Hello everybody, and welcome to the Garrick Theatre for our production of‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’. It’s the first time we have staged this show and by theend of it I’m sure you will agree it’s an excellent choice.

To watch a show grow over a six month period is incredible. Theproduction team pass their skills and enthusiasm onto the whole company. To sit in on a rehearsal with the principles is a master class in directing. Thechorus, under the baton of Ruairi Edwards are drilled to perfection.

We welcome Sophie Randal as Choreographer, every move on stage is vitalto the appearance of the show and she has done a super job.

It’s a real delight to welcome new members into the society. I did overhearsome of the auditions and as a result, some amazing new talent has been addedto the company. The standard of auditions for principal parts was extremelyhigh and I am sure you will agree that the parts have been very well cast.

We are a happy bunch of people, and I like to think we look out for eachother, we become a family really.

I would like to thank Vice Presidents, Patrons, our hard working committee, back stage crew and also to you, our audience, for your continued support.

Please sit back for a history lesson set to music and enjoy the show!

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen. This is my sixth year as Chairman and it givesme great pleasure to welcome you once again to the Lichfield Garrick Theatre for tonight’sperformance of The Scarlet Pimpernel. This is a show that is probably unknown to many ofyou as a musical, but some of you will have read the famous book of the same name byBaroness Orczy.

Scarlet Pimpernel has proved to be a great challenge to the society and we must thankour talented production team of Lynne Hill as Production Director, Ruairi Edwards whoreturns as Musical Director, and making her debut as choreographer, Sophie Randal whosome of you will remember as Maria in the Sound of Music. They have all worked very welltogether and I must thank them for their efforts over the last six months.

This has been a very difficult show to learn, with so many songs being new to us. I hopeyou agree we have a very talented front line of principals in this show. As ever they arebacked up by the society’s strong chorus, many of whom could hold down principal rolesin their own right.

Finally I must mention our backstage technical team, unseen, but without them theshow would be very second rate. Then there is our management committee who serve thesociety so well throughout the year. All together a great team and my thanks to them all.

We are so very fortunate to have this wonderful Garrick Theatre in Lichfield and I thankThe Chief Executive Adrian Jackson and his staff who help us to put on a show as near toprofessional standards as we can make it.

A lot of hard work has been put in by everyone over the last six months and I invite youto sit back, relax and enjoy tonight’s performance. I hope that if you do enjoy the show youwill tell your friends to come and see it before we close on Saturday.

We never forget that without you, our audience, the Lichfield Operatic Society wouldnot exist and so I thank you on behalf of the Society for your continued support.

Martin Rainsford

T heScarlet Pimpernel SynopsisACT 1

The show opens in the theatre where Marguerite St Just is performing her final showbefore marrying Sir Percy Blakeney who is an English Aristocrat. Chauvelin, who is afanatical agent of the French republican revolutionaries, stops the show and announces thatthe theatre is being closed down. He allows Marguerite and her brother Armand clearpassage to England on the understanding she tells him the whereabouts of the Marquis deSt Cyr. She tells him on the understanding that he does not harm St Cyr or his family. Whenthe party leave for England St. Cyr is brought to the guillotine in Paris and executed.

Sir Percy is informed that Marguerite betrayed his friend St. Cyr, and from this pointPercy is torn between his love for Marguerite and the knowledge of what she has done.

Percy is determined to make amends for his friend’s death and decides to save otherinnocents from the guillotine. He takes the identity of The Scarlet Pimpernel and convincessome of his friends to join him. They pretend to be Fops to throw off any suspicions of their identity and Armand joins them. Marguerite has no idea that Sir Percy is the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Over the next few weeks they rescue potential victims. Robespierre, the Revolutionaries’leader, tells Chauvelin that he must find out who the Scarlet Pimpernel is, and orders himto work with Grappin who is a Belgian spy and the Pimpernel in disguise. Chauvelin vowsto find the Pimpernel.

Back in England, Marie, Marguerite’s best friend and costume designer, comes to paint Sir Percy’s portraitand she agrees to join the groupto assist with their disguises.Chauvelin visits Margueriteand tries to convince herto help him unmask the Scarlet Pimpernel.Marguerite refuses andrejects his advanceswhen he reminds herof their past loveaffair.

The Prince of Wales is suspicious of Percy and his friends’ frequent trips to Paris. To puta stop to his fears, Percy tells the League how important it is for them to dress flamboyantlyand in the latest fashion hence their trips to Paris. At the Palace they manage to convince thePrince that they are nothing to do with the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Chauvelin tries to enlist Marguerite once more by telling her that Armand has beenarrested in Paris and he threatens to have him executed if Marguerite does not help him.Marguerite is not sure she can trust Chauvelin.

ACT 2Marguerite is desperate and asks Percy’s friends to persuade the Scarlet Pimpernel

to meet her in the garden at 1am. She tells Chauvelin she has arranged this. Percy arrivesbut keeps himself concealed. He talks to Marguerite in the darkness and it becomesapparent to Percy that she had been coerced to betray St Cyr and he promises to saveArmand. At this point she is still unaware who the Scarlet Pimpernel is. Percy waits forChauvelin in the garden and acts the Fop to confuse him so that the Scarlet Pimpernel’sidentity is still unknown.

Percy and his friends go to France, and Marguerite decides to disguise herself and goesback to France to help Armand. She is apprehended by Chauvelin who sends her to prisonwith Armand.

In prison Armand tries to reassure Marguerite that they will be saved by the ScarletPimpernel but she mourns the loss of Percy in her life. They are then rescued and make theirway to the Harbour not knowing that Chauvelin is following them. On the way Margueritelearns of her husbands’ true identity. A guillotine has been erected at the Harbour.

This is followed by Grappin (Percy in disguise) informing Chauvelin that the ScarletPimpernel is Sir Percy and he is on his way to Calais. Chauvelin sends most of his soldiersto Calais not knowing that the few that remain are Percy’s friends in disguise. Grappinaccidentally lets his identity slip and has a duel with Chauvelin, which he loses andconsequently Percy is executed immediately.

In triumph Chauvelin believes that the remaining soldiers will inform Robespierre that the Scarlet Pimpernel has been captured, when he realises they are not his soldiers,Percy stands up from behind the guillotine’ The head that fell wasmade by Marie who had painted Percy’s portrait and in the meantimemarried Tussaud making her Madame Tussaud.

Percy’s men tie up Chauvelin and plant incriminating evidence on him sothat Robespierre will believe he was theScarlet Pimpernel all along. Margueriteand Percy are then reunited.
