Okay guitar-heads, get ready to have your faces melted because one of the heaviest axe slingers ever, Yngwie Malmsteen, is heading our way for a night of supersonic riffage.

The Swedish born, but now US based, guitar legend is venerated as one of the founders of the art of guitar shredding. His neo-classical style and the sheer speed of his playing made him the most notable musician in the genre, and he has influenced a new era of music and guitarists alike.

But Yngwie is not known purely for the speed with which his fingers fly up and down the guitar neck. Yes, Malmsteen’s playing is fast, but there’s a crystal clarity to each of his notes that few can imitate. From his ground breaking early work with Steeler and Alcatraz, through his time along-side Joe Satriani and Steve Vai as a member of G3, to his more recent forays leading the Guitar Gods, there are few that can compare to Malmsteen.

WHAT'S ON

Having just witnessed the Stones blow the doors off Hope Estate, it seemed timely to have a little squiz at this live reissue. This is one hell of a cracking set that formed part of the band’s five-night stint at the Forum for their US tour in 1975 - their first with guitarist Ronnie Wood.

This substantial two-disc set sees the Stones well and truly in full flight espe-cially on such tracks as You Gotta Move, Tumbling Dice, It’s Only Rock and Roll and Street Fighting Man.

While not the greatest live album out there, this is a great document of the greatest rock and roll band in the world truly hitting their stride.

With the Glimmer Twins firing on all cyl-inders, this is a must for Stones fans.

To say that Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus is essential viewing would be an understatement. The way Coppola paints a starkly vivid portrait of the futility and horror of war holds as much weight now as it did when released at the tale end of the Vietnam war. Martin Sheen stars as a troubled army captain named Willard, who is sent on a dangerous mission to Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American colonel named Kurtz.

Having laid drunken waste to the Greek island of Malia in their first big screen outing, the Inbetweeners lads - Will, Simon, Neil and Jay - have Australia in their sights in this ridiculously rude and completely crude sequel.

After, the events in Ma-lia, Jay is living it up on his gap year in Australia or as he calls it - “the sex capital of the world”. He convinces his compadres to join him Down Under in an alcohol fuelled trip of a lifetime with more shenanigans than you can poke a stick at. This is undergraduate gross-out humour of the highest or-der, but there is also room in this script for a certain amount of sweetness.

The film is light on Aus-sie stereotypes, preferring instead to lampooning an-noying backpackers.

After blowing the doors off the Lass, last year, as part of Sandpaper’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Newcastle’s favourite 90s bubblegum punks, Loose, will be celebrating their own 20th year and they’re bringing some special friends with them.

Loose will perform in all their seven-piece, horn-soaked glory with original members Tess Tickle, Anna Helme, Genevieve Murray, Gilli Pepper, Steven Squelch, Amanda Roff and Mel Von

Satanberg. They will be joined by Newie hardcore “supergroup” White Male Dumbinance featuring current Hard Ons drummer, Murray Ruse, and the legend-ary psycho funk of Headbin, featuring the irrepressible Richard ‘Pucko’ Puxty. Newcastle ex-pat and former Nihilist frontman Prizey will be opening up proceedings.

Catch Loose, White Male Dumbinance, Headbin and Prizey at the Lass O’Gowrie on Saturday, December 27.

After inking a deal with US label, Spec-tra Records, earlier this year - hot on the heels of their sophomore album All the Love in the World, things are definitely looking up for Sydney four-piece Jeffer-son.

Drawing favourable comparisons to the melodic “stadium rock” sounds of U2, Snow Patrol and Kings of Leon, Jefferson have been piquing quite a bit of interest both here and abroad since their 2010

single Days are Falling hit the top ten in the pop category for that year’s Music Oz awards. Further, frontman Geoff Rana was a 2011 short-listed finalist for the APRA Professional Development Award for the song Running. The song was also selected as a semi-finalist in the ‘Pop/Top 40′ category of the 2012 Interna-tional Songwriting Competition.

Catch Jefferson at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, December 13.

