Credit is the term given to student’s achievement (a similar word to marks).
Students are given credits for modules, tasks and final examinations. The
total number of credits in Leaving Certificate Applied is 200 credits. These
are awarded each session
Credit–Value
Modules in exam courses get one credit. Non-exam courses get two credits.
Check with co-ordinator.
Elements The Leaving Certificate Applied is divided into three elements -
Vocational Preparation, Vocational Education and General Education. Each
element is further subdivided into courses.
Integrated Programme involves cross curricular integration and the related
collaboration among teachers. Integration is one of the specific requirements
in the Student Tasks. .
Key Assignments are learning outcomes selected from the module as being
of key importance and are a minimum requirement along with at least 90%
attendance to gain credit for a module. Evidence of each key assignment is
also required.

Learning outcomes describe what the student should be able to do. These are
listed in the module descriptor and teaching guidelines are given for each.
Modules Each course area is made up of a number of modules. A module
represents approximately 30 hours i.e. 3-4 class periods per week over one
session.
Session For the purpose of the Leaving Certificate Applied the school year is
divided into two sessions September to the end of January and February to June.
The full two year programme has four sessions.
Specialisms Students complete two Vocational Specialisms from the eleven
options available. (Check with your Leaving Certificate Applied Co-Ordinator to
identify which Vocational Specialisms your students, both LCA I and LCA II, are
doing). Students complete four modules, a Vocational Education task and do a
final exam with a practical and a written in each specialism.
Units Modules are subdivided into units. Each unit contains learning outcomes
which have been grouped together because they have a common theme or fit
together.

Module 1 and Module 2 Content
The activities relating to the content of Modules One and Two
should be taken from the Table of Activities given below.
The table has been divided into six different categories of
activities. To ensure that the students experience participation
in a wide range of activities, it is recommended that at least
TWO activities, each one from a different category are
included in each module.
The two activities selected for the first module should be
different from the two activities selected for the second
module. (It is acknowledged that where resources are limited
this may not be achievable. In these circumstances teachers
may choose activities from the same category). It is important
to select activities appropriate to each module.
