Tabor Adelaide prides itself on offering a tertiary education experience with a difference to students of all ages, offering a choice to be a part of a personalised learning environment.

Nothing has been more evident over the last month with Tabor Adelaide receiving overwhelming interest at the recent Tertiary Studies and Careers Expo at the Adelaide Convention Centre in relation to our courses on offer and our intimate learning environment.

Exhibiting at the event, Tabor looked to showcase their point of difference and spoke to hundreds of potential new students over the two day event.

Don Owers, Principal of Tabor Adelaide says that Tabor is big enough to provide the resources required for high quality education, but small enough to offer personal academic direction and care.

“Our main point of difference from the universities is that we create a personal learning community for each individual student. It is about delivering a tertiary education in a nurturing environment,” said Don Owers.

“As many of you know, we are just like all other major universities in regards to the pursuit of academic excellence but we are a relatively small institution, meaning we can offer students an education experience that ensures no one is lost in the crowd.”

At Tabor Adelaide everyone works very hard to maintain its reputation as an educational facility where there is ready access to lecturers and tutors for students. It is intimate in regard to class sizes and student numbers, meaning that teaching staff know who you are and take a personal interest in your academic progress.

These sentiments are echoed by the students themselves. Bachelor of Primary Education student, Katherine Magarey, 25 couldn’t be happier with her choice to study at Tabor Adelaide and highly recommends it to others.

“I chose to study at Tabor because I had heard good things from other people who had completed studies here. They recommended the Education course for having a quality teaching program and it has certainly lived up to expectations,” said Katherine.

“Through studying at Tabor, I appreciate that I am not just another number in the system. I am called by name and people are personally interested in my professional success. I have valued this input from lecturing staff right through to the admin community.

“From what I’ve heard this has not been many people’s experience at other universities. Tabor has a wonderful reputation for producing quality teachers and that doesn’t just happen. I am very happy with my choice at studying at Tabor and hope to continue to uphold the reputation,” endorsed Katherine.

It is nice to know that as a tertiary institution promoting high ethical standards, social justice and equity, that there is much interest from the students of tomorrow in the community in what we have to offer. The value of being out and about to spread the Tabor message can never be underestimated as you just never know who may take an interest.

Tabor Adelaide’s promotion to prospective students continues over the coming months with many career nights, school seminars and presentations.

Roger and Viki harrison – TeSOL Graduating Class of 2002

Following is an open letter to ‘Taborites’ from Roger and Viki sharing their journey.

hi ‘Taborites’,

we were converted whilst in our late 40’s, immediately recognising our need to “go out into the entire world” to share the Good News. we spent two years in Jerusalem working in the Old City at Christ Church before heading off to NZ to undertake a short residential course of bible study with Capernwray bible School. That followed by us going to Nepal to teach english to Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu, a role we felt very unqualified to undertake without proper training.

Consequently, we returned to Australia and enrolled at Tabor Adelaide for a TeSOL course with an Intercultural studies component. Our plan was to return to Nepal as eSL teachers; however, God high jacked OUR plans and took us in another direction, mid-course!

we completed our TeSOL courses ‘way back in 2001’, graduating the following year. by graduation, we had been in Pakistan for several months, teaching english as a second language to Afghan refugees in Islamabad. At that time, there were over three million Afghan and Iranian refugees living in Pakistan. we served for two years in total over two separate postings, finishing during 2006 a tad worn-out. The eSL centre we served with was forcibly closed this year by militant Islamists who threatened violence against staff and students should their orders not be met “immediately”.

earlier this year, we were invited to teach english in Thailand with Mercy International, an organisation dedicated to helping orphaned and, hIV+ children in several centres within Thailand. we thought to “go and spy-out the land” first and have just returned from a three-week visit.

During our time there, we visited Mercy’s Language Centre in Sisaket where we taught a few english lessons to fee-paying Thai teenagers; an interesting experience. The language centre essentially raises operating funds for the orphanages.

Sitting in the bangkok airport at the end of our short visit whilst reviewing what we had seen and done, we were impressed with the thought: “we have seen and recognised a great need; we are qualified for the work; we are available we should go”. Indeed, we could not come up with any reason why we should not go. Now, in our late 60’s, we are off on another adventure with God in Thailand!

we recommend TeSOL as the medium through which believers may share their lives-in-Christ using ‘Life-Style’ evangelism whilst bringing aid to many through (their) acquisition of the english language.

blessings

Roger and Viki harrison

‘Tales from the Upper Room’

Tales from the Upper Room, stories and poems from Tabor’s 2009 Creative writing Program is a collection of the class of 2009 student’s work. Following is a poem by Dimity Knight.

I Dream about a Journey

I dream about a journey through my life

A mountain, dark and fierce, calls my name

The summit offers shelter from my strife

where joy and love will be the prize I claim.

No knight upon a steed will take me there

New courage is the strength that carries me.

My heart will whisper “take me where you dare”

No bridle forcing whom I’m meant to be.

but first I must let go of burdens past

And wash away the stains of hurt and tears.

In nakedness I’ll face the ridicule

Of those who have not understood my fears

Then dressing in the robes of one who’s blessed

I’ll conquer that high mountain on my quest.

Dimity Knight

What’s new in Tabor VET in 2011?2011 has been an exciting and challenging year for the VeT department at Tabor. This year we have launched three new programs to add to our existing offerings. This means, some new faces will be seen around the place, both in the student and lecturing population.

Keep your eye out for the following people:

Andrew Ford lectures and coordinates the Certificate IV in Youth Work.

After gaining his Degree in Quantity Surveying, Andrew decided to invest his time in helping people instead! he gained a qualification in Theology and worked in schools and churches as a youth Minister for five years. his love of travel has led him to emigrate from the UK to Australia where he pursues his many adventures, sporting and camping interests. Andrew provides Life Coaching to the year in the Son students as well as lecturing in youth work. he also runs his own coaching and training business.

Wayne Harrison lectures and coordinates the Diploma of Management and the Diploma of Training and Assessment.

wayne has an extensive background in Management, Leadership, business, and Training. As a leader in his field of business and as a trainer, he consults with various organisations, providing both personal and professional leadership training and development. wayne has been a credentialed minister with the (ACC) Australian Christian Churches for over a decade and is Senior Minister of Significance Church (Mawson Lakes.) he has extensive ministry experience ranging from preaching in open air rallies in Uganda, to training in Church planting schools in Russia.

These new courses have proved very popular. The Diploma courses run on alternate Tuesday evenings. The youth work Certificate runs Monday and Tuesday late afternoons.

All programs are available on line as well. Contact the VeT department if you are interested in joining either program.

Many thanks for your ongoing support.
