2017ANNUALREPORT2017wasveryaverysuccessfulyearforus.Weachievedanumberofgoals.AtLiveandLearninKenyaEducationCentrewestartedtheyearwith6classes,middleclasstoclass4andbythetimeyearendedwehad8classes.ThatisfromDayCarechildrentoclass5-withaschoolpopulationof240childrenwithamaximumof30pupilsperclass.

Duringtheyearwecarriedoutanumberofprojects;weconstructedamodernkitchenanda7thclassroom.Bothwerereadyforusebytheendoftheyear.OurfeedingprogramwasverymuchalivecourtesyofFEEDASMILEeventsandvarioussponsormealdonations,oftengivenasbirthdaypresentstotheirsponsoredchildren.Ourchildrenreceivedwarmandnutritiousmealsthroughouttheyear.

Ourprogramchildrenwhoareinvocationaltraining,collegesanduniversitystayedinschooluninterruptedbylackofschoolfeesandotherlearningrequirements,whichwerepaidintimetomakethatpossible.

Parentswhohavereceivedfundsformicro-creditbusinesseswereveryhappybecausetheywereabletoputfoodontheirtables.Wehelpedthemtohelpthemselves.Wethankourdonorsforsupportingthesefamilies.Theyhelpedtheirsponsoredchildrentostayhealthyandatthesametimestayinschool.

Ourschoolparticipatedinamusiccompetitionforthefirsttimethisyear.TheydidverywellandreachedtheRegionalLevelinEldoret.Wehopetodoevenbetterin2018.

InOctober2017oursponsorsfromtheUSA,GermanyandtheNetherlandsvisitedourproject.Theycametoassesstheprogressofourprojectandofficiallyopenournewkitchenandaclassroom.Everyonewashappyandimpressedwithoutwork.

Asalways,bothparentsandchildrenreceivedChristmaspresentson22nd,DecemberjustbeforeweclosedforChristmas.Theywereveryhappyandgratefultosponsorsanddonors.

Wehadanumberofchildrenwhosatforclass8andform4nationalexams.Anumberofthempassedverywellandareabletojoinhighschoolanduniversity.

Ingeneral,weachievedallofoursetgoalsoftheyear.

Belowaresomeoftheactivitieswecarriedoutintheyear2017

a) ADMISSIONofNEWCHILDRENThisyearweenrolled60newchildren.Weadmittedchildrentokindergartenclassanddaycare.Thegovernmenthaschangedthesystemofeducationfrom3-8-4-4to2-6-3-3-3.Intheoldsystem,childrenhad3yearsinnursery/kindergarten,8yearsinprimary,4yearsinhighschooland4yearsofuniversity.Thenewsystemwillhave2yearsinnursery/kindergarten,6yearsinprimary,3yearsinlowersecondaryand3yearsinuppersecondary/highschooland3yearsatuniversity.Thenewsystemnolongertakestheveryyoungchildrenintoconsideration.Insteaditacceptsdaycareforchildrenaged3years.Wehaveadmitted30childrenintoournewdaycare.Thismakesatotalnumberofchildrenatourschool240.

Wehaveaschoolfeedingprogramforourpublicschoolchildrenandourownschool(LiveandLearninKenyaEducationCentre).Wepayforlunchesforourchildreninintheirrespectivepublicschoolsonatermbasis.Apartfromkeepingourchildrenhealthy,thefeedingprogramalsokeepstheminschool.Ourfeedingprogramhasalsohelpedchildrentoimproveintheirstudiesastheyarealwaysatschooltobeabletohaveawarmmealeveryday–andtheyareabletoconcentrateontheirschoolworkwithoutabeinghungry.Itisalsoarelieftotheirparents,astheydon’thavetoworryaboutbeingabletoprovideamealfortheirchildren.

