CITY OF JOONDALUP MAYOR’S WELCOME

#Kaleidoscope18

2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Joondalup as a city.

This third Kaleidoscope festival provides the opportunity to reflect on the City’s past, present and future as it again transforms the Joondalup City Centre with a colourful program of amazing projections, fun visual installations and entertaining live performances. Audiences from Joondalup, Perth and around Australia have enthusiastically embraced our young festival, which aims to delight and inspire both kids and adults.

Kaleidoscope 2018 sees an amazingly talented group of local, interstate and international visual artists and performers combining for what I know will be an entertaining festival for the whole family. The festival site will be an illuminated wonderland for people to explore and just ‘be’ in.

On behalf of the City of Joondalup and the incredible team at Mellen Events, I hope you enjoy Kaleidoscope 2018 and that your time with us re-energises you to share your own unique light with family, friends and community.

#Kaleidoscope18

WA’s largest light and illumination festival, Kaleidoscope, is back for its biggest and brightest year yet, transforming the Joondalup City Centre into an extraordinary wonderland of light and art over four evenings from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 November 2018.

Kaleidoscope will combine light, art, entertainment and food creating a mind blowing multi-sensory experience.

This year’s festival footprint extends over Joondalup City Centre and Lakeside Joondalup. Pre-show entertainment and food commences at 5.00pm, and as the sun goes down, the lights come on at 7.30pm and the illuminated magic begins.

There will be over 60 food trucks serving endless options of street-style food all evening, along with the festival’s own KBar [Beatles]. Local restaurants and eateries at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City will also be open for dine-in and take-away options.

Last year’s festival attracted 80,000+ attendees and provided a unique platform for innovative artists, emerging performers and local creatives to showcase their incredible talent. Kaleidoscope is fun, free, family-friendly and accessible for everyone to enjoy.

See you and your family at Kaleidoscope 2018!

Lost & Found is a virtual animation that transforms the western facade of Lotteries House into an alternate world in which our hero kids find themselves home alone, dealing with a runaway space pet and an alien who has arrived to retrieve it.

Part optical illusion, part story and virtual puppet show, Lost & Found is a combination of interactive lighting and surreal animation where loveable characters seem to run in and out of walls, float in space and travel to other dimensions.

Directed by Drew Anthony featuring ‘The Sunflowers’ by ONGA ARTFUL LIGHT

Kaleidoscope, in partnership with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and with the support of the Joondalup City RSL Sub-Branch, welcomes you to ‘Armistice Park’. You are invited you to enjoy this remarkable collaborative installation and to remember those who lost their lives during the First World War and celebrate the end of the conflict. One hundred years ago on 11 November 1918, four bloody years of brutal conflict finally came to an end during which almost 62,000 Australians died fighting for our freedom and in service of our nation. After entering the park through the 1.2m high “Armistice Park” lettering, visitors are immediately immersed in the stunning and internationally acclaimed ‘The Sunflowers’ installation around which thousands of poppies can be found. Visitors are invited to take a single poppy and place it on the ‘Poppy Wall’ which will be completed progressively during the festival and in time for the Remembrance Day service on November 11.

THE SUNFLOWERS The Sunflowers welcome visitors with a bow - and in the most charming way introduce them to the potential of harnessing solar energy for a sustainable future. Sunflowers are loved by children and adults and are frequently associated with happiness, positivity and adoration. In oriental cultures, sunflowers signify intelligence, strength, good luck and a long life.

Gigantic, adorable, glowing white rabbits that invite us to wonderland and at the same time reveal a slightly darker tale.

Intrude is deceivingly complex, what appears to be simply a series of oversized glowing rabbits has a mysteriously powerful appeal. The work, first created for the Vivid festival has become one the world’s best loved touring pieces of contemporary art and been seen on 4 continents in almost 100 different settings.

And the rabbits, being rabbits, continue to multiply and hop their way into new venues around the world.

1000 Cranes is inspired by an ancient Japanese legend: if a group of 1,000 origami cranes (senbazuru in Japanese) are hung in a home they will act as a powerful and benevolent charm and bring good luck.

Senbazuru came to symbolise hope in Japan through the actions of a young girl dying from the effects of the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Sasaki Sadako began a senbazuru – but tragically, was unable to complete her task. However, after her death her classmates completed it in her honour. The creators of 1000 Cranes believe that the senbazuru legend has great significance in a world deeply affected by instability and negativity. As visitors move through the installation, 1,000 hanging origami cranes light up bringing joy and hope to all.

You will find 1000 Cranes inside Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City so why not make the most of your visit and come early to shop, eat and play inside Lakeside Joondalup.
