AIMS OF THE PROGRAM

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICSOf Leap/AE students

The aim of the Learning Extension Academic Program (LEAP) and Academic Extension (AE) program at Hedland SHS is to challenge students with enriched learning opportunities such as Problem Based Learning promoting a focus on academic rigour and intellectual challenge. The program seeks to provide opportunities for critical analysis with an emphasis on higher order thought processes. Developing students’ readiness and preparedness for future studies in Years 11 and 12 is a concurrent feature of the program in all academic years.

A LEAP/AE learner may display some or all of the following characteristics:• is highly creative or imaginative, for example, produces many ideas• exhibits heightened curiosity• may be highly motivated, particularly in self-selected tasks• has superior insight and the ability to draw inferences or is intuitive• possesses a large, advanced vocabulary• has an excellent memory• is an independent learner (autonomous)• desired mastery of concepts or skills• has unusual or advanced interests• demonstrates exceptional critical thinking or problem solving skills• may have a keen sense of humour• may have superior leadership or interpersonal skills• may demonstrate a high degree of social responsibility or moral reasoning• engages in academic debates in class

SELECTION OF STUDENTS

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMAll LEAP & AE students are enrolled in academic extension courses for:• Mathematics• English• Science• Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

All students participate in PBL (Problem Based Learning) projects throughout the year

Students who wish to be considered for placement in the LEAP/AE program need to:1. Attend Hedland SHS LEAP/AE testing day (Term 4) –date TBC2. Complete a LEAP/AE application (also provide NAPLAN data, school report)3. Have an attendance rate of 90% or higher**Students will be advised in writing of the outcome of this selection process. EVALUATIONMaintaining a place in the Hedland SHS LEAP/AE program is based on ongoing assessment conducted throughout the course. Student performance is reviewed during each semester and students are informed of their suitability to continue in the program.

Students must maintain:• an attendance rate of 90% or higher (absence due to medical reasons will be considered as a reasonable absence).• sound academic standing• a positive focus on learning and engagement in the program• positive school behaviour
