With incredible facilities and the region’s only Apple and Ableton Training Centres, Leicester College’s Performing Arts and Music and Sound Technology department is both accomplished and widely recognised for the high standard of training it delivers.

Training at Leicester College means you will have access to purpose built fully equipped dance studios, two commercial theatres, four acoustically treated soundproofed practice rooms, three professional spec recording studios, fully equipped MAC suites, regular master classes with industry professionals; all delivered by a team of trainers with extensive industry experience.

Ableton 101 Certificate

Course Codes: C0132 Fees: £100Start Date: Any time through the year Multiple Levels

What is the training about?The course will offer employees a full introduction to the principles and practices of Ableton Live, working with Ableton-accredited instructors. Who should attend?No formal entry requirements; a keen interest in music technology is required.

Training outcomesBased in a practical workshop environment, employees will have access to their own personal workstation where they will apply and practice their production skills using this industry-specific software. Employees will be supported through learning the applications of the software and will have the ability to discuss their personal goals with their tutor.

DurationFour weeks.

AssessmentNo standardised assessment.

ProgressionOn to the Advanced Programming (demand permitting) course including MAX MSP and Advanced Ableton course. We would recommend progression on to Advanced Ableton or a similar course to further develop skills. Delegates might use these skills in their own productions or it may feed into a University Level course

Advanced Ableton Certificate

Course Codes: C0138 Fees: £100Start Date: Any time through the year Multiple Levels

What is the training about?This course is for more advanced Ableton Live users and is delivered by one of the UKs only Ableton Trainers. Who should attend?Solid working knowledge of Ableton Live.

Training outcomesIt will delve much deeper “under the bonnet” of one of electronic music’s most popular Digital Audio Workstations and will cover MAX for Live and more hardware aspects of live performance.

DurationFour weeks.

AssessmentNo standardised assessment.

ProgressionAfter completion delegates can use the skills they have acquired in live performance of electronic music, or they could feed into their music productions.

Creative Sound Technology Foundation Degree

Course Code: C0044 UCAS CODE L36 W372 Annual Fee: £6,000Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 5

What is the training about?The programme aims to provide employees with the skills needed to progress within the music business, recording and multimedia industries as well as the significant live performance support sector. Who should attend?Employees require a GCSE English grade ‘C’ or equivalent and 120 UCAS points to include either a relevant Access to HE course, Extended Diploma/GNVQ level 3 in a relevant subject, or an A2 level in a related subject. We welcome applications from employees who do not match the standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate commitment to studying this subject at university level, and who can evidence academic or vocational experience in a related field. All employees need to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of music technology at interview.

Training outcomesThis programme is equivalent to the first two years of a degree and is valid in its own right. It explores a wide range of disciplines including creative music applications, performance technologies, recording and production techniques, live sound, and, importantly, employees will learn the business skills needed to make them successful.

Year One modules include programming, sound creation and manipulation, essential business skills, introduction to audio recording, acoustics, audio electronics, and theatre sound.

Year Two modules include Live performance and technology (using hardware and software), multimedia, studio production, live music engineering, freelance business and advanced programming. Employees will have sole access to Studio 3 with an Audient desk and high end outboard running to Pro Tools and other major DAWs, as well as using our Mac Suites and other two studios.

DurationTwo years.

AssessmentAssessment is via coursework.

ProgressionEmployees can “top up” by joining the final year of the BSc (Hons) Degree Music Technology at DMU or may also apply to other universities to ‘top up’ to other audio production-related degrees. Employees will be able to work in music, sound technology and associated industries.

Performance (Acting) Foundation Degree

Course Code: C0046 UCAS CODE L36 W410 Annual Fee: £6,000Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 5

What is the training about?It is designed to mirror some of the experience that takes place at a conservatoire, with its concentration on professional training and focus on the core skills of: acting, voice and movement. Who should attend?Employees require a GCSE English ‘C’ or equivalent and 120 UCAS points to include either a relevant Access to HE course, Extended Diploma/GNVQ level 3 in a relevant subject, or an A2 level in a performance-related subject. We welcome applications from employees 21+ who do not match the standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate commitment to studying this subject at university level, and who can evidence academic or vocational experience in a related field.

Training outcomesDuring the programme, the delegates will work towards the following:

project 1 the creative group - devisedproject 2 character alone - scriptwriting and performanceproject 3 classical theatre project 4 contemporary theatre.

In addition participants will study movement, voice, film and radio, music theatre, clowning and a major production.

DurationTwo years.

AssessmentAssessment is via coursework.

ProgressionEmployees can “top up” to Leicester College’s BA (Hons) Professional Studies (Performing Arts). Or at another university. Alternatively employees can continue into the industry or undertake an apprenticeship with a participating professional company.

Performance (Dance) Foundation Degree

What is the training about?It is an intensive and challenging course designed to prepare the dancer for the professional industry. Emphasis is placed upon studio practice whilst developing the academic knowledge required for a sustainable career. Who should attend?Employees require a GCSE English ‘C’ or equivalent and 120 UCAS points to include either a relevant Access to HE course, Extended Diploma/GNVQ level 3 in a relevant subject, or an A2 level in a performance-related subject. We welcome applications from employees who do not match the standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate commitment to studying this subject at university level, and who can evidence academic or vocational experience in a related field.

Training outcomesThe training aims to provide relevant work-ready skills for the creative industries. Modules include contemporary Dance, ballet, improvisation and choreography, anatomy and physiology, performance and repertoire, contextual studies, collaborative project, choreographic performance project and dance techniques including jazz dance and commercial dance. Students engage in a work placement as part of the community dance module to develop skills in teaching and leading dance. Employees will receive a programme of guest lecturers and masterclasses to maintain skills at the cutting edge of thinking and practice. Previous visiting companies and local organisations include Phoenix Dance Theatre, James Wilton Dance Company, Bonachela Dance Company and Foundation for Community Dance. A high volume of delivery will take place in our city centre professional theatre (250- seat capacity) and dance studios.

AssessmentAssessment is via coursework.

ProgressionSuccessful employees are equipped to progress into a range of dance related careers. Following the FD Dance programme employees may wish to “Top up” to BA (Hons) Professional Studies (Performing Arts) at Leicester College or an alternative institution. On completion employees may progress into employment in the following related fields: performance, choreography, community dance practice, dance and fitness.

Professional Studies (Performing Arts)BA (Hons) (Top-up)

Course Code: C0043 UCAS CODE L36 W470 Annual Fee: £6,000Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 6

What is the training about?It is about developing the professional skills and knowledge needed to enter the industry as a Freelance Performance Practitioner. Who should attend?Eligible employees will have successfully completed a performance qualification equivalent to level 5. This will normally be a Foundation Degree, an HND or a DipHE in Acting, Dance or Performing Arts. An appropriate professional qualification at level 5 may also provide eligibility. In addition to possessing a level 5 award, eligible applicants will have a level 5 award in a subject relevant to their proposed field of study and demonstrate the likelihood of an ability to benefit from the programme.

Training outcomesThe broad approach to the course allows employees from Level 5 performance courses to top-up to a full BA Honours qualification. Attendees will develop their performance/production, independent study, research and critical analysis skills through workshops and seminars aimed at developing a focused professional practice. Employees will also develop employability skills in preparation for the diverse nature of the performing arts industry.

The course has four modules: • professional development and project preparation• creative and critical enquiry• professional practice• work based learning.

Alongside the main programme of study, employees willbe able to undertake the Level 3 Award in Education and Training allowing employees to formally teach in the Life Long Learning sector.
