Author

William Henry Davies is also known as W.H.Davies. He was born on 3rd July 1871 in Newport,

Wales. His father who was an iron-moulder diedwhen Davies was barely two years old. The hismother remarried. She puts Davies togetherwith his two other siblings under the care of hispaternal grandparents.

Davies left the United Kingdom during histeenage life and moved to the United States.

 This marked the beginning of his tramp

Subsequently, he composed and wrote poems.He borrowed money to get them printed and sold

them door-to-door. However, the enterprisehalted. His self-published anthology of poems ,‘The Soul Destroyer’ in 1905 finally gainedrecognition by Arthur Adcock who was a

 journalist with the Daily Mail. Later, the literacycritic, Edward Thomas adopted the role of guardian for Davies. George Bernard Shaw alsowrote a preface for his manuscript, ‘TheAutobiography of a Super-Tramp’.

Author

He then moved to London and his poemsattracted fellow poets who include W.B. Yeats

and Ezra Pound. His work revolve greatly aroundnature, hardship, his tramping experiences andthe characters he met. Davies was a famouspoet and writer during his time. He is best known

for the opening two lines of the poem, Leisure“What is this life if, full of care ; We have no timeto stand and stare”

He was also honoured with the degree of DoctorLitteris, honoris causa from the University of Wales. He died on 26th September 1940.

Synopsis

 The poem is about a man not having time or notmaking time to enjoy nature and the simplepleasures of life. The persona questions what lifeis if we lead hurried lives all the time and haveno time to look at nature or enjoy the beauty

around us. Leisure is having free time to relax.However, we have too much work and make notime to enjoy the little things around us. Thus,quality of life is poor.

Synopsis

 The persona believes that we should spend ourfree time enjoying and appreciating the beautyof nature. We should have the time to standunder trees and look at the things happeningaround us. When we passed the woods, we

should observe the activities of little animals likesquirrels. We should also take time to look atstreams that shimmer in daylight due toreflections of light. Setting

 The persona uses nature such as the woods,streams, sky, farm animals and squirrels toportray the joys of simple living which busypeople neglect. The rural setting used as thebackground enables his readers to savour a newworld of experience and delight.

 Tone and mood

 The persona is contemplative and reflectiveabout how we often ignore the beauty of natureand life’s simple pleasures. He seems frustratedand sad that man is so engrossed with routinethat there is no time to enjoy a leisurelyobservation of life around us.
