Summer Reading Challenge is back for 2020 with ‘Silly Squad’! The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun and enjoyment as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. This year, the Summer Reading Challenge’s Silly Squad will celebrate funny books, happiness and laughter. Children taking part in the Challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck into all sorts of funny books! Literacy and English Tasks How did you get on?

Monday Reading - Read for enjoyment – You could try and find a book relating to our new ‘pirates’ topic. I have assigned some books on Epic!

Handwriting - Make sure you are sitting comfortably with both feet on the floor. Hold your pencil correctly and ensure your paper is straight on the desk in front of you. Today write the next six months of the year out 4 times. January, February, March, April, May, June. Remember to take care with the sizing of your letters and ensure all words sit on the line.

Tuesday Writing – Imagine you were a pirate on a ship sailing at sea. Draw what you can imagine you can see through your telescope. Write a description to match your picture. You could use the sheet below to help you lay out your jotter. You might want to use something round to draw around for the telescope.

When you’re on a ship and at sea sometimes you can only see the sea for miles around. Think about what someone would look out from the ship using a telescope. You might be able to see; fish, islands, seagulls or even mermaids.

Wednesday Spelling – Use an active spelling strategy of your choice to practise your words this week. You could use rainbow writing, backward writing, pyramid spelling, alphabetical order. Spelling words; up, man, crab, off, cliff, stiff, cuff, come, some, stuffing *Challenge* Write 5 sentences using spelling words above or write 5 silly sentences using the words above.

Thursday Grammar – A suffix is a letter or group of letters that goes on the end of a word and changes the word’s meaning.

Read the sentences in the sheet below and decide which suffix is needed to correctly complete the words.
