But did you know the firm also left a footprint in Greenwich? Learn more about these two men who did so much to define the dominant American style at the start of the 20th century. Dr. Heather Ewing is an architectural historian and author of books about the Smithsonian. FRIDAY 10-12 – February 28 Tuition $10.00 #502 - THE GOLDEN AGE OF ITALIAN OPERA Opera from its inception was primarily an Italian style of music, though composers would appropriate the genre all over Europe. It was the Italian composers who prospered most and set the standard that would be widely imitated. Perhaps no century constitutes a more flourishing ”golden age” than the 19th century. Dr. Gil Harel, musicologist and music theorist, will discuss how in the works of Donizetti and Bellini, a new style known as Bel Canto would be codified. Later in the century, nobody stood taller than Verdi, with works such as Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, which are still staples in opera houses the world over. _______________________________________________________________________________ To Register or for Catalog updates go to: https://www.lirstamford.org/ 11 Online Registration will be open until midnight before each class. FRIDAY 10-12 – March 27 Tuition $10.00 #506 - WHAT'S JEWISH ABOUT JEWISH MUSIC? Is it the text? The subject matter? The composer? Is there an element, which makes a piece uniquely Jewish? We'll explore these questions and more; class to include live sung excerpts of music and recordings. Cantor Jill Abramson, the spiritual leader of Congregation Shir Ami (Greenwich/Stamford) will look at composers across the centuries in different styles.
