~In Our Thoughts & Prayers~ Homebound Parishioner of the Week
This past Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass you may
have noticed that we only offered Holy Communion as the
Body of Christ but not also as His Blood. Someone after
Mass asked me why we didn't have both species (i.e., the
Body and Blood of Christ) and the simple answer was that
we didn't have enough Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion to assist me such that we could offer both spe-
cies. It takes a minimum of 10 people to offer both species
as there are six ministers of the cup and at a minimum four
of us who are ministers of the host. Ideally we would have
thirteen total ministers (twelve plus the priest). We can get
by with 10 as those of us who distribute the hosts can do
both sides of one aisle, but the ministers of the cup cannot.
Thirteen ministers allows us to have two ministers of the
hosts, one on each side of the aisle which makes the pro-
cess more efficient. If we don't have enough ministers then
we only offer one species as that is the best we can do.
What do we have to do to get more ministers? Just have
some of you who are not ministers volunteer to help and let
me train you. The requirements to be an Extraordinary
Minister of Holy Communion are that you have to be at
least 16 years old, have received the Sacraments of Bap-
tism, Confirmation, and Eucharist in the Roman Catholic
Church, be in good standing with the Church, and be
trained for the ministry. I have been training volunteers on
an ad hoc basis as when we planned group trainings in the
past inevitably someone had a conflict and could not make
the training class so I ended up with ad hoc trainings any-
way. I usually train new ministers right after Mass on a
Sunday to save you a trip. It usually takes about 20
minutes to a half hour. If you are interested in helping with
this ministry please just let me know. When we have
enough Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at a
particular Mass we will offer both species. When we don't
we won't.
In a week and a half we begin the season of Lent
and hence our parish Fish Frys. I invite you again to volun-
teer to help with the Fish Frys by contacting Michelle Beisel
at 616-970-0838 to volunteer to help to set up tables and
chairs, prepare the food, cook the food, wait the tables, or
clean up after the dinner is done. Many hands make light
work for all -- and maybe you will meet a new friend or re-
kindle an old friendship by helping.

Parish Family Lent Night
Join us for a short film and fellowship on Thursday, March 7th, from 6:30 - 7:45pm. We will meet in the Church to see the film The Legend of the Three Trees, and then gather in the multi-purpose room down-stairs for family Lenten materials and fel-lowship. The film tells of three trees, each with its own hopes and dreams that do not seem to come true. In unique ways, each interacts with Jesus and learns that God has a special purpose for each of them. All are welcome.
Evening of Worship
Holy Spirit’s next Evening of Worship will be on Saturday, March 9! Please note the time change, as Praise and Worship will begin at 7 pm. So come join us for Mass at 5, dinner at 6 and Praise and Worship at 7, with an op-portunity for reconciliation! Come and be spiritually uplifted through contem-porary song and prayer! Great for the whole family!
Reminder: If you need a copy of your 2018 contribution statement, you can contact the Parish Office and we will get you your copy, either in the mail or we can put it on the table in the Church narthex for you to pick up when you are here for Mass. Jesus challenges us to
act with love.
If you think it’s cold outside, think of how cold it is for
someone who doesn’t have a
house to live in.
