Melancholic hipsters rejoice. Your king, Connor Oberst, is heading to Sydney for a special show with the brilliant Felice Brothers.

First coming to public attention in the late 1990s with a handful of critically acclaimed albums, all before he graduated from high school, Oberst really took the world by the scruff of the neck as frontman for Bright Eyes.

Aside from his Bright Eyes output, the prolific songwriter has released three solo records as well as having other projects such as the Mystic Valley Band, the indie-supergroup Monsters of Folk and Desaparecidos.

His latest release, Upside Down Mountain, has been hailed by critics as his finest work to date, with Rolling Stone calling it “the most immediately charming record he has ever made”.

Iconic British twee indie popsters Belle and Sebastian are back with their first effort since 2010’s brilliant Write Against Love, and this time around the results on Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance are decidedly more dancey.

The whole “sensitive, misunderstood soul finding its place in an unforgiving world” thing is still here, in spades.

But it’s tempered with a palpable dance party vibe that, while it might sound out of place in the world of Belle and Sebas-tian, it actually works well, making for possibly their most expansive release yet.

Producer Ben H. Allen III, who has worked with the likes of Gnarles Bar-kley and Animal Collective, brings an extremely lush sheen to proceedings.

Standouts songs on this new album include Enter Sylvia Plath and Play for Today.

If you like films about people who are “really really good looking” then you’ll be all over this Ben Stiller comedy gem. Derek Zoolander (Stiller) is well and truly at the top of the modelling tree but when up-and-comer Hansel (Owen Wilson)hones in on his racket, Zoolander’s world is thrown asunder as evil fashion guru Mugatu (Will Ferrell) hires him.

Many people were great fans of the Edward Woodward TV show and the last pairing between director Antoine Fuqua and star Denzel Washington was the Oscar-winning Training Day. Sadly this remake is a letdown. Washington stars as a former black ops guy who fakes death so he can work at a hardware shop. All is fine until young street walker (Chloe Grace Moretz) turns up and Washington’s char-acter is waist deep in Russian gangsters.

While Melbourne three-piece Twin Ages definitely have two feet planted in blues territory, don’t go thinking these guys are pure revisionists.

The sound these guys produce is quite unlike anything doing the rounds these days, with a heady gumbo of traditional blues mixed with a heck of a lot of rock and roll and some heaver-than-hell undertones that recall the likes of Aussie stalwarts Buffalo.

Featuring two sons of members of the legendary 1980s Melbourne blues outfit

The Sensational Rocket 88s, Twin Ages’ pedigree is undeniable.

This, coupled with the blues and roots influence they grew up with in grubby inner-city venues as kids, is tangible on their latest album, Sabretooth, with heavy backbeat rhythms and vicious guitar riffs effortlessly riding alongside the more laidback grooves

Catch Twin Ages at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Saturday, February 14, alongside Speedball, Second Nation and Bloody Kids.

No-fooling soul, blues, funk, disco and rhythm and blues powerhouse Lisa Hunt will be making a welcome return to Caves Beach next month.

From starting her career in the great African-American tradition of the gospel church, to working with such big name producers as Jellybean Benitez (Madonna) and Frank Farion (Hot Chocolate, Milli Vanilli) and sharing stages with the likes of Eric Clapton,

James Brown, Dionne Warwick, Brian May, Randy Crawford, Joe Cocker, Miles Davis and Andrea Bocelli, there’s little denying that Hunt is the real deal.

Hunt is also quite in demand in this country, having worked with the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Diesel and Midnight Oil.

If you love a powerful voice, catch this soulful songtress at Caves Beachside Hotel on Friday, March 20.

With Black Friday in March just around the corner, the folks at Wallsend Diggers will be pulling out all of the stops with a special charity concert featuring one scarily good line-up.

Aside from the obligatory best-dressed competitions that are pretty much mandatory at any Black Friday celebra-tion, and more drink specials than you can poke a stick at, Wallsend Diggers’ Black Friday Party will also feature the formidable talents of two of the best live acts doing the local rounds, Cadillac and The Years.

All proceeds will be donated to the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance.

For more than four decades the word Cadillac has been synonymous with

quality entertainment, first with the award-winning Gold Cadillac and now a new six-piece band Cadillac.

Two of the original members of Gold Cadillac, Phil (Pop) Jones and Peter (Rock) Harrison plus recent members Rob Carlyon and Jason Pranevicius have been joined by two of Newcastle’s finest musicians, singer Trudy Burns and keyboard/vocalist Marty Wooster.

The Years are a rocking six-piece that leave no stone unturned when it comes to serving up the best of the best from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

The experienced line-up includes Leo Della Grotta, Lelio Rossi, Tony Rossi, Sergio Rossi, Rick DiMecola and Vera Franisci.

