Message from Idaho Orff-Schulwerk Association President TERESA COLEBROOK Hello and welcome to a new and exciting MUSICAL school year! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing, restful summer! This year's October's Mini-Conference has a Local Theme "Live, Love, Laugh, Learn" at our Local Idaho Orff-Schulwerk Mini-Conference. One of our goals in planning this conference is to offer sessions presented by our "local treasures." There are so many talented and creative presenters right here in the valley. Take a look at the conference schedule and sign up for sessions you are interested in. Sessions fill up quickly so make sure to sign up early and list an alternate workshop, just in case your session is full. In addition, there will be musical performances from local groups during some of our breaks and lunchtime. Check them out! Also, remember that the conference location has changed in order to accommodate such a huge event. We will be at Sage Valley Middle School (Vallivue District) in Nampa. Idaho Orff-Schulwerk provides music educators the opportunity to earn two (2) professional development credits per year that apply to your teaching credentials. At the same time, you will glean new ideas and resources that will ignite your teaching and spark the interests of your students! Be certain to renew your local membership so we can continue to offer these outstanding workshops here in Idaho. I would like to thank the board members for all of their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our Idaho Orff Chapter. Many hours were spent planning and organizing the fall conference which offers a variety of sessions, clinicians, and vendors. A special thank you to Andy Goodman and Bev Schumacher for designing the schedules. We are always working to improve the workshops, so I encourage everyone to give us their suggestions and input. Also, a special thank you to the Vallivue School District for their continuous support in providing meeting venues for our workshops. Over the summer we had a few changes to the board. Our President-Elect, Lisa Allen, moved to San Francisco to be closer to her family and pursue new musical endeavors. We will miss Lisa. She was SO creative and gifted! Therefore, I have skipped over President-Elect and have moved into the President position where I will serve for the next two years. That means that we now have the position of President-Elect open and we will be nominating/voting at our membership meeting on Thursday, October 2nd during lunchtime. If you have ever wanted to serve on the board, now is your chance!! There are some nice benefits to being on the board. If you are interested in the position, please contact me. We are also very pleased with the Orff Level One class which was offered in July at BSU. Both Dr. Andy Goodman and Dr. Lori Conlon Khan taught levels courses at the rigorous two-week session. If you see them at the fall conference, please take a moment to thank them. Paul Weller was also there to teach pedagogy (you may remember his fabulous workshop during our February 2014 conference). I'm proud to say that because of our active membership (that's YOU), our Idaho Orff Chapter was able to provide scholarships to several of our members so they could complete their Level One training! Please consider donating to the cause for next year by giving a dollar or two at the registration table toward the quilt that we will be auctioning. We are hoping to raise enough money to offer more scholarships for next year's Levels training. Thank you for registering early for the mini-conference! As you continue to grow in your teaching profession, remember to add these upcoming professional development events to your calendar: -November 5-8, 2014 is the AOSA national conference in Nashville, TN. More information is available at www.aosa.org. -Saturday January 24th, 2015, we will have our Chapter Share and "Make and Take" workshop. -Saturday February 21st, 2015, David Boggs will be coming! AND -Keep checking our Idaho Orff website for more upcoming information at www.idahoorff.org and LIKE us on Facebook: Friends of Idaho Orff Best wishes for a fabulous school year and we'll see you at the conference! Common Core Standards and the Music Curriculum

Common Core Standards (CCS) are here. The CCSS arts  standards  haven’t  changed  significantly.    This  session explores the effect on the music classroom, primarily (though not exclusively) in elementary

general music. Examples from the music classroom that meet the intent of the CCS in grades K-6 will be

provided. The good news is much of what we do in our classrooms today meets the overarching

expectations of critical analysis, high-quality literature, thoughtful engagement, and integration

throughout the curriculum – foundational aspects of CCS. Potential ways to achieve these outcomes

will be demonstrated. Time will be reserved for questions and discussion.

Lori Conlon Khan

Lori Conlon Khan earned her master’s degree in Integrating the Arts from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with a correlate area of Music Education from Boise State. She is an adjunct faculty member at Lesley and BSU, as well as a full-time General Music Specialist for the Boise School District. Lori has completed all levels of Orff teacher training and two master classes. A member of Idaho Orff for 30 years, she currently serves AOSA as Region I Representative. She has presented Orff-Schulwerk workshops throughout the state.

Kim Porter

Kim first discovered West African drumming via a djembe class she took from Rick Thompson at Drum Central in 2009. The complexity of the rhythms and the spirit they evoked immediately drew her in and prompted a sought after journey in personal growth. Since then, her focus has been more heavily weighted in West African dance, concentrated primarily in the music and dance of Guinea. Kim studies extensively in the US as well as making trips to Guinea for immersed training. Her primary teachers are Manimou Camara, Yousouff Koumbassa, Alhassane Bangoura, Kadija Camara, Bebe Bangoura, and Ousmane Zito Bangoura. Kim has experienced a great deal of fulfillment in teaching dance to adults and children and working on community projects to create greater cultural diversity in Boise. She has also created health care and education projects raising funds in Boise to give back to communities in Guinea. She is particularly inspired by a common Guinean expression supportively shouted at her during  her  studies  in  Guinea,  “Du  courage!”  or  "Have  Courage!"

Heather Steele

Prior to discovering Zimbabwean marimba, Heather enjoyed singing in just about any setting and dabbling in various instruments, music history, theory, and jazz theory/arranging. She also spent a 3-year stint teaching Music Together ®, a program for babies and toddlers with their caregivers. She first got the chance to play with a marimba band in 2006 and was instantly hooked. In 2008, frustrated with the lack of teachers and players in our area, she acquired a set of marimbas and began teaching in her garage studio. Seeking opportunities to get the music out in the public, she pursued collaborations with elementary school and community-based choirs. In addition to her regular classes, she has taught several  sessions  of  ANSER  Charter  School’s  Community-Based Curriculum program, and has arranged and taught marimba accompaniments to songs performed by the Boise Intergenerational Choir nearly since its inception. Her groups now perform fairly regularly at many venues around Boise. You can read more about what Heather does at http://www.marimbaboise.com.

Dr. Mary McGuire

Mary has taught as adjunct professor at several colleges and universities in the Treasure Valley including College of Idaho and Boise State. She has presented at state and regional workshops, and spent a summer teaching English in China. McGuire has been singing and performing since her youth. Currently, she is a Reading Specialist at Horizon Elementary School in the Boise School District.

Dr. Bethanie Hansen

Dr. Bethanie L. Hansen lives in Boise, Idaho, with her husband (a public school educator) and their two sons. Bethanie has taught public school music for 18 years, in grades K-12 in Utah, Idaho, and California, and presently teaches bands at Amity Elementary in Boise. She also currently serves as the Faculty Director for the School of Education at American Public University/American Military University. She has presented teacher workshops and music education research both in the United States and in Brazil. She currently serves as the Northwest Division Chair of the Children with Exceptionalities Special Research Interest Group within NAfME, is an active member of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and its Music in Special Education, Music Therapy and Music Medicine Commission, and serves as the secretary for Idaho Orff.

Dee Uyeki
