ICFRC Lecture Luncheon – Tuesday, Oct. 29, 12:00-1:00pm Burns Weston, Professor Emeritus, UI College of Law "Green Governance: Ecological Stewardship through Human Rights and the Commons" The vast majority of the world's scientists agree: We have reached a point in history where we are in grave danger of destroying Earth's life-sustaining capacity. But our attempts to protect natural ecosystems are increasingly ineffective because our very conception of the problem is limited; we treat "the environment" as its own separate realm, taking for granted prevailing but outmoded conceptions of economics, national sovereignty, and international law. Green Governance: Ecological Survival, Human Rights, and the Law of the Commons is a direct response to the mounting calls for a paradigm shift in the way humans relate to the natural environment. It opens the door to a new set of solutions by proposing a compelling new synthesis of environmental protection based on broader notions of economics and human rights and on commons-based governance. Going beyond speculative abstractions, the book proposes a new architecture of environmental law and public policy that is as practical as it is theoretically sound. Burns H. Weston is the Bessie Dutton Murray Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus and Senior Scholar of the Center for Human Rights at The University of Iowa. He is also a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, and a long-time - now honorary - member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law. In recognition of his human rights scholarship and programmatic innovations bridging human rights and the environment, he was awarded the degree of Honorary Doctorate of Law (LL.D.) by Vermont Law School in 2009. Register here, or contact the ICFRC office at (319) 335-0351 or [email protected]. Lectures are 12:00-1:15 pm @ Congregational Church, 30 North Clinton Street. Luncheons are $9.00 for ICFRC members, $12.00 for non-members. We encourage you to bring guests who would enjoy this topic. Spring 2014 Courses Approved for ISBA

06J:146 International Business Environment The increasing complexity and dynamism of the international environment requires that we take an interdisciplinary approach to the study of international management. In this course we will use theories and concepts from organizational behavior, human resource management, sociology, communication studies, and psychology to increase our understanding of both our own and other cultures. We will also use short stories in order to examine these themes in more detail. Similar to case studies that are used in many business courses, these short stories provide a vivid context in which we can explore these theories and concepts and apply them to organizational situations both in the United States and internationally. The class format is very interactive and will include lectures, guest speakers, cases, in-class activities, and group discussion. This course is most appropriate for juniors and seniors with an interest in issues related to international business. Please contact the instructor, Erin Johnson, at [email protected] if you are unable to enroll in the class directly from ISIS. Approved for International Business track.

*** 187:155/152:155 Understanding Health & Disease in Africa: Building Cultural Competency for Working in the Field NOTE: This course was formerly titled Introduction to Africa for the Health Sciences. Students who have completed 187:155 Intro to Africa for Health Sciences may NOT enroll in this course. This course challenges students in the health sciences to consider what they must learn in order to apply their professional skills in unfamiliar societies. Taking Africa as an example, it will lead students to think about how knowledge of culture, economies and history can enhance their ability to apply their skills in African nations. The course will use a wide variety of materials, including not only readings by historians and social sciences, but also videos and fiction by African writers. Among the themes to be covered are i) African environments and their challenges to human health, ii) relations between genders and generations in African societies, iii) the historical experience of Africans in precolonial, colonial and post-colonial periods, and iv) the causes and consequences of economic underdevelopment in Africa. In addition, the course will look at the ways in which Africans combine indigenous and biomedical therapies. It will examine healing institutions and conceptions of illness which are very old in Africa, and also the relatively recent development of biomedical health professions. It will also look at the lives of both traditional healers as well as African physicians and nurses. Assignments will deal with practical problems created by cultural unfamiliarity which health professionals might encounter in Africa. Grading will be based on several short writing assignments and class participation. The course instructor, James Giblin, is the co-director of the African Studies Program. Approved for African Studies, Global Health Studies, Development, and Global Resources & the Environment tracks.

*** 152:183 The Health Experiences of Immigrants, Migrants, and Refugees This interdisciplinary course explores the unique health concerns, challenges, and healthcare experiences of the diverse populations on the move around the world and new to this country. It incorporates documentary materials and guest speakers experienced in responding to the health needs of these interesting individuals; and assignments based on experiences outside the classroom. Issues to be explored include four overlapping sections: 1.) Broad Overview--definitions, populations, and significant health challenges; 2.) Health risks and needs of specific sub-populations; 3.) Patterns of Public and Private Resources and Responses; 4.) Local Picture

(Iowa and Midwest), programs, cases and concerns. Approved for Global Health Studies, Development, Global Resources & the Environment, and Human Rights tracks.

