Workshops and Classes

Master Class on Technical

Challenges in Tapestry by Elizabeth Buckley Mar 22, Apr 26, 10-3:30

These Master Classes focus on a range of technical challenges in tapestry: be it weaving smoother curves, better under-standing hachures, or color blending to achieve the effects of transparency, grada-tions, or three-dimensional form. Strong emphasis will continue to be on design, exploring different ways to translate con-cepts and ideas into tapestry, addressing how to synchronize technique and design. The classes are formatted to provide time at home in between sessions to weave and to develop ideas generated during each class. Each class will include design explo-rations, group critiques & discussions as well as individual attention at the loom. For more information, or to register, email elizabeth@elizabethbuckleytapestry artist.com

Workshop on The Visual

Heartbeat: Creating

Movement in Tapestry by Elizabeth Buckley

May 3-6, 9:30-3:30

Rhythm is not only integral to the world of music and dance, but also to effective tapestry design. Repetition of motifs in layers helps to create the sense of visual movement as well as three-dimensions. The act of weaving in itself is filled with rhythmic gestures. In this workshop, we will explore different approaches to visual rhythm through the use of repetition, progressions, gradations, and con-trast in shape, line, value and color. We will look at how use of the techniques themselves also can contribute to a sense of movement. These underlying principles behind rhythm will help you go beyond the flat background to creating a dynamic flow. For more information, or to register, email elizabeth@elizabethbuckleytapestryartist. com.

Warping Back to Front by Cathlena Burr

March 20-21, 10-4

This is a great method of warping for long, dense or very fine warps as the threads are not dragged through the reed and hed-dles as they are rolled on. Students will need a portable loom, warping board, rad-dle, warping tools and yarn for a warp. If you do not have any of these, I have ac-cess to all the parts. I am available for pro-ject consultation. You will warp and dress the loom in class and probably get started weav-ing, but most of the weaving will be done at home. Please do NOT wind anything ahead of time as set up on the warping board is a crucial piece of this method. Cost is $129 (includes tax). Get a preview at the Weavers’ Review on March 10. This class will be held at Southwest Decoratives (5711 Carmel Ave. NE) Con-tact Cathlena at gingkoweavesbyc@ gmail.com or 505-264-7969 to sign up

Fiber Arts Fiesta 2019

Planning for the 2019 Fiber Arts Fiesta is officially underway. The dates are set: May 30, May 31, and June 1, 2019 at the Expo Center on the State Fair Grounds. Updates on deadlines for exhibit entries as well as volunteer needs will be announced periodi-cally at our Guild meetings and in this news-letter. For now just sit back and begin dream-ing of what you want to enter early next year. If you are new to Albuquerque or to the Guild you might want a little background infor-mation. The Fiber Arts Fiesta is a biannual 3 day fiber celebration under the auspices of the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council (www.abqfiberartscouncil.org). The event is organized by 19 participating Albuquerque fiber related Guilds who have agreed to be responsible for organizing and setting up the 13 exhibit divisions. Las Arañas is responsi-ble for the Spinning and Weaving Division. Fiber artists from all over are encouraged to submit entries early in 2019 into the different divisions. Divisions may choose to have their entries judged and awards given.

Fiesta exhibits are created for each divi-sion by the responsible guild. In addition to these exhibits there are usually 60-70 fiber related vendors on site as well as 2-3 special exhibits. The Fiesta uses volunteers from all participating guilds to “run” the event. The pub-lic pays for admission. In 2017 there were ap-proximately 3,000 attendees. The Guild representative for the Fiesta is Sandy Gale. Contact her any time if you have questions. She has been the primary coordina-tor for the Spinning and Weaving Division for the last 2 Fiestas. This will be her last Fiesta. If you enjoy event planning and want to learn how 19 Guilds all make magic happen she would love to have you be part of the process. Contact information: [email protected]; 505-263-5624 For those of you who like to know about other Albuquerque guilds, please go to the Council website (www.abqfiberartscouncil.org) and click the newsletter tab to subscribe to the free monthly eFAN. This is a electronic news-letter which will help keep you up on commu-nity fiber events that may not appear in our guild newsletter.

Weavers Helping Weavers will meet again in March. See elsewhere in the newsletter for additional information.

Instant Gallery: Myra Chang Thomp-son showed a figurative bound weave from her class done by Dana Dawson; Becky Arnold modeled the hat she knit from her flax and wool hand spun yarn; Karen Hood along with Shelly Dicks and Annie Osburn showed off their final projects from Cath-lena’s January beginning weaving class – 2 shawls and a serape; Jean LaHue taught herself to crochet with variegated wool and showed her scarf where she played with color pooling, Pam Lipper took 8 yards of fabric off her loom and had left the ends hanging off the selvedge. She discovered the ends fulled differently but she’s working on a solution; Annie McHale provided the end of the story she told last month on her client’s blueprint for a strap and also showed some yarn she got from Robin Pascal that after warping, she took off the loom and partially dyed for multi-color; Cat O’Connor showed her tatted dragon’s body with twisted picot as she found instructions on how to do it on the internet, and. Ruth Ronan modeled her Con-vergence entry, a long swing coat in bright blue tencel with overshot silver stripes and a solid silver lining. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. —Margie Hanson
