Kingsbury Drama GCSE students were amongst the first to see a show in the Birmingham Reps newest space whenthey attended a performance by award winning jazz and hip hop star Soweto Kinch. The group attended a staged performance of Kinchs latest album, The Legend of Mike Smith, in The STUDIO,the

new auditorium shared by The REP and the Library of Birmingham.Inspired byThe Seven Deadly Sinsand DantesInferno, Soweto performed the story of Mike Smith, a young, aspiring

MC caught in a world of temptation where the boundaries of reality and fantasy collide. The show was a fantastic combination of music, animation and dance with jazz improvisation, a driving hip hop scoreand choreography from a pioneer of British Hip Hop culture, Jonzi D.The students thoroughly enjoyed the show, and afterwards were lucky enough to meet the cast. Year 7 CampMany of our new students had an exciting start to the term with an activity

camp at Cannock Chase. Following a very successful Summer School,

students had a go at activities they had not tried before, developing their

teamwork and confidence as well as having fun. Archery sessions

revealed some budding Robin Hoods, whilst a head for heights was

definitely the order of the day with abseiling, zip wire and climbing on

offer. The stacking crates activity, where students had to pile crates one

on top of the other and stand on top of the pile (secured with a rope andharness), created the most hilarity and screaming as the tall piles

crashed, Jenga-like, leaving students dangling in mid air!

The week was a huge success, with students not only experiencing newand challenging activities, but also building new friendships and workingwith teachers. I would like to thank the staff, without whom this fantasticactivity wouldnt take place. I would particularly like to thank the followingyear 11 Student Leaders; it is a privilege to work with such caring youngpeople who give their time freely to support the school:Omar Schrouder 11N, Christopher Horspool 11S,Nelly Maina 11N and Hayley O'Dwyer 11G

Some of our Year 7 students can genuinely say

that they enjoy listening to rubbish music! A

group recently attended a concert given by the

percussion section of the CBSO, as part of theStay Tuned Programme for Schools, supported

    by Deutsche Bank.

Students listened to a variety of music played on

    percussion instruments, ranging from the

traditional to the very strange. The more unusual

pieces included Stinking Garbage and Scrap

Bang Wallop performed with metal dustbins and

    Hardworking students at Kingsbury

Several Year 11 students successfully completed a work related qualification recently. The students spent a week

working with staff from Merlin Venture, both at school and at Merlins Training Centre in Castle Vale. During that time

they worked on CV preparation, completing applications, learning job search skills and interview techniques. The week

culminated in a practice interview and the students, some of whom do not have English as their first language, were

thrilled to pass with flying colours, receiving an NOCN Preparing For Work qualification.

Bradley Winter said he enjoyed the week and was pleased to gain a qualification which he can add to his CV. Joshua

Gowen agreed: I learnt interview skills and we developed our teamwork he said. The people at Merlin were really

helpful. said Peter Bourbage: The course helped our confidence, and we would love to work with Merlin again.

Jameel Essa, who has come on a long way with his English and hopes to be a journalist, said the course helped him

to understand how and where to search for jobs. Merlins Training Manager Jackie Elston was very impressed with the

boys: They worked extremely hard she said: Normally this course is delivered over a period of weeks, so for them to

complete it in one intense week was a great achievement

Well done to all the students; I am very proud of their achievement. Mrs Hartwell

played in a way they had never heard before. They thoroughly enjoyed this unique and noisy experience. Mrs Jakszta

    to be good citizens.

Year 7 took part in the launch of a year long theatre project with Big

Brum Theatre Company, in which they will create a drama piece

focusing on issues which affect teenagers. They also looked at the

issue of homelessness. Activities included: creating a rap or apoem on that theme, making musical instruments from items found

on the street, such as dustbin lids. They also created artwork

around homelessness, and set up a soup kitchen in Food

    Technology.

hopefully will now know what to do in an emergency.

Year 10 worked also worked with external providers, taking part in

Finally, Year 11 spent the day in English, taking part in a Super

    upcoming November exams.

I would like to thank all the staff and the external providers who

worked hard to create these wider learning opportunities for our
