Dear Kappa sisters,
Scholarships = Possibilities. A scholarship enabled me to attend Hillsdale College, where I was fortunate enough to pledge Kappa Kappa Gamma. My affiliation with Kappa and my degree in English and business administration led me to Capitol Hill, a banking career, and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. My scholarship made all of this possible.
This year, there were 369 Kappa Scholars! Did you receive a scholarship that helped you achieve your educational dreams? Do you know of someone who was able to go to school because of a scholarship? Are you able to give the gift of education? Many donors who give to the Foundation do so because they want to pay their experience forward to the next generation of Kappas.
As you read this edition of the Foundation Focus, we hope you will be inspired by the stories and thank-you’s from both donors and Kappa Scholars. You’ll see the direct impact that a gift to scholarships has not only on the women who receive this financial assistance, but also on the Kappa sisters who make gifts to help them. The feeling of giving mutual support to a woman in her educational pursuits is gratifying, and we hope you’ll join us in feeling proud of what we’ve accomplished for our sisters, together.
Our goal is to grow the funds available for scholarships. A gift of $3,000 funds a one-time merit scholarship, $75,000 endows a scholarship in perpetuity, and any amount helps toward the goal. Please consider a gift to the Kappa Foundation for scholarships. Thank you for your support!

When Betty Dieckmann Dechert, Cincinnati, was a senior, she was asked by The Cincinnati Enquirer to give advice to high school seniors about what to expect in college. Betty’s response in 1953 is as true today as it was then: “The more one learns, the more he finds he wants to learn. College affords the opportunity to do research on many subjects and expand them. But, college life is not entirely academic. Extracurricular activities also play a role in the development of the individual. Not to be forgotten are the long-lasting friendships developed and firmly cemented during four year’s association. Thus, in college, through study, associations, friends and fun, one matures into a thinking, reflective person who is well able to accept and perform her part in our world today.” For Betty, Kappa Kappa Gamma has provided the long-lasting friendships as well as the
opportunity to help others. Together with her husband, Doug, Betty has made a $200,000 gift to the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation to permanently endow $5,000 need-based scholarships for members of Beta Rho Deuteron Chapter at the University of Cincinnati, giving preference to those who are enrolled in a STEM program.
Betty, a mathematics major and former computer programmer, and Doug, a former chemical engineer, are strong believers in the power of education to significantly impact lives. While there were many outlets through which the Decherts could have endowed a scholarship, they made this investment in Kappa because of the value Betty believes it has brought her, her family, and others through lifelong and caring friendships, opportunities for
involvement, and a network of mutual support throughout her life.
The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation offers gratitude and thanks to Betty and Doug for creating meaningful change through this landmark gift!
Kappa is an organization that champions education, and recognizing women for their academic successes is central to our values. When we support the scholarly pursuits of our sisters, they’ll be empowered to live out our Kappa values –– on their campuses, in their communities, and throughout their lives. And yet, the price of higher education today stands as a barrier to many women in achieving their academic goals. Over 70 percent of college students are in need of financial aid in order to afford a college education. And this is true of many of Kappa’s collegians, too. Beyond the stress that many college students experience, these high tuition costs lead to tough financial choices for most collegians as they balance school, campus activities, part-time jobs, and for many of our sisters, being active members of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Scholarship support from the Foundation makes a lasting and significant impact on the life of a sister. When collegians engage in all that Kappa Kappa Gamma has to offer, our organization gets stronger. The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation is committed to ensuring that the future is bright for all of our sisters, and that Kappa remains an organization that unites women to learn, grow, and inspire positive change throughout their lives.
It is always special when a donor gets to meet her scholarshiprecipient. In September 2018 on a Sunday afternoon in Michigan, Shelley England Barr McKinney met her scholarship recipient, Talya Chait. Shelley shares, “The friendships forged during my college years at the Beta Delta Kappa house have been some of the most meaningful to me. These relationships have endured for nearly 65 years! We have stayed connected through all forms of communication and have enjoyed endless times together for a myriad of reasons. There have been reunions, luncheons, vacations, parties, football games and many other occasions constructed for being together. We are a collective family story in itself. Several of my Kappa friends married fellows from the same fraternity, which created an additional bond.
“Giving back by way of providing scholarships is a way of expressing gratitude for the joy my Kappa relationships have afforded me through all these many years. Meeting this year’s Beta Delta Kappa merit recipient, Talya, at my home was indeed a special time and a great pleasure. I am truly blessed for having a wonderful Kappa experience.” Talya, a second-year dental student at the University of Michigan, shares: “I fell in love with Ann Arbor and decided to remain for another four years due to the incredible journey I had as an undergraduate student at Michigan and as a member of the Beta Delta Chapter of Kappa. Meeting Mrs. McKinney in person was a true joy. This scholarship alleviates a portion of the financial hardship of my education and allows me the freedom to spend more time on my academic pursuits.” To hear more from Talya, please visit: https://youtu.be/apoxLRpiMAw
CARISSA HERNANDES, Creighton“Your generosity has reinforced my conviction that being a Kappa isn't just for four years; it's for life. Kappa Kappa Gamma is truly an organization where women are supporting women to be the very best versions of themselves. I hope to give back through Kappa
and help other young women finance their education as you have helped me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this scholarship. It will help me to accomplish my dreams and finish my graduate degree.”

SCHOLARSHIP 2020 INITIATIVE
COMMEMORATING OUR FRATERNITY’S150TH YEAR OF EMPOWERING WOMENThe Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation plans to award a $3,000 one-time merit scholarship to a member of EVERY chapter in the spring of 2020 in addition to the over 350 scholarships typically awarded! Alumnae are invited to go above and beyond their annual giving to sponsor one of these special scholarships in celebration of Kappa’s Sesquicentennial year. For more information and to find out which scholarships have already been funded, please contact Lindsey Gale, Advancement Officer, at 614-341-2133 or [email protected]. We hope you will join this unique opportunity to express love, loyalty, and leadership!
DREW GRUNEWALD, Oklahoma State“This past year, I had the honor of being elected to serve as the President of my chapter. Through this, I have been challenged in many ways, but I believe that the rewards are always greater. The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma are unlike any other women I have ever met.
They are uniquely loyal, kind, beautiful, caring, and supportive. Receiving this scholarship would not have been possible without my loyal Kappa sisters. I want to sincerely thank you again for both your investment in my education and the tremendous role that it will play as well as your continued connection with Kappa Kappa Gamma. I hope that one day I am able to give back to the organization that has given me so much.”
LÉA KOOB, Stanford“I am truly grateful for this scholarship. My family moved to the United States from France when I was 2 years old. Both of my parents came from large low-income families. When they moved to the United States, all of their belongings fit in seven suitcases, and they
started a new life from scratch. This scholarship means the world to me as it will help my family so much and make my college education less of a financial burden for us. Your generosity and support mean so much to me and has encouraged me to work my hardest so that one day I, too, can help others achieve their goals. I am so humbled and appreciative to have been selected as a recipient of your scholarship and I am truly thankful for all that Kappa Kappa Gamma has done for me.”
