Founded in 1897 as a land grant institution, Langston University is the only Historically Black College/ University (HBCU) in the state of Oklahoma. The University has a rich history of growth and development that emphasizes the perseverance and dedication of its administration, faculty, and students.
Langston (LU) has both a rural and urban mandated mission with campuses in Langston, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa. The mission is to provide quality post-secondary education to the diverse learners of Langston, ultimately leading to professional competence and degree completion.
Building on its history as an institution established to “instruct both male and female Colored Americans,” Langston continues to educate African-Americans while expanding its purpose and mission to include a more diverse student body.
The University operates under the guidance of the Oklahoma State University/A & M Board of Regents. The urban campuses in Tulsa and Oklahoma City also are directed by a board of trustees. In 2012, Dr. Kent Smith, Jr. joined the Langston family as its 16th President.
The University is accredited through the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Individual programs are accredited through the: American Dietetic Association, Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation, Oklahoma Board of Nursing, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, National League for Nursing, Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, American Physical Therapy Association, and the Council on Rehabilitation Education.
Undergraduate students are admitted to LU based on their high school grade point average and class rank, or based on their score ranking on the American College Testing (ACT) Program. In addition, students must complete the required units of study for high school students as designated by Oklahoma State Law. Graduate student admission is based on specified program requirements in the fields of education, counseling, or physical therapy.
Six schools house the degree programs of Langston: Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Nursing and Health Professions, and Physical Therapy. A total of 47 undergraduate and 9 graduate degree programs are offered at LU. Currently, the top five majors are business administration, nursing, biology, rehabilitation counseling, and criminal justice.