AtourcenterwehaveourfeedingprogramfromMondaythroughSaturday.Childrenhavebreakfastat10amandawarmandnutritiousmealatlunchtime.

c)SCHOOLUNIFORM

Intheyear2013,weinitiatedatailoringworkshopatourschool.Youthswhohadfinishedvocationaltrainingcometovolunteer.Theymakeschooluniformsforourschoolgoingchildren-fromnurserytohighschool.Thisyear,allstudentsreceivedschooluniformcompletewithshoesandsocksbeforeschoolsopenedon2ndJanuary.

PupilswhoattendLiveandLearninKenyaSchoolalsoreceivedAfricanattire.TheyputonthisattireeveryFriday.ThisisourspecialdayforAfricanculture.Weencourageourchildrentoknowtheirrootsandculture.Weinitiatedthisactivity3yearsago.

Intheprocessofmakingschooluniformsandotherclothes,theseyouthsearnaprofit.Theyhavemanagedtousethisprofittobuy200plasticchairsand2tentswithacapacityof100peopleeach.Thissavesusthecostsofrentingtentsandchairswheneverwehavevisitorsorlargerevents/activities.

i) SchoolKitchen/Septicandpitlatrines

ThekitchenwebeganconstructinginJanuary2017wascompletedinOctober.Itisastandardkitchen,whichiswhyittookusalongtimetobuildandwasquitecostly.Itisfittedwithenergysavingstoves,steamhood,oven,changingroomsandrestroomsforbothmenandwomen.ItwasofficiallyopenedwhenoursponsorscameinlateOctober.

A10,000literwatertankwasfittedtothiskitchenforrainwaterharvesting.ThistankwasdonatedbyRenateandKayAngermann.Theyaresponsorsarealsosponsoring2projectchildren.Weallappreciatethisdonation.

ii)Class5Construction

Therewasneedtohaveaclassroomforthe5thin2018.Wewereluckytofindadonorwhopaidfortheconstructionofthisclassroom.ThisclassroomwasdonatedbytheGermanfamily-Tanja,KlausandLoredanaGrünlingandthefirmAndresGmbHwithGerhardandBrigitteSüß.ConstructionbeganinJanuaryandbytheendofMarch,itwasreadyforuse.

E)VOCATIONALTRAINING

Pupilswhodon’tqualifyforhighschoolaregiventheopportunitytoattendthevocationaltraininginstitutionoftheirchoiceinNakuru.Varioustradesareopentothem.Mostofthemchoosemechanics,tailoringandhairdressing.Aftertraining,theyareexpectedtovolunteeratourschool,especiallythoseintailoringschools.Theyhelpinmakingschooluniformsforourprojectchildren.

Wevisitthemattheirinstitutionsonaregularbasistomonitortheirprogressasshowninthephotosbelow.

AvisitfromMichael Rothwell from GlobalGivingGlobalGivingisaUSbasedcharityorganizationwhichfundsprojectsthroughouttheworld.ThroughGlobalGivingwehavereceivedseveralthousandEurosthroughregulardonationsandsponsorshipfundswhichgothroughthem.Thesefundshavehelpedinschoolconstructionandotherprojectrequirements–andaretaxdeductibleintheUSAandGreatBritain.

Recommendation for how to better use GlobalGiving Overall your project pages on GlobalGiving are very good - your photos are engaging and the project descriptions are excellent. However, I think you can improve your project reports by switching their focus to telling the compelling stories of the students you've helped in your school. By focusing on telling an individual's story you will be able to demonstrate the impact of your work to your donors - stories about the beneficiaries' personal transformations has been shown to be a lot more effective than general updates on the organization as a whole. Feedback on your programs It might be worthwhile pursuing some other means of income generation alongside the tailoring workshop you currently have on site e.g. keeping livestock or a small farm etc. Likewise you could have a look at applying for some funding from other organizations such as 'The School Fund' or 'Level Up Village'.

PlantingofcropsforFeedingprogramEveryyearweplantcropsforourfeedingprogram.Weplantmaize,beansandvegetables.Thisreducesthecostofbuyingfoodfromthemarket.

