in Hankey and completedhis schooling at Andrew RabieHigh School in Port Elizabeth.He will be performing with the Go-
liath & Goliath collective in theAwehMzansi comedy tour at the Boardwalkthis weekend. Aweh Mzansi featuresAdriaan, Jason Goliath, Donovan Go-
liath, Nicholas Goliath, Richelieu Beaunoir andGlen Biderman-Pam.
“I think most people who knew me back thenwill be surprised to see that I am into stand-upcomedy. I was quite a serious youngster – veryfocused on school work, so people will probablybe wondering, ‘Can Alfred be funny?’” he said,laughing.
He is currently the opening act forMassHyste-ria running at Monte Casino in Johannesburg,where he shares the stage with the likes of come-dy heavyweights Marc Lottering and John Vlis-mas.
He hasn’t always been into comedy and it wasonly in his 20s when he attended a show of MarcLottering that his interest was sparked. “I re-member sitting there watching him, how hewalked on to the stage, the way he interactedwith the audience and thought to myself: ‘I cando this’.”
His breakthrough came after he decided hewas going to be a stand-up comedian and walked
