LIVING UP TO THE SPIRIT OF LAUDATO SI!
Presentation to ENVICON 2015 2
“Laudato Si” – a Timely call• It is just appropriate that the Pope has elevated concerns about
ecological balance into the level of being part of the social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church even if – 1) not all of us are Catholic and – 2) not all Catholics are 100% obedient to the Pope.
• The call for DIALOGUE is critical since we have seen how some sectors quickly “demonize” others effectively shutting them out of the conversation.
• The mineral development industry has always been conscious of its responsibility to our natural environment and is happy to contribute to the dialogue.
• Personally, beyond Laudato Si there are other issues we have to face squarely.

REALITY: THE MINING FOOTPRINT IN PALAWAN IS VERY SMALL
Berong Nickel(Quezon)
Citinickel(Narra and Espanola)
Coral Bay Nickel Plant(Bataraza)
Rio Tuba Nickel(Bataraza)
• Of Palawan’s total area of 1.46 M hectares, only 1,557 hectares are covered by mining permits – or only over 0.1% of the province!
• Also, Palawan’s large scale mines are in the south – away from the tourist areas - El Nido, SPURiver - in the center or north!