Given that he has sold 80 million albums worldwide, written hits for Roger Daltrey, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton and Cliff Richard, and been

responsible for one of the most danceable earworms of all time in You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, it would not be a stretch to think of the Grammy award-winning Leo Sayer as an aloof artist type.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

“I can go shopping at my local Coles and not be paranoid about it,” an affable Sayer told TE down the line from his Port Lincoln hotel room.

“I guess that, for the most part, I haven’t succumbed to that whole ego thing.

“It’s much more important to me to be recognised for my work than my hair,” Sayer laughed.

“I really am a slave to songwriting and, for me, it’s more about challenging myself rather than fitting into any preconceived notions and I think that’s kept me rela-tively down to earth.”

Sayer will be heading to Newcastle next month in support of his latest album, Rest-less Years.

Judging by his itinerary of 30 shows from February to April, it’s going to be a very busy 2015 for the 66-year-old.

“I’ve always been a restless kind of guy when it comes to touring, I love it so much.

“When I released my Endless Flight album in 1976 [spawning two consecutive US number ones, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and When I Need You, and launch-ing Sayer into the stratosphere], I called the tour the Endless Tour and, in a way, it’s been going ever since.

“But it’s so nice on this tour to be going pretty much everywhere, the metro-politan centres and places like Thirroul, Albury and, of course, Newcastle, which I love.

“It won’t only be an Australian thing either as there are plans to take the tour

over to the US and the UK, which is also really exciting.”

Produced by Sayer and engineered by Mitch Cairns - the production brains behind Russell Morris’s scintillating Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land sets - Restless Years shifts effortlessly from straight-up dance-pop to rock and roll and country, reflecting Sayer’s eclectic 42-plus-year career but never in an overly sentimental way.

Listening to Restless Years, you definitely get the sense that Sayer is an artist looking forward.

“You can’t really think too much about the past.

“I mean, you are kind of aware of what you have done previously in terms of how the new record sits in the overall frame-work.

“But you can’t really let your past influ-ence you too much because you’d never really grow.”

Like Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land, which represented a stellar return to form for Russell Morris, it looks as though the same may be about to happen to Sayer, with Restless Years recently nudging its way into the ARIA top-40 album chart; a feat Sayer hasn’t achieved since his 1983 album Have You Ever Been In Love.

“It’s really nice to be able to hit the ground running like that but it’s also important to keep that momentum going, which is why this year is going to be so restless, you have to stay in people’s minds.”

Sayer moved to Australia in 2005 before becoming a fully-fledged citizen in 2009.

He says that he fell in love with the coun-try on his first visit in the mid-1970s.

“When I was down here for the first time in 1974, I made a promise to myself that one day I would live here.

“I think I’m a good fit for Australia.“I can be outspoken, I love life and I’m

not afraid of long journeys.“The fact is, we may have a crap PM at the

moment, and we may have a government telling us to be un-Australian.

“But it’s certainly not working on me because I am Australian and bloody proud of it.”

Restless Sayer will not sit still

H aving already firmly established himself as a songwriter of note - penning tracks for the likes of

Slim Dusty, Jon English and John Denver in the 1970s - it wasn’t until the bicen-tennial year of 1988 that Mackay-born songwriter Graeme Connors really hit his straps.

His breakthrough came in the form of the album Home, a very beautifully lilt-ing treatise on the importance of place, headed by the now-iconic single A Little Further North.

Connors is hitting the road in celebra-tion of the 25th anniversary of North although, as he told TE, after years of chasing that elusive “hit”, North was intended to be his swansong.

“In a way, it’s funny to think about celebrating North 25 years later because it really was a bit of a fluke,” Connors explained.

“I was at a point in my career where I thought it was all coming to an end. I was signed to Festival Records and had toured with people like Jon English, Peter Allan

and Liza Minnelli but I had kind of failed to set the world on fire hit-wise.”

Rather than the album being a last-ditch attempt for chart success, Connors said the deeply personal album was recorded for his children.

“I really wanted to document my personal journey for my kids so I could say to them ‘see, this is what your Dad used to do’,” Connors said

Thankfully ABC Music picked up the album and now Connors is widely regarded as one of the best songwriters this country has produced.

With North frequently named one of the best Australian country albums and 14 golden guitars under his belt, it’s hard to argue with that assertion.

Connors said his Newcastle show would include all of North and a set spanning his entire career, from his Kris Kristofferson-produced And When The Morning Comes to 2013’s Kindred Spirit.

“Obviously North is the centrepiece but the second half will delve into what’s turned out to be quite a big catalogue. It’ll be an absolute ball in Newcastle.”

Catch Graeme Connors at the Civic Theatre on Friday, March 6.

