Information for the teacher

Thislessonteachesyoungchildrenthathotthingscanhurtthemandnottotouchhotthings.Forthislesson,“hotthings”includethingsthatmaynotbehotrightnowbutcangethot,suchasacookingpot,alighter,atoaster,oracurlingiron.

Childcarecentersandpeople’shomesmayhavethingsthatcanburnyoungchildren.Childrencanbeburnedfromtouchinghotthings,suchasapanonthestoveoracurlingiron,andfromhotliquids,suchasacupofteaorbathwater.Matchesandlighterscanalsogethot.Teachchildrentostayawayfrommatchesandlightersandtotellagrownupiftheyseetheseitems.Youngchildrenplayingwithmatchesandlighterscausemanyfires,deathsandinjurieseachyear.

The messages for parents and caregivers are:

• Setthehotwatertemperatureonthewaterheaternohigherthan120degreesFahrenheittopreventscaldburnsfromtapwater.

• Supervisechildrenduringbathtime.Fillthetubbyrunningcoolwaterfirst,thenaddinghotwater.Testthetemper-atureofthewaterbymovingyourhand,wristandforearmthroughthewaterbeforeplacingthechildinthebath.Thewatershouldfeelwarm,nothot,tothetouch.

• Keephotfoodsandliquidsawayfromtablesandcounteredgessotheycannotbepulledorknockedover.

• Turnthehandleofcookingpanstowardthebackofthestove.

• Neverholdachildinyourarmswhilepreparinghotfoodordrinkingahotbeverage.

• Teachchildrenthathotthingshurtandnottotouchhotthings.

• Keepmatchesandlightersuphighinalockedcabinetandoutofthereachofchildren.

Activities

Teachthe“Don’tTouchHotThings”songoverseveraldays.Then,usethesongrepeatedlyduringthefiresafetylessonsandthroughouttheschoolyear.

DownloadtheMP3filesofthe“Don’tTouchHotThings”songfromNFPA’swebsite(www.nfpa.org/preschoolprogram).Playthe“Don’tTouchHotThings”songforthechildrenandteachthemtosingpartorallofthesong.

Anotherwaytousethesongistohavethechildrenmarcharoundtothemusic.Tellthechildrenthatwhenyoustopthemusic,theyshouldgetnexttosomething(orapictureofsomething)thatcangethot.Leteachchildhaveaturnnamingtheobjecttheychose.

Makeposterboardswithillustrationsshowingtheobjectsinthesong,suchasmatches,lighters,hotsoup,coffeepots,etc.Haveeachchildholdadifferentposterboardandstepforwardduringthesongwhentheobjectonhisorherposterismentioned.

Activity Discussion

Discusswiththechildrenhowtheycancooldifferentthings.Ask“Howdoyoucoolyourfood?”Answerscaninclude:Blowonit.Waituntilitcoolsdown.AskMomorDadtoputitintherefrigerator.Then,ask“Howdoesyourmomordadmakesureyourbathwaterisnottoohot?Answerscaninclude:Theyrunthecoolwaterinthetubfirstandthenthehotwater.Momputsherarminthewaterandmovesitbackandforthtotestit.

Our class is learning about fire safety through the Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program®. Today we learned that “Hot Things Can Hurt You.” Please talk to your child about this important safety message. Here are some things you can discuss with your child.

• Hotthingscanhurtyou.Askyourchildtonamethingsinyourhomethatcangethot. (Stove, hot water, fireplace, matches, and so on.)

• Remindyourchildtostayawayfromhotthingsandnottotouchhotthings.

• Teachyourchildtotellagrown-upiftheyfindmatchesoralighter.

You can help your child by keeping hot things away from them.

• Makesureyourhotwatertemperatureisnothigherthan120°F.

• Testwaterbeforeplacingachildinabath.Runthecoldwaterfirst.Thenaddhotwater. Mix the water. Test the water by moving your hand, wrist and forearm through the water. Make sure the water is warm, not hot.

• Keephotfoodsandliquidsawayfromtheedgeofacounterortable.

• Keepmatchesandlightersinalockedcabinet.
