Literacy and English Tasks How did you get on?

Monday Reading - Read for enjoyment – You could try and find a book relating to our new ‘pirates’ topic.

Handwriting - Make sure you are sitting comfortably with both feet on the floor. Hold your pencil correctly and ensure your paper is straight on the desk in front of you. Write these common words out 4 times each. ‘there, they, go, no, so, my’

Remember to take care with the sizing of your letters and ensure all words sit on the line.

Tuesday Writing – Try writing a Pirate acrostic poem. In an acrostic poem the first letter of each line spells out a word related to the topic. Have a look online or in some poetry books to find some examples. Acrostic poems do not have to rhyme. Look at my example below. Peg leg Island hopping Robbing treasure Arr! All aboard! Treasure map Eye patch on black eyes

Wednesday Grammar – Nouns A noun is a naming word. Common nouns are naming words that are not important so therefore do not require a capital letter, for example, chair or pen. Draw 3 nouns and write the noun underneath. Can you finish these sentences? They are missing the nouns. Write the full sentence in your jotter – not forgetting capital letters and full stops. 1) The _______ is black. 2) I throw the __________. 3) A _________ can swim. 4) I like to eat ____________. Spelling – Use the active spelling strategy rainbow writing to practise your words this week. Each letter should be in a different colour if possible. brush, rush, much, bench, lunch, think, this, spring, bring, song.

Thursday Reading Comprehension I have added a screen shot of the activity below. Look at the picture and then answer the questions in full sentences in your jotter, do not forget capital letters and full stops. *Challenge* Try to make up four more questions about the picture and ask a family member to answer them.

Mathematic and Numeracy Tasks How did you get on?

Monday Mental Maths So far, we have revised some number stories. This week, I would like you to focus on developing your ability to add numbers mentally. This YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWE2AzEsgU4 very clearly explains several methods used during mental maths. Today, we are focussing on the ‘Counting on’ method. This is when you look at a sum and put the biggest number first. For example, 1 + 7 - put the biggest number ‘in your head’ and add on 1 with your finger. 3 + 14 – put 14 ‘in your head’ and add on 3. So rather than having to start counting from 1, the children should recognise that they have 14 in their head and only need to add on 3. This can be repeated for any addition up to 20. The more the process is repeated, the easier the children will find it.

Tuesday Times Tables Complete these questions in your jotter, you can use objects around the house to help you make the sets. For example 4 x 5 = 4 sets of 5 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 use repeated addition to help you get the answer. 1) 5 x 6 = 2) 3 x 5 = 3) 2 x 8 = 4) 4 x 4 = 5) 6 x 2 = 6) 5 x 2 = 7) 8 x 1 = 8) 7 x 2 =

Wednesday Revise addition stories to 13 What 2 numbers add together to make 13? Lay this out in jotter like: 0 + 13 = 13 1 + 12 = 13… Remember 1 number in each square. Once you have completed this in your jotter, begin to go over them without looking. How many stories can you remember? Challenge – Using the mental strategy from Monday and complete 10 questions mentally.

Thursday Mental Maths Try these sums using Mondays strategy.

1) 15 + 4 = 2) 13 + 5 = 3) 12 + 8 = 4) 14 + 4 = 5) 16 + 2 = 6) 15 + 2 = 7) 8 + 3 = 8) 17 + 3 = *Challenge* Try and make 8 more and see if you can answer them.