San Franciscan lyrical acrobat Watsky is heading our way this week as part of his maiden Aussie tour in support of his latest album All You Can Do.

Newcastle punters will get the chance to see Watsky’s mesmerising combina-tion of humour, rapid-fire rapping, storytelling and occasional spoken word poetry along with a six-piece band.

Getting his start after winning San Francisco’s National Youth Poetry Slam as a teenager in 2006, Watsky was subsequently featured on HBO’s

Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry and spent the next four years perform-ing poetry at hundreds of universities across the US. Thanks to a breakout viral success in 2011, Watsky has been a guest on Ellen (twice), Last Call with Carson Daly, and has racked up over 200 million YouTube hits, sold more than one hundred thousand albums, and performed at numerous festivals including Outside Lands, Wireless and the entire 2014 Van’s Warped Tour.

Catch Watsky at the Small Ballroom on Thursday, December 11.

A musical revolution

While biting social criti-cism has long been a part of the culture of US hip-hop, with acts like KRS-One, Public

Enemy and a Tribe Called Quest using the medium to push the social and political boundaries, it is something that has never really been at the forefront of Australian hip-hop.

Thankfully, “controversial” rapper 360 (aka Matt Colwell) is trying to redress this balance. While his latest album Utopia features its fair share of braggadocio “party rap” (Eddie Jones, Speed Limit) it does veer into deeply personal and seri-ous territory, dealing with such topics as mental illness, depression, suicide and the underside of the music biz.

Colwell isn’t afraid to speak his mind away from the mic either, with the rapper recently generating a great deal of controversy over his comments about racism in Australia on the ABC panel show Q&A. Speaking on the show, Colwell said, “on Australia Day, you see dudes walking around with their tops off, and they’re getting on the drink and all that, and they’ve got an Australian flag wrapped around their neck. I’ve seen it so many times; like, I’ve been in a taxi where we’ve pulled up because these di*kheads have been walking across the road - they just start yelling at the taxi driver, like, ‘get out of the country, this is not your country,’ and they’re wearing Australian flags.”

The aftermath saw 360’s Facebook feed explode with Australians venting their ire at the rapper, which he told TE was a huge surprise.

“I was definitely surprised at all of the backlash - while some of it was positive, there was quite a bit of negative stuff that came out of it,” he said.

“If people were to look at my intent, basically trying to start a conversation about the inherent racism that exists in this country, they would see that I’m not rubbishing the country or the flag or anything and as I’ve said before, anyone who has got a problem with those comments is, more than likely, part of the problem.”

Colwell, who has spoken out vehemently on racism and homophobia in the past, added that the spirit of protest had always been alive in him, regardless of the issue.

“If I believe in something strongly enough, I’m certainly not going to keep quiet about it - it’s just who I am,’ he said.

With Colwell’s last album Falling and Flying hitting double platinum status and his latest Utopia recently going gold, it seems that the Oz record buying public is becoming very well acquainted with who 360 is.

He said that, after the success of Falling and Flying, while he did feel some pres-sure to replicate its success on Utopia, it was more about building on what he had accomplished for his sophomore release, both sonically and thematically. So he hooked up with producer Styalz Fuego (who co-produced Falling and Flying with M-Phazes) and they went to work.

“Yeah, there was a lot of crazy success around Falling and Flying, success that

MUSIC

If I believe in something strongly enough, I’m certainly not going to keepquiet

360CAMBRIDGE HOTELTHURSDAY, JANUARY 15

was kinda out of the blue,” he said.“With Utopia, I felt like the aim was to

make an album that was the next level in every way, so I guess that pressure was more put on by me to create something, I guess, bigger.

“So there was a hell of a lot of work involved with me and Styalz and we also had some help from a producer from Los Angeles called Lifted X Ryan who is signed to Kanye West’s label and has produced some tracks for Kanye so it was great to get that US perspective on things as well.”