*** 008:179 Literature and Society: Stories of Veterans and Healing To heal is to restore to sound health, to make whole again. Trying to heal the traumas of war, for combat soldiers, and civilians too, can take many forms. Through a variety of storytelling media, this course considers six sources of healing: comrades, family, nature, humor, art, and restorative justice. Stories told through fiction, film, creative nonfiction, and electronic media--stories told across time and territory-- display this valuable array of strategies for healing. We will read and view a number of them from the last 100 years, looking at how the different storytelling arts use their resources to teach us about how healing can occur and to inspire us to embrace healing practices. In addition to English majors, this course is especially suitable for student veterans—whether combat or noncombat veterans--, and students in social work, nursing, or pre-medicine. Others are also welcome. Assignments include several short reading/viewing tests and two papers as well as the expectation that students will add to the syllabus examples they find of healing stories. Optional opportunities for service work in Veterans Hospital or the Coralville Primary Care Clinic can be woven into course assignments. Books will be available at the University Bookstore. For more information, email the instructor at [email protected]. Approved for War, Peace, & Security and Global Artistic Tradition & Change tracks.

IGPI and SLIS Open House

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Informatics (IGPI) and the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) invite you to our Fall 2013 Open House. Adler Journalism and Mass Communication Building - Rotunda Friday, November 8, 2013 2:00 p.m. -- 4:30 p.m. Join us to learn more about two exciting graduate programs that address not only how we produce and manage information but how we can find innovative ways to answer questions and solve the problems facing today's society. INFORMATICS brings information technology together with the arts and humanities, and the natural, biological, health, and social sciences. It deals with the transformation of people by technology, and vice versa, resulting in information that has the capability to solve entirely new problems or successfully attack existing, persistent problems from a different perspective. For more information, visit: http://informatics.grad.uiowa.edu/prospective-students. LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE merges the fields of library science and information science and applies the practices, perspectives and tools of management, information technology, education and other areas to libraries, preservation, archival science, and the political economy of information. Internships with the Cold War International History Project

The Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) at the Woodrow Wilson Center is currently accepting internship applications for the Spring 2014 academic semester. The application deadline is November 15, 2013. The Project supports the full and prompt release of historical materials by governments on all sides of the Cold War, and seeks to accelerate the process of integrating new sources, materials and perspectives from the former "communist bloc" with the historiography of the Cold War which has been written over the past few decades largely by Western scholars reliant on Western archival sources. It also seeks to transcend barriers of language, geography, and regional specialization to create new links among scholars interested in Cold War history. Interns at the Project will assist with research at archives and libraries, editing document manuscripts, publishing, translating, and disseminating CWIHP bulletins and working papers, coordinating scholarly conferences, and answering various information requests. Interns will also assist with digitizing, describing and uploading historical documents to the CWIHP Digital Archive. Interns at CWIHP are at the forefront of the debate and research over the historiography of the Cold War and will gain valuable knowledge from interaction with CWIHP staff, Woodrow Wilson Center Fellows as well as visiting scholars.

Internships at The Adroit Journal In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly Writers House, The Adroit Journal (www.adroit.co.nr), a charitable print/online literary publication, is looking to expand. To facilitate our growth, we are seeking college/university students interested in the journal’s various marketing, communication, humanitarian, layout, and legal responsibilities—in addition to our wealth of poetry and prose staff reading positions. Currently, our staff is comprised of approximately sixty high school and college students from Mauritius to Oklahoma, New York to Singapore, Kentucky to Alberta, and everywhere in-between. We would be delighted to consider Iowa students as additions to our community. For example, we are currently seeking human rights correspondents to orchestrate the annual humanitarian features for inclusion in the journal’s winter issues. Additionally, business-minded students might be interested in our marketing and advertising correspondent positions, and communications students might be interested in the roles of blog editor or social media correspondent. Furthermore, we are looking to find community service liaisons that might be interested in working with our partner charity, the Fill-A-Room Literacy Campaign, to coordinate the distribution of future print copies of our publication free-of-charge to underprivileged institutions and venues within regional hubs of Baltimore, Chicago, Boston, New York City, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. Finally, of course, we are always looking for more staff readers to help our current staff sift through the ever-growing collection of submissions. To check out all the positions offered (or to find more information on those I just listed), please feel free browse through the Employment Catalogue, which contains all of the necessary application and job description information. The application period for these various positions will close on November 13th, 2013. In the meantime, we will begin to evaluate applications on a rolling basis. Interested students may apply for as many positions as they would like and, although prior experience is always appreciated, we are always willing to work with staff members as necessary. This opportunity is open to anyone, anywhere—regardless of academic institution or academic major. Please feel free to contact [email protected] with any questions.

Volunteers Needed at Wright Elementary!

Wright Elementary in Cedar Rapids has seen its student numbers nearly double in two years. Class sizes are averaging 30, and the teachers are looking for help in any capacity. Any time between 9:30-3:00, M-F, they need help with one-on-one or small groups in math, reading, phonics, writers workshop, and even recess time. We have a lot of children who have not had the opportunity to participate in organized sports, games, or just social activities so recess can even be a great chance to make a difference. For more information, please contact Jill Ozarowicz, [email protected], (319) 929-6020.
