Prof Klas Engvall, Klas Engvall has broad experiences of R&D, as researcher and research leader, within the field thermochemical conversion both from the academia and the industry. The activities cover process monitoring techniques for alkali species and tars, fuel flexibility in combustion, agglomeration problems in fluidised bed, gasification of biomass and waste, high temperature corrosion, gas cleaning and upgrading in gasification processes, reforming of tars and bio-oil, as well as catalysis and surface science in general. Klas Engvall is currently responsible for coordinating the R&D in one of the research nodes (three partner universities and 12 industrial partners) in the Swedish Gasification Centre. He is also head of the gasification research group and is today supervising 6 PhD students.

E. PhD/Post-doc project description The following projects may be issued in cooperation with industrial partners:

• Thermochemical conversion of biomass and waste. Processes to be considered are gasification and pyrolysis mainly in fluidized bed but also other conversion technologies. The work is mainly experimental but can also include process modeling, such as heat and mass transfer, chemical kinetics, etc

• Processes and systems for upgrading and cleaning of raw gas from thermochemical conversion of biomass. Focus areas are tar and bio-oil reforming and tar separation technologies. The work includes both experimental as well as modeling.

The laboratory are equipped with a number of reactors from lab- to pilot-scale, used to characterize and investigate fluid bed gasification processes, pyrolysis processes for bio-oil synthesis, catalytic tar reforming, other gas cleaning and upgrading, gas analysis and sampling, gas adsorption, simultaneous thermogravimetric and catalyst characterization.

• Research will be conducted with closely cooperation with our industrial partners including ABB and other companies in one of the following areas:

• Renewable Energy, in particular on bioenergy and solar energy

• Energy efficiency and emission mitigation: energy efficiency improvement in building and carbon capture and storage (CCS)

• Smarter modeling, optimization and control and management of energy systems: CFD modeling, dynamic and online simulation and control of power plants, industrial process and simulation tool development