Despite the fact that Utopia has been doing its thing since June, demand for

the album is still at an all time high as evidenced by the fact that 360 will be hitting up a slew of regional centres (including Newcastle) in the New Year on yet another leg of the Utopia tour.

“It’s gonna be mental and there’ll be a great cross-section of stuff from the new record and a bunch of old stuff too.”

“I’d like to say, as well, that I’ve had people come up to me after a show, who weren’t fans saying, ‘oh, I get it now,’ after seeing the live show. So, if you’re not into 360, still come along, you might just be surprised.”

Catch 360 at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday, January 15.

Here’s one that’s sure to have the young and young at heart braying with delight.

The iconic Paddington has finally made his way to the silver screen.

A young Peru-vian bear with a passion for all things British

travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Padding-

ton Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘please look after this bear. Thank you,’) and offer him a temporary haven.

It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Ben Wishaw, Michael Gambon, Peter Capaldi, Imelda Staunton, Matt Lucas, Julie Walters, Hugh Bonneville.

If you found yourself guffawing along with abandon to the politi-cally incorrect laugh fest Horrible Bosses, well you’ll feel right at home with the next instalment. Fed up with answering to higher-ups, mates Nick, Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launch-ing their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desper-ate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

Cast: Jenifer Aniston, Jason Bate-man, Jason Sudekis, Charlie Day.

HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

It had the potential to be a cinematic epic of Biblical proportions but Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings is just another forgettable popcorn blockbuster.

Despite its all-star cast - Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Edgerton as Rhamses, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley - the performances are seriously luck-lustre. John Tuturro as the ageing Pharaoh, Seti, is the only character that grabs you in any way and he dies not long into the piece.

For what is supposed to be the story of a man struggling to come to terms with his faith and trust in God, there’s no emotion to be found.

If you must see this film, see it in 3D on the biggest screen you can find. That way you just might enjoy the admittedly impressive spe-cial effects and battle scenes - this films only saving graces.

As for me, I’d say give this one a wide-berth. If you want to see the story of Exodus on screen, your best bet is Dreamworks’ 1998 animated feature the Prince of Egypt.

If you’ve caught even a couple of minutes of either TV show on which this film is based, you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Paul Fenech’s latest big screen outing - more low brow and politically incorrect humour than you can poke a stick at.

While certainly not for everyone, Fenech’s brand of humour is akin to that of Chris Lilley (Summer Heights High et all) - while the execu-tion may not be as finessed, the social satire, pointed directly at bogan culture, is just as sharp. The plot is wafer thin - pizza pusher Bobo (Jon Boxer) opens a new Pizza joint in the crime conscious suburb of Sunnyvale and rehires all of the old crew from the original show. Problems arise when Bobo’s domineering Mama (Maria Venuti) uses council connections to start a scheme whereby the local unemployed receive their dole in the form of food vouchers. This doesn’t go down well with the residents of the Sunnyvale, especially permanently aggrieved single mother Shazza (Elle Dawe). Sure, its remarkably cringeworthy in some places but there are some funny moments to be had amid the maelstrom of chaos.

HORNET SYDNEY JUNCTIONHOTEL SATURDAY,DECEMBER 13

Hornet are a high energy, guitar-drive rock group, laying down a retro rock-influenced sound with a modern twist. Hornet′s successful style is simple, combining infec-tious tunes that girls love to dance to, with in-you-face rock.

Blowing the roof off every room east-coast Australia has to offer for the best part of a decade, Hornet have released five albums under their original music moniker The Humm, experienced three top-10 singles in the Australian charts, and sold in excess of 10,000 units nationally.

They′ve toured with Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus and Baby Animals, and Rod Stewart. The band gained exposure on numerous tele-vision programs in Australia includ-ing Rage, Video Hits, MTV, Channel V and Good Morning Australia. An impressive list of achievements for an independent band.

On the covers scene, Hornet repeatedly wows audiences with their on-stage energy and great mix of tunes, covering AC/DC, The Beatles, The Doors, The Easy Beats, Green Day, Jet, Powderfinger, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Oasis, The Living End, The Strokes and many more. Be sure to check out the band′s massive song list.

