It is hard to believe I am writing my final report as Principal of Le Fevre High School. It has been an absolute privilege to serve this school community over the last 11 years and I must

say I have enjoyed it immensely. I have learnt much during that time and it is fair to say that I have truly loved the Le Fevre High School community. It is now time for me to pursue other interests and for fresh eyes for the school. I wish Ms Karen Bond every success as the incoming Principal and I wish the school every good fortune in the future. 2018 has again been a wonderful year for our school community. For me 2018 will be the STEM Centre year! And of course, the announcement that Year 7s will be moving to high school in coming years and that LFHS will receive a further $2 million to undertake capital works as a part of this program.

I am and will always be immensely proud of our school, its students and its staff. This is a great school and its traditions are proud and innovations strong as we continuously seek ways of improving what we do. I have been doing much reflection as I contemplate retirement and I realize the annual graduation event is still the absolute stand out event in the calendar of the school for me as we recognise the achievements of our students and wish them well. It is my proudest and happiest moment in the school year as I meet the graduating students on the stage and the images of them throughout their time at school flash before me and culminate in our celebration of their graduation after 5 years of working towards their educational goals.

I pay tribute to all staff members who have contribute to the lives and educational programs for our students.

The very positive feedback we received from

the external review team who were in the

school in Week 5 confirmed that we are a

school that is on a strong improvement

pathway and that we take supporting and

developing student learning very seriously.

At this time, I publically acknowledge the

career of Ms Susan Kauschke our EALD

teacher as she takes up new commitments

next year and Mr Michael Riggs, Mr Jake

Innis, Mr John Callisto, Mr Grant Kininmont

and Ms Jane Fogarty as they take up

appointments in other schools. I also

acknowledge and thank other contract

teachers who may be leaving the school in

2019. These are not known yet, so I say to all

staff thank you for your contribution to our

students no matter over what time you have

served our school.

On behalf of the school, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents, particularly the members of the Governing Council, staff, students, our industry partners and community organisations who work with us, for their ongoing commitment, support and dedication to Le Fevre High.

Just as important as our learning together is our social purpose as an educational organisation. As a community of learners we learn so much about the importance of working together, enjoying the special moments at school and the preparations that we are continuously undertaking in developing lifelong skills, attitudes and dispositions as successful citizens.

From the Principal cont…. The culture of our school is continuing to develop and mature and in my view we have become more confident in what we stand for and what we hold dear. The service to community we have aspired to is becoming more and more evident. The Student Voice group, with so many charitable events and most recently with fundraising for the Luang Prabang Orphanage in Laos, the students who donate blood for the Red Cross, the staff members who participate in so many community initiatives, individual students and their families recognizing local and international need…so the list goes on. We continue to be a strong community of givers and I congratulate you all for this. Please remember that the Annual General Meeting for the Le Fevre High School Governing Council will be held Monday 11 February 2019 at 7.00 pm following the Welcome for New Year 8 parents which will be at 6.00pm. Please consider being a member of this important forum that involves parents and the community in the governance of the school. We are always looking for new members so please consider nominating. Once again, I say a huge thank you to this school community, the staff, students, parents, Governing Council and our business partners for the incredible kindness that has been shown to me over the last 11 years while I have been Principal of the school. I will sorely miss Le Fevre. I know I will always be proud to say have been principal of this school and I take much in my heart for you all. On behalf of the staff I wish all the members of the Le Fevre High School community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yakkanandalya yoongandalilya (my dear brothers and my dear sisters) Ngaityalya (thank you) Go well Rob Shepherd Principal

Dear Parents, On Friday 23/11/18 the Le Fevre High school community embraced White Ribbon Day. This unique day is a global movement of men and boys working towards ending men's violence against women. While it cannot be overlooked that are the victims of gender based violence as well, it is evident that it is women who throughout the world are majorly affected by gender based violence as a result of unequal distribution of power and resources. This day does not intend to put men in darker frame, but rather acknowledges that there is higher prevalence of violence against women and it is necessary as a community to stand against it. To raise awareness and educate students about the meaning of the day information was sent to care group teachers to discuss with their classes. Also, Year 10 boys Dan S and Syntu S created an amazing educational visual display in the main foyer to provide further information for students. During the week we hosted two activities, one being a male only staff meditation session ran by our social work students and also, a successful gold coin donation BBQ sausage sizzle run during Friday lunch time. Congratulations to Janaye G - Year 12 student on being named SAASTA Student of the Year for South Australia. She also had the honour of being Master of Ceremony at the Department for Education Aboriginal Strategy launch held at Le Fevre High School on 11 December 2018.

Subs In Schools National Finals

Le Fevre High School was represented by four of our Year 10 students in the Subs in Schools National Finals. Mitchell B Hayden J Drew A Daniel S I would also like to acknowledge and thank Chloe J for her work and participation in the State Finals in the lead up to the National Finals. The competition was held at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour, Sydney. 14 teams from 4 states were represented across the three categories: Submarine Spacial Design Underwater ROV Submarine Our students participated in the hardest of them all, the Submarine competition, where they had to make a fully functioning model submarine. I am proud to say our LFHS SEAWOLF team won the Sea Trial event meaning they had the best performing submarine at this year’s national competition. Having the best submarine however doesn’t automatically make you win the entire competition as they are assessed on their engineering and enterprise portfolios, verbal presentation, innovation, CAD interviews, booth design, marketing, uniform, sponsors etc. Overall SEAWOLF finished 3rd in the country. A fantastic achievement. I would like to congratulate all the students involved in this program, they represented themselves and Le Fevre High School tremendously throughout both the State Finals at the Royal Adelaide Show and then the National Finals in Sydney. I would also like to thank Eddie Grzeskowiak for his support towards the program and helping supervise the students in Sydney. Liam Narcys Maritime Leader

Passionate Readers and Writers

We have had some very passionate writers and readers at Le Fevre High School this year. Students have been given the opportunity to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge – including the Premier’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) reading and poster competition and the Premier’s Indonesian Challenge competition. Congratulations go to 28 students who completed the challenge this year. Special congratulations go to two students, Sofya C and Elle B, who received a runner’s up prize for the STEM reading and poster competition. There were over 700 hundred entries for this competition across the state. The students were asked to read a novel based on STEM, then create a poster that inspired others to explore STEM based on the subject matter of the book they read. We are still waiting to hear (with fingers crossed!) how our entries to the Indonesian Challenge went. There have also been opportunities for students to enter literary competitions this year, such as the South Australian Teacher’s Education Spring Poetry Competition and the St Vincent’s Literary Competition. Congratulations to Stephanie McN, who was published in the Spring Poetry Anthology. We are also excited to see three of our students shortlisted for the St Vincent’s L iterary Competition – Jack J, Stephanie McN and Daniel S. The winners will be announced on Wednesday the 28th of November at the Presentation night. We encourage everyone to participate in these wonderful opportunities which encourage our students to showcase their remarkable literary talents. Rachel McLaine Literacy Coach
