Feeling at home on the court . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5With more than 2 million American kids being home-schooled these days, the doors have opened for home-school sports teams, including the Lakeshore Thunder basketball squad that competes in a 15-team league including teams from Wisconsin and Illinois.
Candid camera . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10-15 From youth to adult soccer players, to high school wrestlers, to prep basketball players, to young athletes participating in a speed and agility clinic, a variety of male and female athletes are captured in colorful images making up the Top Photos section of this week’s edition of KSN @Play.
What a performance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16-17 Local soccer players dominate this week’s Top Performers, including Colton Coca of the U10 Storm FC, who scored four goals in a recent game. Others who found the back of the net three times were Oscar Flores, Tyler McKinnon and Liam Westhoff.
Taking a closer look . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 44-49 The Inside Schools and Inside Clubs & Leagues sections of this week’s digital magazine include an in-depth look at how the local schools and sports organization teams performed in their most recent competitions.
This Week’s Highlights…

More and more youth these days – 2 million as of a recent count – are being homeschooled in America. In fact, a poll conducted by the nation’s Home Education Study Institute revealed that since 2003 the number of homeschooled students has more than doubled, and that homeschooling is growing at an annual rate of 15 percent.
This means that in many homes, parents teach courses which the majority of kids learn within the walls of their local schools. A major disadvantage of being homeschooled is that the students don’t always have access to athletic teams offered as part of the edu-cational process by a conventional school.
Homeschool basketball is chang-ing all that. Players need to have at least 51 percent of their education taking place outside of a school to qualify to play on a homeschool team. Locally, the homeschool teams fall under the Lakeshore Thunder umbrella. Just like a high school, there is a junior varsity and varsity team. A girls team is in the fold as well.
Gabe Stalker benefitted from playing in a homeschool basket-ball program. Now a student at UW-Parkside, he is giving back by coaching in the program. Unlike a normal high school coach, he receives no pay as the Lakeshore Thunder’s boys varsity head coach.
“This program started in Racine 11 years ago and technically we are based out of Racine,” explained Stalker. “With all the budget cuts, Racine Unified jacked up the prices to practice at their facilities to $50 an hour. The Boys & Girls Club in Kenosha has a brand new facility and really helped us out by offering us a sweet deal to practice there, so we jumped on it.”
The Thunder plays in a 15-team league comprised of three divisions of five. The Thunder’s division is made up of three Illinois teams and a pair from the Dairy State. Players on the Thunder come from Racine, Kenosha, South Milwau-kee, Burlington, Waterford and the areas within those communi-
ties. The Kenosha pair on the team is Stalker’s younger brother, Noah, and Michael Bergmann, the latter of whom is averaging 16 points per game to go with nine rebounds. His game has piqued the interest of Carthage College.
“We don’t have an AAU team in the summer and that hurts,” reasoned Stalker. “The AAU puts the spotlight on kids who are capable

of playing in college, so we don’t have that kind of exposure. Our players have to do it on their own and that’s really a shame.”
Some have found their way to the college level. Aaron Lewis and Tom Wright, both of Racine, walked on at UW-Parkside a few years ago. Although they did not get much playing time for the Rangers, each can say they made an NCAA Division II roster.
But just how good is the Lakeshore Thunder?
“A lot of people think of us as an intramural program, but we consider our-selves very competi-tive,” said Stalker. “We will go in to play a high school team in
Milwaukee and they think, ‘It’s only a homeschool team’ and we walk out with a 15-point win. We scrim-maged Racine Prairie and Christian Life and we are right there with them.”
On Dec. 10, the Thunder took on Milwaukee Messmer, a long respected high school basketball program, and lost, 51-43, proving they can hang.
Homeschool teams are not governed by the WIAA, so they are not limited to 22 games. In fact, the Thunder is scheduled to play some 40 games this year, hopefully culminating at the homeschool national tournament in Springfield, Mo.
“Our numbers are not great,” admitted Stalker. “We have three kids who play a JV game and then
they suit up for the varsity game right after.”
With more and more kids being home-schooled, Stalker and fellow homeschool basketball coaches may not have to face such a roster-related challenge in the future.
Noah Stalker fires from long range.

To say the Christian Life wrestling team was dominant against Lake Country Lutheran Dec. 20 would be a massive understate-ment. Wrestling on the home mat, the Eagles trounced their guests, 79-0. The team also blasted Burlington Catholic Central that same night, 57-16. “The boys performed very well to-night,” said Eagles co-head coach Tim Pinter. “This is the result of a lot of hard work paying off.”