For close to 20 years, the Eastern Tiger Restaurant has been wowing Lake Macquarie and Newcastle diners with its mouth-watering buffet

menu - the highlight of which long being an alluring choice of Chinese fare.

Having recently changed hands (with the previous owner’s son Kent Au staying on), the new owners certainly haven’t missed a beat if my dining experience on the weekend was anything to go by.

On arrival, my dining partner and I were greeted by a line-up of hungry diners that snaked its way around the club. A good sign.

Upon entering the jam-packed dining room a cursory glance to the bain maries overflowing with a cornucopia of roasts, salads, pastas, Chinese delights, desserts, fruit and sou, we realised we were not going to leave this place hungry.

Saturday is seafood night at Eastern Tiger and the king prawns, plump oysters and sweet and juicy crab, were gobbled up by the plateful. While lesser eateries might cut corners, Eastern Tiger presented us with a dazzling array of super fresh seafood that almost demands repeat visits.

Aside from the seafood, this buffet has basically anything you could crave for your Saturday dinner - pasta favourites, Asian delights (the honey chicken was just delicious), the traditional style roast and veg (the roast beef with a bitey pepper sauce was a definite standout), but hidden away in the BBQ section was some of the most delicious pork belly I have ever encountered - incredibly crisp, crackly skin and oh so tender

If you still have room for dessert, you’d

do well to try their delicious pav, or one of their multitude of cakes, while the kids will be more than satisfied with the ice cream bar.

If you’re looking for some top-quality family dining with great value for money, the Eastern Tiger Restaurant should defi-nitely be on your “to do” list.

ABC4Kids preschool show juggernaut Giggle and Hoot will be winging its way to Newcastle in the new year for an all-

singing, all-dancing extravaganza with more than a few surprises thrown in.

In what is shaping up to be somewhat of a Big Day Out for tiny tots, Jimmy Giggle and his best friend, the mischievous Hootabelle will be brining along the legendary Bananas in Pyjamas and Zap, Mimi and Jango from the Hoopla Doopla crew and Giggle told TE that the prospect of a bit of summer silliness in Newcastle was an exciting one.

“I am very much looking forward to it,” he said.

“It’s great getting out on the road and getting that live feedback - it’s something that’s missing doing television.

“But, people can expect a whole lot of silliness and a lot of the favourite songs from the show like one of my favourites The Funky Owl. It’s basically a really good snapshot of the TV show except here when you yell out, we may just yell back, not like on the TV.”

With more award nominations and wins than you can poke a stick at, there’s no denying that Giggle and Hoot is following in the footsteps of fellow ABC

icon The Wiggles and Giggle (or Jimmy Rees to the taxman) said he believed the reason for the show’s success was it provided a healthy dose of good, old fashioned fun.

“The show is made with love and it really follows the classic children’s entertainment line where it’s all about fun. While there is certainly a place for educational kids’ shows sometimes it’s good, after a hard day of learning to put your feet up and have a bit of a giggle and a bit of a hoot,” he said.

“Also, we’re really conscious of meet-ing the kids on their level and not talking down to them which I think also helps.”

While Giggle conceded that children are definitely the harshest critics, he said he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“They can be a very touch crowd as they are so brutally honest but, it really does light up your day being a able to bring a little bit of fun into these kids’ lives - it’s awesome.”

Catch Giggle and Hoot and Friends at the Civic Theatre on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18.

TE is giving you the chance to win a family pass (2x adults and 2 x children) to Giggle and Hoot. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with “Giggle and Hoot” in the subject line by no later than 5pm on Monday, December 15. Winners will be notified by phone.

Middleton getting in the swing of things

When Darren Middleton hits the links with a slew of stars of film, television, political, musical and sporting

persuasions at the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic at Cypress Lakes next weekend, don’t be surprised if the word “fore” is on the tip of the former Powderfinger guitar-ists tongue.