Thisyearfarmcropsdidnotdowell.Thiswasduetoshortageofrainfall.Nakuruhadbeendrymostpartoftheyear.The2017harvestwasverypoor.

H)MUSICFESTIVAL

Ourschoolparticipatedinmusicfestivalthisyearforthefirsttime.Theyhadanumberofpresentations-fromsongstopoems.TheyperformedverywellandreachedtheRegionalLevel,whichwasheldinEldoret.Thiswasagreatsuccessforbothteachersandpupils.WehopetheywillreachNationalinthe2018festival.

I)MEDICATION

Medicationisoneofourprojectobjectives.Wetakecareofmedicationofallourprojectchildren.WehaveacontractwiththeKimsawHospital,whichisa24-hourhospitalwherewetakeourchildrenwhenevertheyfallill.

WealsohaveacontractwithOpticalhospitalforeyecheckupsandtreatmentswithaHi-TechOptician.Theybothtreatourchildrenandwepaythemattheendofthemonth.Doctors,opticiansandpublichealthalsoprovideroutinechildrencheckupsatnocost.

Hygieneworkshop

TherewasacholeraoutbreakinNakuruandNairobiinJuly.Weinvitedapublichealthofficertocomeandgiveaworkshopforbothchildrenandteachers.Theyweretaughtpersonalandenvironmentalhygiene.Aftertheworkshopallchildrenwerede-wormed.

J)MICRO-CREDIT

InearlyAugust,wevisitedallparents’micro-creditbusinesses.Currentlywehave32parentswithamicro-creditbusiness.

Mostoftheseparentsreceivedfundsfromtheirchildren’ssponsors.Sponsorsdecidedtohelpthesefamiliestohelpthemselves.Anumberofparentsinbusinessarealsofosterparentsforwhomwereceivedfundstoinitiatethemicro-credit,fromElsbethHirsche.Shedonated400,000KenyaShillingsfromherretirementbenefitstomotivatefosterparents.Theseparentshavetakeninorphansfromourprogram.Theirbusinessessupportboththeirfosterchildrenaswellastheirown.

Mostofthebusinesseswevisitedaredoingwell.Mostparents/guardiansareabletopayhouserentandbuyfoodthroughthisincome.

Whilehere,theyparticipatedinanumberofactivities;singingandplayingwithchildren,constructionofaplayground,familyvisits,takingchildrentoNakuruNationalparkamongothers.

a) ConstructionofPlaygroundConstructionoftheplaygroundstartedtwodaysaftervisitor’sarrival.Allconstructionmaterialwasboughtbyoneoftheguests(KayAngermann).Hespentmorethan1,000€onmaterialandsomeskilledlabor.Visitorswerejoinedbymaleparentsandyouthstodothework,whichtook4daystocomplete.

Itisduringthisfunctionthatwealsoofficiallycommissionedourschoolkitchenandclassroom.Childrenwhowillbejoiningfirstgradein2018alsograduatedfrompreschool.Ourparentswereveryappreciative.Theydoitinasmallbuttraditionalway.Theybuysmallpresentsforoursponsorstoappreciatetheirvisitandthehelptheygivetotheirchildren.Thefabuloussinginganddancingfortheirvisitorstellsitall.

RobinsonwasstudyingBachelorofScienceinElectricalEngineeringatMombasaTechnicalUniversitywhileHolinesswasdoingherBachelorofCommerceatTechnicalUniversityofKenya.Weareexpectingothertwostudentstograduatein2018.Wethankallsponsorsanddonorswhoaremakingallthispossible.Theseyoungpeoplemayhaveendeduponthestreets–orworsewithoutyou.

IthasbecomeanLLKtraditiontogiveChristmaspresentstobothourchildrenandtheirparents.Thisgivesthemthepossibilitytofeellikeotherpeopleinthesociety.ItisgoodforthemtoenjoyatraditionalChristmas,too.