Simply put, Canadian outfit Slates is a punk band from Edmonton, Alberta. Not punk in the leather, tattoos, non-descript screaming, one-minute songs and the like, just straight-up, unpretentious punk rock.

Since getting together in 2008, their stinky van has taken Slates to pretty much everywhere it physically can while a much less stinky plane has taken them to ply their trade in Cuba, Bosnia and around the Yukon territory.

Since their inception, they have released three long players and five seven-inches and their latest LP, Taiga, produced by Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Stooges, Jawbreaker) has been pricking up ears all over the place.

Now Slates are heading our way and will be playing at the Hamilton Station Hotel this week alongside melancholic punks Dead-town Nothings, ambient Canberrans Purity, fellow Canberrans and melodic hardcore kids Silver Lining and Maitland/Newcastle newcomers Young Wolf. Sounds like this could be a goer.

F or Perth-based songstress Shameem, who has just released her stirring sophomore record

Under One Sun after a relatively protracted period, the creative process is much like the miracle of childbirth.

“It’s such a relief to have the album out there and seeing it so well received,” Shameem told TE.

“It really was quite a long process. The writing began a very long time ago and, actually, some of the songs were written before my first [self-titled] album and it was all recorded in December last year, so it’s definitely a relief to have it out there.

“I kind of felt like a pregnant woman carrying this album around with me.”

Shameem said one of the reasons for the delay was that she didn’t want to rush into the “difficult second record”, and wanted to delve into deeper sonic territory with producer Rob Agostini (Rai Thistlethwaite).

“Once we were in the studio, every-thing did come together quite quickly

but we definitely took more time layer-ing sounds and trying to make it as lush sounding as we possibly could.”

With strong soul and jazz influences, the album has caused music wags to draw comparisons to soul powerhouse Alicia Keys.

The follow-up to the album’s acclaimed first single, Beautiful Soul, Under One Sun was co-written with Grammy-winning UK-based producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtardo, Olly Murs and James Morri-son).

Under One Sun is a catchy soul-pop number that sticks with you long after the last chord rings out.

“We are all members of one human race, we all live on the same planet and receive life from the same sun in the sky,” Shameem said.

“I want people to think about why it is that we treat some people differently to others, when they are all equally our human brothers and sisters, no matter where they come from, what colour they are or what they believe.”

Catch Shameem at the Lass O’Gowrie on Sunday, February 22, and the Bar on the Hill on Monday, February 23 (12pm start)

A fter taking a step away from the stage to focus on compos-ing, the Hunter’s own guitar

virtuoso Bruce Mathiske will be making a welcome return to Lizotte’s this month, making this only one of two live performances for 2015.

“At the start of last year I decided to get off the road for a little while, to take a year off to do a little composing and just to defrag,” Mathiske said.

“But I just love playing and Brian [Lizotte] asked me to play at the finale for Lizotte’s on the Central Coast because I have such a long history with the venue and we also thought it made sense to do a Newcastle show as well.”

The fruits of Mathiske’s self-imposed touring hiatus is the ambitious new album The Mathiske Suites for Guitar and Orchestra, a collaboration with the Sydney Metropolitan Orchestra and one

that represents the first time Mathiske has composed orchestral suites.

“I really didn’t know if I could do it, it was a great challenge because I didn’t really know what to expect.”

Mathiske said that after the two Lizotte’s shows, he plans to continue with his extended performing hiatus.

“It’s just really nice not to have a plan for once but I’m sure some things will crop up here and there, they usually do.

“But I’m looking forward to learning how to be great at going to the beach and walking my dog, as well as taking on a few more guitar students around the area.”

Catch Mathiske at Lizotte’s Lambton on Saturday, February 21.

TE is giving you the chance to win a copy of Bruce’s latest album The Mathiske Suites for Guitar and Orches-tra. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, February 16.

Much in the same way that Steven Speilberg’s Lincoln used the end of the civil war and abolition of slavery as the focal point of its study, director Ava DuVernay’s study of Dr Martin Luther King chronicles the tumultuous and highly charged three-month period in 1965 when Dr King led a now-iconic campaign to secure equal voting rights for African-Americans. The three-month campaign culminated in a series of marches from the small town of Selma to Montgomery in Alabama. This period resulted in President Lyndon B. Johnson signing one of the most important pieces of legislation in the history of the civil rights movement: the Voting Rights Act.

Here DuVernay and writer Paul Webb show the seemingly insurmountable obstacles and compromises Dr King had to endure for the eventual greater good while painting a deeply personal portrait of the man and the toll that the civil rights movement took on himself and his family.