“It’s funny because I actually pulled the clubs out of the closet today and as soon as I finish talking to you, I’m hitting the course to start working on my swing,” Middleton told TE.

“Although, don’t be surprised if I put in an appalling effort, although I’m okay with that because it’s all a bit of fun and it’s for a good cause [The Jack raises money for diabetes prevention on the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation],” he said.

Aside from taking on the likes of Some-thing For Kate’s Paul Dempsey and Clint Hyndman, House Husbands stars Gyton Grantley and Rhys Muldoon and sporting legends Wally Lewis and Luke Priddis, Middleton will be heading back to the region in the New Year, teaming up, in

six-piece band and working it all out now,” he said.

“It will be basically us, with no support, playing on each others songs and I’m really excited to be able to play Transitions with the six-piece band - to be able to hear all of the extra bleeps and beeps that are on the album. Guy’s record is really layered as well so it’s going to be great to hear those songs totally fleshed out.”

With Middleton well and truly in solo mode these days, he said that coming from the biggest band in the country to essentially start again from scratch did present some challenges.

“It wasn’t so much about coming from such a big band, I mean that’s part of it, but it was more about discovering who I was as a performer and getting used to being the centrepiece of everything - something that Bernard [Fanning] always took care of,” he said. “I’ve found that I really do love it - I’ve discovered I can get quite chatty on stage, which is a bit surprising. I suppose you could call me a troubadour.”

Darren Middleton will be at the Jack Newton Celebrity Classic at Cypress Lakes Resort from December 15 - 17. Middleton will also be joining Guy Pearce at Lizotte’s Lambton on Thursday, Febru-ary 19.

music mode, with good mate Guy Pearce at a special show at Lizotte’s in February.

With Middleton still riding high on the back of his cracking solo effort Transitions and Pearce dipping his toe into musical waters with his surprisingly accomplished

debut Broken Bones, this promises to be one hell of a show.

“To be honest, at this stage we don’t really know what form the show will take at this stage - Guy and I are good mates and we’re in the process of putting together a

but, we have matured a lot as artists so we’re moving into this naval gazing art rock territory” he said. “We’ve defi-nitely become more popular with the ladies - we’ve had to buy capsicum spray because while we might want to kiss a thousand ladies, our lips just can’t cope.”

With their ridiculously dance-able slice of rock and roll - the sophomore We Are Groovy

Boys EP - still fresh in our minds, Melbourne’s funnest two-piece, The Stiffys, are back with a stomping new single - Kick Another Flip. The boys are out on the road to celebrate and if you know the Stiffys, you’d know to be prepared for some hot boogie-boarding rock action.

“It’s bloody pumping actually,” guitarist Jason Leigh told TE. “We’ve been amping up the boogie boarding which used to only happen in one song -honestly it’s like a swimming pool now - everyone’s loving it. We’ve also been doing this great thing called a “shoey” which I think was invented in Newie where you pour booze in a shoe and drink it while your mates yell ‘shoey, shoey, shoey’, it’s pretty awesome.”

Leigh said the new single and soon-to-be-released EP Art Rock represented a quantum thematic shift for the two-piece.

“Up until now, the Stiffys were pitched for commercial success with our highly accessible band name and radio friendly song topics about doing it with girls,

Christmas sickfest

When Grinspoon front-man Phil Jamieson takes to the Cambridge stage in solo mode later this month, don’t

expect it to be a set of acoustic versions of the ‘Grinners’ greatest hits.

“I really can’t do that kind of thing,” Jamieson told TE.

“A lot of those Grinspoon songs are liter-ally impossible to re-create on an acoustic guitar.”

Jamieson is teaming up with Scott Russo, good mate and frontman for Cali-fornian pop-punkers Unwritten Law for the pre-Christmas acoustic double-header run and while he was tight lipped on what would comprise his set, he did say that there would be a few festive touches.

“Yeah, I think I’m gonna learn how to play some Christmas carols, well, not carols per se, but there are a lot of really great Christmas songs from the 1950s, you know, back when pop stars used to do Christmas songs.”

