One benefit of joining a union is that union members tend to get paid higher than people who are not in a union. • Trade union membership levels for UK employees fell by 2.7 per cent between 2009 and 2010.

Changes by Region• Of the four nations, union membership in 2010

rose in Scotland by 0.5% to 32.3% compared to 2009, but fell in all other nations by 0.9% each in England (to 25.2%) and Wales (34.%), and by 4.2% in Northern Ireland to 35.%

• Amongst the English regions, union membership fell in all regions with the North East recording the largest fall in union membership of 7.4% over the decade whilst the East of England had the smallest fall of 1.0%
