Komets Hockey is a Kenosha staple that’s still skating strong

Although part of the “big four” of baseball, football, basketball and hockey, the latter is confined to pockets throughout the country. Some will argue Kenosha is not one of those pockets when it comes to hockey.

Don’t tell that to the 175 kids who lace up the skates with the Kenosha Komets hockey club, plus 32 more in the developmental stage, not to mention the hundreds of alumni churned out throughout the years. Now entering its 43rd season as a sports organization fixture in the community, Komet players and coaches have spanned generations.

“We have a wonderful program. There are so many benefits to being a part of this,” explained Sherry Ebener, director of promotions for the Komets. “Our season runs from September to March, so we are all together for a longer time than base-

ball, for example, because that sea-son is short by comparison. We are together through the holidays too, so it’s like having another family.”

The youngest kids in the Komets program are just 4 years old. They play through age 18; however, many of the adults who have gone through the program come back to play in a casual men’s recreation league.

No players are cutTryouts establish how many

teams are needed and at what competitive level. No one gets cut. Teams play 30 games in the Wisconsin Area Hockey Association (WAHA), facing competition from suburban Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Janesville and Madi-son. Half the games are on the road, while the other 15 are contested at the Kenosha Ice Arena. Teams vote on how many tournaments they will

participate in, which is usually two per year.

The Komets give their par-ticipants an opportunity to develop hockey skills in addition to gaining self-confidence. The club emphasiz-es good sportsmanship, leadership and a healthy lifestyle. Winning is a goal, but not the top priority.

Unlike soccer or baseball, hockey comes with added costs. Upkeep of an indoor rink can get expensive, plus the equipment is extensive. To combat the costs, the Komets conduct a series of fundraisers, including an annual golf outing and an ice-bowling event.

“We were able to dramatically reduce our fees for this year, thanks to the fundraising efforts,” stated Ebener. “Even if parents can’t afford it, we will work with them so they can get their kid on the ice because we offer a lot of options. Our phi-losophy is that people come to us because they want to play. We make sure that happens.”

Even if a parent does not want to make the initial investment, the Komets have made it easy without making the commitment. Four times per year, the club hosts a “Learn Hockey For Free” clinic. Players do not need to bring any equipment. Everything is furnished for the trial run.

All coaches with the Komets are certified. They also are subjected to background checks.Young hockey players are lining up to play for the komets.

“We keep growing because people love the sport,” said Ebener. “We’ve had parents and grand-parents come back as coaches or volunteers, even if they don’t have a kid in the program. We host a lot of activities on the rink and have a lot of people come back for those.”

The players are excited about new uniforms which are coming their way this season, courtesy of

successful fundraising efforts. The next notable fundraiser on tap is Kenosha Komets Day at the Mil-waukee Admirals. The Komets will sell tickets to the Admirals’ Friday, Jan. 27, game against the Chicago Wolves at the Bradley Center, with a portion of the ticket sales going to the Komets. The Komets are also a recipient of Kenosha Day at the Brewers.

“We have a very enthusiastic board which makes everything run well,” cited Ebener of the 15-person group. “We encourage any kid to come out and give it a try. Even if you want to stop by just to watch a game, that’s fine. There are so many friendly people involved to make everyone feel welcome.”

The Komets promote giving back to the community. In addition to their free learn to play hockey clin-ics, they have a “Go Pink” weekend in which Green Bay Packer Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler and friends come to the rink in support of breast cancer. The Komets also partner with the Kenosha Busi-ness Bureau to host tournaments throughout the season.

More information on the Komets can be found at www.kenosha kometshockey.com.
