These proposed accent colors will pick up hues found in the surrounding environment. The unfinished wood exterior will better relate the building to both the natural and built environment. This structure is being constructed upon agricultural land, and this proposed design pays tribute to that history.

There are a number of trees that are being removed in the construction process that have strikingly beautiful wood. These trees can be resalvaged from on site and incorporated as biophilic design elements, such as a light fixture. The use as a light fixture is meant to mimic sunlight shining through the tree canopy in a natural forest.

Construction Steps

Entering through porch

Plan view of ceiling

Saw through the trunk of the tree in order to create a cylindrical piece, about 1.5 inches thick

Cut a hole in the center, with a slightly larger circumference than the space for the light bulb

Treat the cut wood to preserve it, or leave it untreated, depending upon preference

Align the holes, and then drill the fixture into the ceiling, allowing the light to shine

These paint colors, made from earthborn clay pigments, align with the principles of biophilic design. These “earthtones” evoke a feeling of being in nature, in a sensory rather than literal manner by mimicking the coolness, and warmness of the surrounding environment. These paint colors, combined with stained concrete and wood flooring, and resalvaged wood ceiling panels, will better connect the interior with the surrounding environment.