If you go into Mark Wahlberg’s latest flick thinking it will be a quaint retelling of the Kenny Rogers masterpiece then you’ll be sorely mistaken because Wahlberg’s character in this riveting portrayal of a man obsessed gives little regard, if any, to whether he should “hold ’em, fold ’em, walk away or run”.

Wahlberg stars as Jim Bennett, the son of a wealthy family and a highly intelligent literature professor. When he discovers that his inheritance is not what it was originally cracked up to be, he throws caution well and truly to the wind in his secret life as a high-stakes gambler. But rather than chasing that elusive “big score” on his favourite game, blackjack, Bennett is more about self destructing, mechanically going through the motions of spinning that roulette wheel or laying down those cards as a means to hasten his own demise. Paradoxically, this is not a man who has lost all semblance of control. He is determined to destroy himself, and we’re along for the ride.

Wahlberg gives a stoic performance while the film, both thematically and through Rupert Wyatt’s (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) direction, recalls Nicholas Cage’s nihilistic masterpiece Leaving Las Vegas - substituting the vodka bottle for the craps table. John Goodman, argu-ably one of the most underrated actors of his generation, brings buckets of gravitas as the foul-mouthed loan shark Frank.

The latest over-the-top action creation from Kick-ass director Matthew Vaughn sees relative newcomer Taron Egerton star as Eggsy, a knockabout lad from a council estate who, thanks to his late father’s legacy, finds himself under the wing of Harry Hart (Colin Firth), an agent for a top-secret independent spy organisation operating out of a tailor’s on London’s Savile Row.

Unsure of his place in this elite network of highly trained gentlemen, it’s not long until Eggsy has to step up to stop a climate-conscious cyber-crook, played by Samuel L. Jackson.

This is as fun as it is far-fetched. Think bullet-proof umbrellas, solo spy missions to the edge of space, elaborate fight sequences and exploding heads.

Wallsend business owners are getting ready to paint the town red as they gear up to celebrate

Chinese New Year. To ring in the Year of the Goat in 2015,

the Wallsend CBD will come alive with Chinese culture and tradition.

Wallsend Library will play host to a range of activities and workshops for both kids and adults.

Nelson Street retailers will deck out their windows with red displays, a colour the Chinese believe symbolises fire and drives away bad luck.

On Saturday, February 21, there will be lion dancers in Nelson Street, reiki demonstrations in the rotunda and Chinese New Year specials at local retail-ers and Chinese restaurants.

Chinese New Year begins on the first day of the Chinese calendar, which this year is Thursday, February 19, and celebrations normally continue for 15 days, with festivities like dragon dances

and a lantern festival. People born in 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967,

1979, 1991 or 2003 are said to be born in the Year of the Goat.

The Year of the Goat stems from a Chinese legend in which a boy shepherd named Lei one day began losing his flock of goats because he hadn’t cared for his fences properly.

Gradually, more and more of his flock escaped until only one was left.

It was only then that Lei realised the seriousness of his situation and fixed the fence, and from then on he didn’t lose any more goats.

People born in the Year of the Goat are thought to be peace-loving, kind and popular.

Lucky numbers for people born in the year of the goat are 3, 4, 9, and green, red and purple are considered their lucky colours.

The Year of the Goat is also referred to as the Year of the Sheep or the Year of the Ram.

Famous “goat people” include Michel-angelo, Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts and Australia’s own Nicole Kidman.

The first thing about the Rickshaw Inn is that every-one in the room seemed to have a personal relationship with the restaurant and its

friendly manager Peng, who followed the Rickshaw Inn from its previous incarna-tions in Hamilton and The Junction. Having such a loyal customer base is a good pointer to being on the right track flavour-wise. The Rickshaw Inn offers an array of

Chinese and Malaysian fare that packs a huge flavour punch, up there with any of the Asian eateries in the region.

First cab off the rank was the sizzling garlic chilli chicken (15.50) which, while definitely possessing a hefty garlic hit and heat from the chilli, was not overpowering. It was a perfectly balanced dish that won’t cause tears to stream down your face and the contrasting textures from the tender chicken and beautifully cooked vegeta-bles added another welcome dimension.

Deep-fried beef with Peking sauce ($15.50) is a long-standing icon on Chinese menus and a quick, impromptu survey of Saturday night diners yielded a

resounding thumbs-up for the Rickshaw Inn’s version. Deliciously crispy, yet tender, beef was swimming in a rich, heady Peking sauce that will definitely live long in the memory, making this one of the best examples of deep-fried beef I’ve tried in quite some time.

Lastly, the Malaysian chow kway teow noodles ($15) may well have been the hero of the night. A complex dish, this Malay-sian masterpiece has so many layers of flavour, from an earthy, yet almost sweet smokiness from the beautifully cooked fresh prawns and flat noodles infused with a moreish soy and chilli-based sauce, to light, fresh notes.