Jamieson said he and Russo first met when their respective bands played

STEPHEN BISSET

MUSIC

together on the Australian leg of the 1999 Vans Warped tour and have remained friends ever since - each contributing songs to each other’s records.

The pair played a couple of acoustic shows earlier this year when UL were out here for the Hits and Pits festival and as they were so well received, they figured they’d give it another crack.

However, Jamieson said it was sheer pragmatism that led him to set foot into solo territory.

“I was kind of forced into it,” he said.“When Grinspoon went into hiatus in

December last year, I basically sat around doing nothing but annoying my wife,” he said.

“I mean, my resume isn’t all that great - I can’t really rock up to Bunnings or Bakers Delight to ask for a job because all I’ve ever really done is music so I ended up back there. When UL toured here I offered to tour manage them which obviously would have been a really bad idea so we decided, Scott and I do a couple of shows together and they went really, really well so we thought we’d keep that magic happening.”

Catch Phil Jamieson and Scott Russo at the Cambridge Hotel on Sunday, Decem-ber 21.

LOST PARADISEPEATS RIDGEDEC 30 - JAN 1

If you’re looking for chilled-out NYE hangs, this could be just the ticket.

Lost Paradise will be on at Glenworth Valley, Peats Ridge from Tuesday, December 30 to Thursday, January 1. For more information and tickets, visit lostparadise.com.au

With more and more things vying for our hard earned money and attention over the

summer period, the choice of how you’re going to see in 2015 is now even harder thanks to the Lost Paradise festival.

The brainchild of the folks behind this year’s Lost Picnic fest in Sydney, Lost Paradise is a three-day extravaganza set in the ridiculously picturesque surrounds of Glenworth Valley, just down the road at Peats Ridge.

Aside from the requisite music, organ-isers have promised quite an ‘out of the box’ festival experience - expect crowd-funded art installations in collaboration with Pozible, a Shambhala area hosted by internationally renowned acro-yoga collective Yoga Beyond, a carefully curated array of food, and of course a spread of luxury glamping options, including the option to arrive by chop-per. Swag.

That’s all very nice, but what about the lineup? Well, try this eclectic one one on for size. Boy and Bear(pictured), The Preatures, AlunaGeorge, Sylvan Esso, Badbadnotgood, Pond, Allday, Touch Sensitive, Elizabeth Rose, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Delta Riggs, Ben Pearce, Midland, Banoffee, Dreems and more acts than you can poke the proverbial stick at.

GIVEAWAY

If you need an exhaustive document of the arts and polit-ical-infused rock scene that was Melbourne in the 70s - a scene that gave us the likes of Paul

Kelly (pictured with his band The Dots), Joe Camilleri, Stephen Cummings, Red Symons and Shirl Strachan, look no further than (When the Sun Sets Over (Carlton).

Taking it’s title from the Skyhooks song, this is a deluxe, two-disc col-lection that includes such gems as Daddy Cool covering Skyhooks in 1974, unreleased studio reocrdings from Paul Kelly’s first band The High Rise Bombers, a pre-Sports Stephen Cummings demo and much, much, much more. The collection also comes with a lavishly illustrated 52-page booklet featuring musings form the likes of Paul Kelly, Martin Armiger, Jane Clifton, Johnny Topper and Jen Jewel-Brown.

Snapshot of a scene

To coincide with the release, Festival Records are also releasing expanded editions of the classic albums by two of the scene’s best-loved bands of the late 70s and early 80s - the first two albums by the Sports - Reckless and Don’t Throw Stones and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons’ breakthrough 79 set Screaming Targets. All albums are long out of print and the reissues also feature a slew of bonus material mak-ing them a must for any afficianado of Australian rock and roll.

TE is giving you the chance to win a pretty awesome pack containing the (When the Sun Sets Over) Carlton al-bum and the re-issues of Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons’ Screaming Targets and The Sports Reckless and Don’t Throw Stones. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with ‘Carlton’ in the subject line, by no later than 5pm on Monday, December 15.
